Harold Pinter (1930-2008)

Faleceu anteontem o dramaturgo inglês Harold Pinter, vítima de cancro prolongado. Escreveu 29 peças, de que se destacam «The room», «The birthday party», «The dumb waiter», «The caretaker», «The collection» e «The lover». Foi também actor e guionista (assinou o argumento dos filmes «The servant» e «A amante do tenente francês»). Pela mão dos Artistas Unidos, tive o prazer de conhecer o seu teatro, num ciclo que lhe dedicaram há uns anos atrás, em Lisboa. Os AU traduziram ainda alguns dos seus textos (vd. aqui). Foi um intelectual comprometido com as causas da esquerda. Aproveitou o discurso do Nobel da Literatura 2005 para fazer um dos mais assertivos libelos anti-guerra, fustingando os principais fautores da guerra do Iraque, Bush & Blair. Desde que ganhara o Nobel, decidiu centrar-se na poesia, tendo escrito sobre a sua própria doença, como vallera já aqui referira.

Joseph Losey & The Servant

Speaking about The Servant, Losey declared: ‘For me the film is only a film about servility, servility of the master, servility of the servant and servility in the attitude of all sorts of people in different classes and positions […] It is a society of fear, and the reaction in the face of fear is in the majority of cases not resistance and combat, but servility, and servility is a state of mind’ (Prèsence du Cinèma, no. 20, March 1964)
