[339] Μηκιστ̂η: the only other contracted acc. from a noun in -“εύς” is the doubtful “Τυδῆ” 4.384. Hence Brandreth conj. “Μηκιστῆα δὲ Πουλυδάμας”. But perhaps we should adopt the variant “Μηκιστήν” (or -“ῆν”): compare “Ἀντιφάτην” 12.191 but “Ἀντιφατῆα” Od. 10.114 (Menrad) Mekisteus is son of Echios in 8.333, so perhaps it is meant that father and son are killed together (cf. 14.514). But these lists of the unimportant slain are to be regarded as only extemporized; so that names which have occurred together in other passages are very likely to be brought into contact again in fresh relations, without thought of any special significance.
