New Nurgle, pt. 2 -- a hands on with the new Putrid Blightkings

Hey everyone, KrautScientist here. In the last post published here on DFG, TJ already talked about the possible conversion potential of the new Putrid Blightkings. And now that the kit has been with us for a while, allow me to talk in more detail about my own experience with these guys. Step this way to learn more.

It Came from the GT!? Incredible Thousand Sons Cavalry!

One of the things I wanted to do when I went to the GT at Dropzone Games (and well any event I go to), was to cover some of the great, painted armies that people brought to the event. There were several great armies on hand (and the Best Painted will get a post of its own soon), but Dameon Green's army from Khepri's Eternal Legion really blew me away. First off, the display was really nice, but once you look at the army, you start to see some really exciting stuff. Let's take a closer look:

Showcase: Kitbashed Legio Custodes army

Hey everyone, KrautScientist here. Yet another showcase post from me. And while the project I would like to show you today may be a little rougher around the edges than my World Eaters, Traitor Guard or INQ28 retinue, it’s because this is a fun project that helps me to recharge my hobby batteries whenever I feel tired of my other armies.

So what we are looking at here is a small army of Pre-Heresy Custodes, the Empire’s personal bodyguard. I have been in love with the Legio Custodes ever since I read through German WD 112 (from April 2005): Not only did it feature rules for a Horus Heresy campaign, but it also marked the first time I ever saw Dave Taylor’s spectacular Legio Custodes army. There was something about those guys that really clicked with me. And even now, quite a few years later, Dave’s Custodes are still easily one of my favourite armies ever.

Project Hellworm Update 5: We Have Lift-Off! ScratchBuilt Nurgle Heldrake!

Old School here and the Hellworm (Nurgle Heldrake scratchbuild) is ready to take flight! He got his shiny new rotors last night and minus a few small elements on the rotors and a couple little things I want to do to the body, I am finished with the actual model itself. Let's take a look at it with some shot for size comparison as well.

It Came From the Forums Update: Kolonel Grotsnik's Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons!

Old School Terminator here, checking in on the subject of a previous It Came From the Forums, Kolonel Grotsnik, previously featured for his Cybernetica and Grot Rebellion armies, the artist hinted at the potential for a Thousand Son army with a single model. Since then, the Forces of Prospero have come together in a VERY big way!

First Batch of Varghiests Counts as Fiends!

Old School here and tonight I un-boxed and built the first three fiends for my budding Daemons Project. The Varghiest was simply too good to pass up and since the Daemon project is really just about me fielding as many cool looking models as I can stand, they fit in - in fact, they are the new cool kids in town!

Khorne Thunderwolf Cav Counts As Conversion: Another Khorne Khav joins the 14th!

Old School here with another update to the Painting Challenge and another of my Khorne Counts As Thunderwolf Cavalry or "The Khorne Khav" as I call them. This Wolf Lord (or Skull Lord) was made with a Forge World Berzerker conversion kit, a devestator powerfist, a plastic jugger (obviously) and some various parts from other kits. This is the fourth Khorne Lord I have made so far for the 14th Black Crusade and I have plenty of photos (though, not the best, damn 4MP), so lets take a look.

Canis Fireborn WIP

Hey everyone. Since OST posted up his counts-as I had to put up my loyalist version so that he didn't take all the glory. A few months back OST and I decided it'd be awesome to put together some counts as Thunder Wolf.

Here is my vision of counts as Thunderwolves, Salamander style.

I really just sort of played with this idea until it eventually came together and really had no plans what so ever. The original weapon was a long, jagged sword that came to about the nose of the Carnosaur. I scrapped that for this massively over sized, almost comedic, thunderhammer. I still have a shield from Chapterhouse to put on this guy too.

Completed Khorne Lord Zhofur for the 14th Black Crusade!

Old School here with some photos of the Forge World Lord Zhofur model I painted up today. I impulse-grabbed him from my case and got to work on him. When I first modelled him nearly a year ago, I wanted to use him as a Chaos Terminator Lord with Daemon Weapon and I wanted to keep the nude head for another potential project. I hated the trophy racks as they limit the range of motion you get from the model, so I checked them and used some green stuff to fill the gaps - along with tons of pinning. I based him on crushed-up floor tile.
.

He was already primed Valspar's Ruddy Brown (reddish-brown color), then hit all the red areas with Mechrite Red foundation. I then hit all the brass areas with bestial brown and proceeded to wash the entire model in a good thick wash of delvin mud wash, ensuring I pushed it into every crack and gap.

Once that was done, I hit the eyes and the small meters on the back of the model with layers of green starting with Thraka foundation, followed by dark angels green, goblin green, snot green and the hints of scorpion green. The areas that were mechrite, were then painted with thin layers of red gore to build up and blaend the areas shaded by the wash to give the model a time-tested look. I love gritty!

Once I had the red gore just right, I hit the high areas with a solid highlight of blood red, then went through with thin layers and blended it onto the model to fade into the red gore. The camera, no matter how I adjust the brightness with photoshop hates red (as we have seen in previous posts), but hopefully you get the idea. The powerfist on the base was painted blue and heavily weathered with the idea of adding a little balanced contrast to the base that also ties to the planets in the World Eaters emblems.

The brass was worked up with Game Colour brass, followed by a wash of 50/50 delvan Mud/ Gryphone Sepia. I then hit the highest points with some flow-aided Dwarven Brass.

The world on the World Eaters Shoulder Pad was done with a progression of greens on the continents much like the eyes. I just thought it looked cool to make the planet look like an actual globe!

The Commisar on his back is an awesome touch by the designers at Forge World. The painting was simple with such smooth, flowing lines and surfaces to work with. There are a ton of little details on it that you don't come to appreciate until you sit down to paint it - like the little medal on his chest.

So the question then becomes "How does Zhofur work into your Counts as themed Black Legion 14th Crusade?" Well, he does have a black powerfist (lol).
.
Seriously, this was a chance to paint a great Forge World model and I will figure out a way to run him. He could easily stand in for Abbadon in some lists or even Logan since he has a fist and an axe. No matter what, you can rejoice that you will see this guy in battle reports coming soon.
.
That's all I have to show off today - I'm sure I'll be building some new, fun stuff tonight. Let me know what you think of Zhofur. Feedback is always welcome.

T Sons Sorcerer joins the Black Crusade!

.
Old School here and it is shaping up to be another 14th Black Crusade weekend at the casa. I just painted this Chaos Sorcerer this morning. it was a bit of a repaint from its days as a tson sorceror. here he is ready to serve the webmaster in the role of librarian, sorcerer or rune priest. I am working on another, plastic sorcerer this weekend, painting the forge world Khorne lord and a few other things. hopefully Big Jim remembers the DREADCLAW templates. if he does I will whip up a part two to the DREADCLAW post soon.

.
I have more photos of this sorcerer that were meant to show off the freehand eye of uprising, but the Droid macro was not agreeing with me. I know it isn't super exiting as all it is is just a new paint on an old model, bit I'd love to hear what you think. more on the way, guys!

Chaos Lord on Daenomic Horse! 14th Black Crusade!

Old School here. Still Sick and Still busy. Here is another "biker". This one could fit into a Space Marine Command Squad for counts as, could make an excellent "wolf Lord on Bike" or an awesome Chaos Lord on Demonic Steed.

This is kitbash taken to the extreme. He has the artificer type armour from the Death Company set, chaos bolters, the death company thunder hammer and obviously the Chaos knights stuff. I like the double shoulder pads and may stick with it for the rest of the bikers as it makes them look very gothic and hard and cool.

I am stuck on whether to just make the dark apostle a word bearer or to go for the gothic Word Bearer bikers with black legion paintjobs on thier left arms. hmmmmm.

In case you may be wondering, the bolters on this and the last model are to represent the twin linked bolters on the bikes. I don't want to take a ton of time converting an elaborate twin linked bolter system for each biker and while it would be cool to give them custodian type weapons, it wouldn't fit for each model. So there it is a easy solution. No harder to swallow than a turbo boosting horse LOL!

Well, got some more work to do. Look out for a video and a few painted models coming out of my work bench tonight!

Dark Apostle on Horse, 14th Black Crusade!

.
Old school here and I am working like a madman in the dungeon on models and painting all day today. Here is a Dark Apostle on bike ... er ... horse to count as a chaplain on bike or wolf priest on bike in the 14th Black Crusade counts as armies I am building.
.

.
I used a variety of bits on this model from the chaps knights kit and while I was going to mount all my bikers on bikes, the horses just seemed to embody the dark Gothic horror I prefer for Chaos space marines.
.

.
As a last note, I will give huge props to the person who can guess where I got the bits to make the braziers on his backpack.
.

.
Well, I'll be at this all day, so expect more painted and unpainted epic bad guys churned out from me all day.

the 14th black crusade pics and a plan

Old school here, coming to you from the road via Droid. I just wanted to share some pics of my budding 14th Black Crusade. The 14th black crusade is my attempt to renew my creativity in my Black Legion and to build an army that fits the look and the army I want to run. Basically, my counts as. Haters go ahead and hate it, but it iS going to happen, so here are some of the first models.

Anyway, the first army I plan to do counts as is the space wolves. The forge world models you see riding juggernaghts there are wolf lords on thunder wolves. I picked these guys for no other reason than fw zerks on plastic juggers are awesome, so expect to see many of them. The black legion marine you see in the middle is a repainted model from my early painting days. It felt good to get him a proper paintjob and to give him some graffiti on his armor. I always loved the graffiti on the rogue trader marines, so I figured I would work it into my legion. Now, obviously, the standard bolter guy is universal, so he will fill in for grey hunters, tac dudes ect.

The terminator are all set up to run aS either chaos terminators or wolfguard. All the models you see here will be finished soon as well as the revamp of a few dozen more black legion, my counts as model for lysander/arjac and more before I move on to the illuminati, an elite branch of aspiring sorcerers that count as grey knights. I will also build and show off some more useful counts as like dark apostles for chaplain and reclusiachs and plenty of black legion lord. So, rejoice brothers, the slavery of your codex to the false emperor ends soon. Oh, yeah, I also plan to do some fluff entries here to replace loyalist drivel from the codices.
.
One more word from the road. I will be visiting my very first flgs this week, toy soldier in amesbury Massachusetts. So if you are a local, shoot me a comment to set up a game. Other than that I hope the pics turned out and feedback OS always welcome.

Chaosgerbil's Elect of Tzeench: Counts as Taken to the next Level!

Old School here and in case you have never been to Chaosgerbil's Lair, you have been missing out on the progress of one of the best counts as armies in the works right now - The Elect of Tzeench! From the photos, it should be obvious what everything represents (the mark of any good counts as army), so here are some great shots from his blog. Enjoy.

Even more without the Fenrisian Wolves.

I love the predator riding on writhing tentacles.

His vehicle lot is awesome. The yellow writing and the faces painted in make it stand out and give it some serious flavor. I am not sure what that sea cucumber thing is, but it also looks very awesome.
.
I am promoting this army and his site because I want people to see what Counts-as armies can be. I think a lot of the people out there who are opposed to counts-as armies feel that way because they have been exposed to peple who just busted out a different power-armored army, put it on the table and said, look these guys count as Wolves or they count as angels today, with no modification and nothing done to make their models characterful within their own theme. I can understand how this can seem lame and I can also see when people bust out counts-as just to play their own models to make counts as lists with the most powerful units at the moment how that can be lame as well.
.
What I want people who have been exposed to those kind of counts as armies and people who oppose it in general to see is that some folks prefer a particular army's look (for me it is Chaos, for Cvinton it is Salamanders) and they want to use the army and its look and concepts to represent other books so they can play their models and their army more. They want to convert cool looking shit ad put it on the board for everyone at the FLGS to do backflips over - clearly, this is what Chaosgerbil was going for. CVinton right now is building a Salamanders army with guys riding Carnasaurs, Cold Ones and Stegadons, guys armed with huge, dragon-headed thunderhammer and generally cool counts-as stuff and it does blow my mind to see it even in concept.
.
I am building my Black Legion into a 14th Black Crusade force - an army that can represent any power-armored army with cool twists. Right now I am working on my fleshweavers - hulking half-machine, half-daemon creatures that will count as iron priests on thunderwolves who will lead genetic failures (cyberwolves) into the fray. I am drawing up concepts for a Black Coven - an army of chaos sorcerors and apprentices to act as the Grey Knights and i will keep going and converting and having fun with my chosen army.
.
With that being said, there are other good counts as out there, Black Matt is working on a World Eaters commission that can function in various books - We have all seen BoLS' Death Guard who can be both loyal and traitor.
.
Let me be the first to say that if you have a badass counts-as army that functions in several books, no matter what army it is and it is WYSIWYG, we will show it off here and promote it for you! Got a link, hit us up! Want to see more of Chaosgerbil's army or add him to your blogroll? Check out his blog at the link at the top of the article - let him know what you think.

Khorne Cav Lord Update: New Color on Jugger

Old School here with another WIp of my Khorne Kavalry Lord. I really am making him my test model as I have already adopted the things I like about him into the plastic models I am working on. His jugger was originally red, but no matter the contrast, it was still red on red, which just doesn't work and across multiple models, it would have been complete failure.
When I tested this scheme the first time on the jugger model, it was actually on one of my plastic ones and honestly, the plastics seem to take the paint much better thatn this one has - same for washes (the crevices in the plastics also lend themselves to washes. I like the contrast of color, it ties into a muti-legion theme. It also has iron and brass elements to jive with my Black Legion's Sivler and Gold. I think I will keep the paint scheme color wise, now all I need to do is touch up some tide marks, touch up some errant highlights and paint the back of the shield.

It may be hard to see, but the head of Sicarius is back there - a rather bold claim, but I think he could take the master of the 2nd company!

I wanted to try the green lit-up eyes and I think i like them enough to keep them with my other juggers, though I am not sure how attached I am to the gloss effect blood ... maybe adding some more variant reds and browns to the existing spots.

Well, now I point the horn to you. Let me know what you think - should I be cast from the Warp for my lack of skills, are there things I could work on within my skill level or am I on the right track and sure to rack up many skulls? Let's hear your thoughts.

Khorne Khavalry Lord painting WIP ... Very WIP!

Old School here with a quick update on my metal Khorne Khavalry Lord. This is VERY WIP, but I wanted to show where it is at after a couple hours of painting before unleashing the fully painted model.
Having much of the main work and highlighting done on all the reds, it is now time to clean up the brass and then move to the small details like the head, the trophies on the back and highlighting the skulls.

One of the main reasons I am posting this WIP is because I am worried that this is all too much red ... but at the same time, it looks very striking on the table. What do you all think so far?

As always feedback is more than welcome.

Forge World Berserkers on Plastic Juggernauts!

Old School here with some Forge World Berserkers riding plastic Juggernauts! The other day, when I made the metal lord, It sparked something in me. I started staring at him with my Forge World bitz box in hand and I knew something awesful was going to come of his creation ... then Evolution Games got a few boxes in for the End of Days and I just had to buy a box.
.
So far, these two fellows have come from this merger - One with a set of claws and one with a giant, cavalry-style hammer!

Alright first up is the Thunder-hammer and shield Zerk. He is riding one of the new plastic Juggers, which are a pure joy to put together (I timed it at 7 minutes, clipped, cleaned and glued for just the juggernaut). Anyway, I wanted a Zerk who looked like he is ready for a siege and ready to take on the biggest thing on the field with a giant hammer. The shield is from the Chaos Knights cav box. The body and shoulder pads are from the FW World Eaters conversion set. The head is the bare head from the FW World Eaters Terminator conversion set, The hammer shaft and arm are the icon pole from a Chaos Space Marine set, the actual hammer head is made from two pieces of sprue glued together. I then added the brass and card to dress it up a bit. There is obviously a little glue to be scraped off there.

From the back, you can see his trophies. That is something I wanted every zerk to have on his jugger and I think if you have earned yourself a juggernaut, you must have a great skull-taking career. His rack includes a Marine, a rotten head, a skull and a tyranid warrior skull.

The new jugger kits are light and offer so much more frexibility in terms of dynamic position. This one's front legs don't even touch the ground. I have read a few different books where cavalry used hammers and they were either very short in the handle or very long. I thought it would look really awesome to give this guy a long hammer - the better to stamp the icon into skulls!

Here he is from the front, I cut a bolt pistol arm to fit the shoulder the way it does here, so that his arm is held out as if he is bellowing out a challenge as he charges forward. The basing here is not done, but I have been using floor laminate tiles to achieve this effect.

The second Zerk is this fellow here with the huge claws. I fought hard with myself about using these claws because they are huge - they are meant for a termie. So I cut the down and although they are still very huge, I think they work well for the aggression captured in the model.

Alright, you can see he boasts the head of a Sanguinary Guard, amoung a collection of more mundane trophies, though the other marine head comes from the Commander kit.

Once again, the leaping, charging aggression in these plastic juggers really makes them look vicious!

And here he is from the front. I used the FW kits of course for the body and pads, the bare head from the FW Lord Zhofur kit, the claws from the chaos Terminator lord, the pack is from the possessed box and overall, I am pretty happy with this model.
.
Putting these together was really fun. The juggers were a breeze to assemble, leave virtually no mold lines, the kit has sooo many extra parts, like extra heads for the juggers, tons of hellblades and head variants for the bloodletters who were meant to ride these. An awesome icon and an instrument - pretty well worth the cost.
.
Having all the forge world stuff on hand was really great as it allowed me to assemble some models I have always thought would look so cool. I think I may just paint these guys and see what happens from there. I can say that these guys have gotten me out of a funk I have been in the last couple of weeks and have inspired me to pcik up the brush again to finish off some projects I have laying around (well, I might just paint one of these guys first .... maybe !)
.
Feedback is always welcome, let me know what you think. Official End of Days info and details will be up tomorrow!
