[273] It is doubtful if we should read κατ᾽ αὐτόθι as one word or as two. The preposition in tmesis rarely stands after its verb (see, however, 2.699), and here the rhythm throws it forward. In 21.201, Od. 21.90 “κατ᾽ αὐτόθι λεῖπεν, λιπόντε”, where the verb follows, it seems most natural to take it with “κατά”. The same question arises with “κατ᾽ αὖθι,” 13.653, 17.535, 24.470; for “παραυτόθι” or “παρ᾽ αὐτόφι” see on 12.302.
