[686] Lines 686-94, athetized by Zen., are evidently added to adapt to present circumstances a passage originally describing the mustering of the whole host. So also 699-709, 721-28. ἐυνώοντο, i.e. “ἐμνάοντο” = “μιμνήσκοντο”. The only other form from this pres. stem, in the sense remember, is “μνωόμενος,” Od. 4.106, Od. 15.400; elsewhere “μνάεσθαι” means to woo a wife. δυσηχέος, from “ἄχος, κακὰ ἄχη περιποιῶν”, the vowel being lengthened, as so often in compounds, at the point of juncture. Cf. “δυσηλεγής” from “ἄλγος”. The alternative der. from (“ϝ”）“ηχή”, as if horrisonus, takes no account of the “ϝ”; and even if we wrote “πολεμου δυσϝηχέος” with van L. the epithet would not suit “θάνατος” (16.442, etc.).
