Jun 13 - Celebrate Miyamoto Musashi

  Posted on June 13, 2022

This is an update of my post published on June 13, 2011:

A Japanese swordsman extraordinaire... a samurai and author... Musashi is renowned for his excellent swordsmanship and numerous duels. He started fighting with swords—and winning—when he was still quite young, and he created and perfected a two-sword technique—using a large sword and a “companion sword” at the same time.

He was born around 1584 and died on this day in 1645.

Musashi is famous for his book Go Rin No Sho, in which he teaches the “way of the strategist.” He urged people to, not only learn strategy, but also earn virtue by learning the ways of life and various skills and areas knowledge from many different professions.

He seemed to think that one could not gain strategy by confining oneself to just one particular style of sword fighting, for example. He wrote, “I practice many arts and abilities – all things with no teacher.”

Here are some more quotes from Musashi:

  • Do nothing which is of no use.”
  • You win battles by knowing the enemy's timing, and using a timing which the enemy does not expect.”
  • Aspire to be like Mt. Fuji, with such a broad and solid foundation that the strongest earthquake cannot move you, and so tall that the greatest enterprises of common men seem insignificant from your lofty perspective. With your mind as high as Mt Fuji you can see all things clearly. And you can see all the forces that shape events; not just the things happening near to you.”

Nowadays...

People still practice Japanese swordsmanship in martial arts classes and competitions. Check out this video and this other video.

May 4 - Greenery Day – Japan

    Posted on May 4, 2022

This is an update of my post published on May 4, 2011:

Today is near the end of Japan's Golden Week, a string of holidays that includes Showa Day (April 29), Constitution Memorial Day (May 3), and Children's Day (a.k.a. Boy's Day, May 5).

This is a day to commune with nature and to be thankful for its blessings. Even though nature sometimes dishes out huge disasters (like the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Sendai and nearby areas of Japan!), there are plenty of things for which we all, including the Japanese people, can feel grateful.

We could all use a Greenery Day to remind us to think of the environment. How about a visit to your local arboretum or botanical garden, a hike in the woods, or a work session in a garden. Don't have a garden? Start one! Or use Google to find a community garden you can work in on a regular basis.

This is an update of my post published on March 14, 2011:

In Japan, Valentine's Day (February 14) is a day when women give chocolates to men. Today is the day that men “reply” to women, giving them gifts such as white chocolate, white clothing, cookies or jewelry or even marshmallows!

Quick Quiz

How many white foods can you name?

How about white animals?

See some suggested answers below...

A white landscape looks wintry and cold.
