[230] ἐν δοιῆι, we are in doubt whether we shall save our ships, or whether they are lost. For the constr. compare 10.173, 15.502. σαωσέμεν, a mixed aor., not a fut. The words mean the saving of the ships or their loss, “νῆας” being first object, then subject. Compare Od. 2.226 for a similar change. As Monro well remarks (H. G. § 231), the use of the infin. as an abstract noun, with no distinct reference to an agent, makes the harshness more apparent than real; there is no need for Bekker's ingenious conj. “σόας” (rather “σάας”) “ἔμεν”, founded on 1.117, 8.246. δοιή, here only, from duo ‘two’ for “δϝο-ιή”: cf. “δυ-βιυς”, Zweifel, etc.
