[198] δήμου ἄνδρα: the “τ᾽” is probably inserted only to avoid the hiatus, which is rare in this place. We should rather read “δήμοι᾽” (and so in 23.431, 24.578). For the elision of “ο” of the term. “-οιο” see note on 11.35. If τε be retained, we must with Bekker, H. B. ii. 165, explain ‘every one whom he both saw to be of the common sort and found shouting,’ which is not very satisfactory.
