[666] All the variants given above lead back to an original “ΤΡΟΠΑΣΘε” = “τροπᾶσθε” for “τροπάεσθε” (-“αι” for -“ε” being only itacistic). “τρωπᾶν” (though given without MS. variation in 9.500, 11.568, 18.585) is a mere figment, though an old one, dating from the period which produced the ‘Epic diectasis’; we can always restore “τροπάειν”. So “τρωχᾶν” for “τροχάειν” (22.163, Od. 6.318 “τρεχέτην”) and “στρωφᾶν” for “στροφάειν” (except 13.557, see note). Cf. Menrad Contr. p. 126, H. G. § 55. 9.
