A New Blog of Note: GB&B Covers More Than Just 40k!

Well guys, for those of you who wondered where the winds of the Internet would blow the former authors of Dark Future Games, let me turn you onto a new blog headed by Lord Solar Steve and Dreadbeard (formerly known as Samsquantch Monster). Don't take it from me though, here is the info directly from Lord Solar Steve:

The 40k Friendly at Adepticon: List Ideas

This year, instead of trying to scramble together a team for the Team Tournament at Adepticon, SAMSQUANCH MONSTER and I have decided to both enter the 40k Friendly!

With this comes a different set of challenges, first and foremost, with the advent of 6th edition, I actually have to build my Vendettas (what they have only been new in box for a year and a half...) and some other nice things to round out the 1500 points of my list. That's right... instead of the 1850 we have been playing at we have to scale back down to 1500... In fact with how 6th edition is, its not just a scale back to me. It is a whole rethinking of the list.

With this in mind I thought I would start testing a list that I came up with earlier this week. I don't mind feedback on it from my fellows on the net so here we go!

Do your other hobbies influence your mini's hobby?

Most people in the world of miniatures have more than one hobby, whether it be two or three mini games themselves, or perhaps a board game obsession or perhaps even into RPGs. No matter what, one hobby will influence your others, sometimes for good, sometimes for bad.

Your Questions and Topics, The Lord Solar Answers... (part 2)

The topic that I was asked to talk about for this installment was by ServvsUmbrarum who also has a blog, The Initiate, (though he has not posted in awhile, hopefully this will encourage him to!) He asked:
"I've got about 2k worth of guard and I was wondering if you could cover an odd topic but something I've been struggling with.
How can one build an army list that is both fun to play with and against. One of my biggest issues with the way I play guard is that I just sit back and shoot. I love my other codex's because I'm constantly moving, weighing options but my current Guard list is just so...sit there and shoot, target priority being the only real skill I have to use.
So I guess the topic I'd like to see is. "How to make a dynamic guard list that works with the unique nature and strengths of the codex without parking lot.
I hope this makes sense. I never like to make my opponent feel disengaged from the battle and am a strong believer in the 'social contract'."

Your Questions, The Lord Solar Answers (All About Allies)

O.K. so with the last post I did, a few questions/topic requests were tossed to me by some faithful readers. So I figured I would take the time to answer the first today like I said I would!

First question was from Grazer who also writes for a couple blogs, Rogue Trader and Claws and Fists so check him out (and perhaps he will join the blog roll legion for DFG after this). His question was as follows
"I'd be interested in what you think are the best options for Allies for IG, and whether you even think they are necessary at all.
I have used Blood Angels infantry to try and strengthen my midfield and to fight for objectives, but they are quite expensive and obviously limit the amount of artillery  tanks and flyers you can select from the IG codex."

Imperial Guard in 6th Edition, a new series

Hello once again ladies and gents, up here in grand ol' Michigan we have started diving in more and more into the world that is 6th edition. The more we dig in, the more I at least realize things have changed. I do not mean that the entire thing has been turned upside down, but some units have becomes far more viable, and some less so.

Walkers, Tanks and Transports... still worth it?

Last night I played another game of 6th, and once again, found myself REALLY enjoying it.  The new scenarios, the warlord traits, everything! The other neat thing about this game was I went back in time a little bit with my list making.

You all know I have been touting the foot guard list with a TON of heavy weapons teams filled with copious amounts of lascannons. Those lists are great, and powerful and definitely get the job done! (Getting me tied for 3rd in a tourney not so long ago in which I made a few REALLY bad play mistakes against one of my most dreaded foes Daemons!)

Alright already... lets talk about what went right..

There has been a lot of crying, a lot of calling out issues and a lot of questions with 6th Edition, yet perhaps it is time to take a step back, with the acknowledgement that some things need clarity, and take a moment to praise some of the -GREAT- things we have gotten with the new rule set. (and i don't mean just things that benefit my army)

First off and primary to my enjoyment of the game overall is the new and improved missions. I am loving every bit of it, It got quite tiring to play the same three setup/mission combos over and over again at the FLGS and then once again at a local tournament.  (I know that some tournaments used other things, but still...) Which more than anything has resulted in the less importance on kill points than before (yay!)

The chances of you playing two games that are nearly the same setup, with the same mission and objectives is extremely rare now with the advent of mysterious terrain and objectives which add a thread of variety to each and every game (and yes I am of the opinion that those rules are not optional, they are not presented as such in the rule book, so why do we think that they can be?) To em this variety and excitement of never quite knowing what things are going to be like make the player have to anticipate far more than you used to, making the game far more thematic as well as thought provoking.  So if you find your games getting a bit stagnant  make sure you -USE- these rules, from the terrain and archeotech things to the mysterious objectives.

What do you guys think is the greatest thing about the new edition? Do you think it is the new way terrain works? The new missions? Or perhaps it is the allies chart or the something else?

Once again, if you readers have anything you would like me to cover in a post (I recommend Imperial Guard questions but hell I will give any subject a shot as long as it pertains to 40k) shoot me an email at imasentinel@gmail.com

Imperial Guard: Thoughts of life in 6th so far.

Well, we all have had time to look and read over parts of 6th, and I will give you a few opinions on what I think so far on how it has affected the Imperial Guard.

"Rise of the Lascannon" Round 2..... FIGHT!: Battle Report

As you all know I recently started a new list that is really different. The reasons why and what the list is can be found here. Now I have played my second game with this list, and against Grey Knights at that against DFG's very own... The Judge.

Lascannons arise! The Rebirth of my foot-guard, and the death of Chimera spam

So a couple weeks ago I had decided to try out a new list (for a reminder on the list, or if you didn't read it the first time, here is a link to the article.) This list... its gone to the cleaners... and will never return. After three games I have thrown in the towel. I know, I know, I promised to give it 10 full games, but 3 was all it took to realize that the list just was not going to work.

Week 5 of painting challenge: A little guard, a lot of dark eldar

Hello everyone, its me L.S.S., taking over for Sammy while he is out on the road for his business. This week we have two more entries from our faithful followers... well one entry and a bunch from a second guy. My own kill point for this week is delayed for now, but should be up by Friday.

First we have Brian with more of his wonderful guard, he called them "Another speed-paint job: A Platoon Command Squad." though they look pretty darn good for a speed-job.

Next we have a HUGE amount of pictures from Ed, I will let him speak for himself about this:

Winding up for 6th or winding down from 5th, which are you?

As we wind our way down from 5th edition, and the rumors of 6th edition coming out as early as next month, our FLGS has seen some interesting attitudes towards the news. We have seen both excitement and begrudging of both the new and the old, but no matter what we have to look forward.

Imperial Guard: Static shock no more

Let's be honest with one another, sometimes, your winning list is boring as hell. Take mine for example, it wins... a lot. I mean, it does not win every game, and some games really make me struggle, but in most single game match ups it wins. Unfortunately for my opponents it is usually not a fun game, or so I have been told, because I play a very static Imperial Guard gun-line. I do not move much at all... ever. Lets check out what is normally my list just to get an idea.

Death Star Update.... no more orks...

So with great sadness I have to report my orks will not be making their appearance in the team tournament as planned. Unfortunately I had to move for a new job and both things combined meant that I was not getting things done in time.

Fear not however, for there still shall be an appearance by the mighty Lord Solar Steve and the rest of the team. Instead I am playing a guard list that is very death starry... in fact I believe I am fielding the main gun from the Death Star...

That's right... I am fielding the magnificent Deathstrike Missile Launcher... protected by 3 Leman Russ Executioners with side sponson plasma cannons... Here is the full list just for kicks... it might change up a bit but so far this seems like the best options for most fun.

Heavy 1
Leman Russ Executioner + S.S. Plasma Cannons x3

Heavy 2
Deathstrike Missile Launcher

Troop
Vet. Squad w/plasma gun & Lascannon

HQ
Techpriest Enginseer

That's it... 4 kill-points of awesome...

Oh and just to let my opponents in on a great secret... so maybe you'll let me shoot the Deathstrike Missile Launcher... Every time It goes off... I am taking a shot... so.... fun times!!!!!!

Cannot wait to see everyone again this year and enjoy ourselves!

Until next time, burn some heretics, kill some mutants, and do it always....

And so it begins.... Lord Solar Whips his Nobz Back and Forth!

So as I stated awhile back, I was buying parts for a new army for the Team Tournament at Adepticon. As also stated, it would be orky.... and so it is, I have decided to run my Death Star as the most ill fated and hated of the ork death stars.... the Nob Biker squad... I do not have the details of the list completely hammered out just yet, however that does not mean I could not be working on the models themselves.

Over the past few weeks the DFG crew as well as other local gamers have been heading up to our FLGS and painting and assembling our armies on Wednesday nights. The result of this has been a big inspiration for myself to get to work on my list and the models I need to complete it. So far I have 3 Nob Bikers down.

Wednesday night paint night? Yes! Please, come join us.

Wednesday Night at our FLGS was at first nothing more than a few broke, bored and nothing better to do guys hanging out at our store. However we had noticed that a lot of new players were coming into the store, buying armies, but like a lot of people out there, they were not getting any painting done (and then we looked inward at ourselves and found, we were not either.)

So then we decided it was time to perhaps, since Saturday was our 40k night, to make Wednesday our paint night, and have everyone come up to the store and paint. It proved a LARGE success, so much so that for a time not only were loads of people coming up to paint their models on a weeknight, and give and get tips on how to do so, but it made Wednesday night a -second- 40k night. We were stoked, it was great! A large rising in new players kept coming....

And then... we stopped painting... we just played... People took the hobby back to their basement or bedroom, and no longer came to the store to paint just to play.

It was not long before Wednesday night was simply a night to come game, and then slowly that has even faded. We might see a few people up there now, and personally, I hold myself responsible as one of those who should have, and could have, kept painting up at the store. To encourage new players to paint and to model.

Last week I decided I was going to paint some models at the store, to get back revved up into the mode of which I have been lacking for over a year now. As I sat down worked, and talked with my friends it reminded me why it was so enjoyable before, and why is was such a huge success at the start.

With just playing games, we had taken away part of the social aspect of the hobby, the sitting around a table, talking about the lore of the universe, and painting our models.

This is what I now am striving to bring back, so for those of you in Michigan, who might have their Wednesday night's free:

Come Join us at Evolution Games for Wednesday Night Paint Night. Grab a few models to paint, your brushes and paint and sit down and enjoy yourself. Visit with me and the other DFG guys, who I am also calling on to do this.

Come one, come all and paint well.....

Until next time, burn some heretics, kill some mutants, and do it as always...

Team Death Star

Hello my long lost companions! As I am sure plenty of you know, I have had to take a long break from both 40k and posting due to my travel schedule for work. However starting next week.... I do not travel for OVER a month, nearly two, and maybe even longer!
