[99] The θώρηκος γύαλον causes difficulty. There is no doubt that it means the (front) plate of the cuirass; but later on (112-3, 795-9) it seems clear that Diomedes is not wearing a cuirass at all. It seems necessary to suppose that 99-100 were interpolated at a time when it was a matter of course that the hoplite wore a “θώρηξ”, and the mention of it therefore seemed indispensable. See App.
