[65] ἦλθε δ᾽ ἐπὶ ψυχ́η, a phrase occurring four times in the Odyssean “νέκυια” (Od. 11.84, 90, 387, 467). The “ἐπί” is more significant there, as the phrase is not used of the first ghost, but only of those which succeed, closely following upon one another. But “ἐπελθεῖν” is often used like our come upon, of unexpected approach (e.g. 10.40, 15.84, 23.91, 24.651), which is evidently expressed here. See also note on “ἐπιφαίνεσθαι” 17.650.
