[375] Here, as elsewhere, there is difficulty in translating ἄφαρ straightway (see note on 11.418), for there is no definite point of time for it to refer to; at best we must suppose that “πύματον δρόμον” implies the turn, and that “ἄφαρ” means ‘directly they had turned.’ It seems better to recognize once more a vaguely intensifying sense, ‘the pace was forced indeed. ’ For τάθη δρόμος in this sense see 758.
