[407] εἶς (which should rather be “ἔσσ᾽”) is an intolerably weak word for so emphatic a place. In 16.515 it is not followed by a pause, which makes all the difference. L. Lange conj. “εἰ δ᾽”, cf. Od. 4.831-32 “εἰ μὲν δὴ θεός ἐσσι . . εἰ δ᾽ ἄγε μοι κατάλεξον”. But the verb can hardly be omitted altogether, nor can it be introduced into 406. ἀληθείην κατάλεξον is Odyssean (six times).
