Cf. 6.118, where “πυμάτη” means the same thing proceeding from the centre outwards, instead of as here from the circumference inwards. χαλκός here must mean the metal facing, like “χρυσός” above. This, like the hide, is made thinner at the edge, which is of less importance than the centre for defensive purposes.
