[55] It may be noticed that “ὁπλίζεσθαι” in Homer means to prepare in a general way, cf. 7.417, etc. The use of the verb as identical with “θωρήσσεσθαι” seems to be a later specialization; besides the present passage it occurs in Homer only in Od. 24.495, the latest part of all the poems. So the use of “ὅπλα” to mean armour occurs only in 10.254, 272, 18.614, 19.21.
