Happy
birthday to The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show!
The
adventures of a moose and a flying squirrel shouldn't be THIS funny!
This animated series also includes some bad guys (Russian-esque spies
Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale, plus Snidely Whiplash of “Curses!
Foiled again!” fame), a rather feeble-minded Canadian Mountie named
Dudley Do-Right, a dog and his pet boy, and everyone's favorite:
Fractured Fairy Tales!
On
this date in 1959, Rocky & His Friends debuted; the show
lasted almost five years. It's one of the few TV shows I remember
from my early childhood!
There
have been film adaptations (which were mostly terrible), music
recordings, toys, and video games. Of course, Rocky and Bullwinkle
episodes are available in reruns, on YouTube, and on DVDs; Rocky and
Bullwinkle have appeared in ads, on U.S. postage stamps, in a
newspaper comic strip, and in a children's opera.
One
of the things I like about the humor of Rocky and Bullwinkle is that
it sometimes gets self-referential. Here are two examples:
Rocky:
Bullwinkle, I'm worried.
Bullwinkle:
Ratings down in the show again?
Rocky:
No.
Bullwinkle:
That's odd.
Rocky:
I'm worried because there have already been two attempts on your
life.
Bullwinkle:
Oh, don't worry. We will be renewed.
Rocky:
I'm not talking about the Bullwinkle Show.
Bullwinkle:
You had better; we could use the publicity.
AND:
Rocky:
Bullwinkle, do you know what an A-Bomb is?
Bullwinkle:
Sure, a bomb is what some people call our show.
Rocky:
I don't think that's very funny.
Bullwinkle:
Neither do they, apparently.
Celebrate!
