Local Tourney Preparation - 1850

Ho all!
Fly back with plans to get out of the house and attend a local event. One of our three Lansing area game stores is hosting an event coming up on January 5th and from what I understand, it will be an 1850 point tournament with no Escalation, Dataslates or Stronghold allowed. There goes my Bel'akor idea.

TJ's Necron/ Chaos Marines at $250 Tourney Round 3 Batrep and Final Thoughts!

TJ here to talk about the third and final game in a recent tournament I attended at Blue Ox Games in Greenville, NC. The tourney was 1850, with a $250 grand prize. I ran my Necrons and CSM allies. If you want more of the list, check out the first part here, game two here or ... just read part three along with my final thoughts below:

Guest Post: Jeff's Initial Space Marine Army List Thoughts

Initial Army List Thoughts

With all the choices out there, its hard to choose exactly what chapter you want.  Thankfully the quasi build-a-chapter style of the new book can really help those power armor fan boys out there!  Jeff chimes in today with his well written thoughts on picking your chapter.

Welcome back. In my previous post, I introduced myself and what I am planning. Today I would like to share with you my initial thoughts in regards to the various chapter tactics and potential army lists with each of them

Reader Response - Nerd Crush List

Fly Molo back again!
My last article seemed to stir up some interest on the inter-web and I recieved some good feedback along with a few requests for help. Well, who am I to turn away a request for help? Asking me for help with Warhammer is like asking a one-legged dude for help with your next ass-kicking contest, but I'll do my best. A reader (Knight of Infinite Resignation) question from the blog comments section:

Using Your Nerd Crush Unit

... and maybe win a game with it!
Fly Molo back again.
There was a time back in 5th edition where I played a lot of Chaos. I had somewhere around 30,000 points of mixed Chaos Marines forces and I could field whatever I needed, except triple Vindicator lists (which strangely I can now, but I own less points) or triple Land Raider lists. Most options were available to me.

A Gift

Ho,
Fly Molo here again, attempting to bring a little goodness to your day.
That's been a new thing of mine lately. Not so much the being good thing, but attempting to bring that good to as many people as I can. I think that's a noble thing to do and it is something that I want to be able to draw from my entire life as a source of positivity. Alas, this is a Warhammer blog.

Jesse's Gk list breakdown

I have been fielding this 1850 Grey Knights list for the past several months to much success.  The list began in preparation for the TSHIFT open tournament out in Seattle.

Initially I ran IG allies for some cheap firepower, Vendettas, and my favorite IC ever Guardsmen F'ing Marbo.  After some a few games of testing I didn't enjoy how ineffective lasguns are and the how the army just didn't seem to mesh right.  I felt I wasn't getting enough from my guardsmen to equate their point cost.  Coming from a competitive MtG background where a card didn't make the cut if it didn't either give card advantage or absolutely murder for the mana cost, i try to bring the same thought process to my list building.  Enough talk, here's the list.

The 40k Friendly at Adepticon: List Ideas

This year, instead of trying to scramble together a team for the Team Tournament at Adepticon, SAMSQUANCH MONSTER and I have decided to both enter the 40k Friendly!

With this comes a different set of challenges, first and foremost, with the advent of 6th edition, I actually have to build my Vendettas (what they have only been new in box for a year and a half...) and some other nice things to round out the 1500 points of my list. That's right... instead of the 1850 we have been playing at we have to scale back down to 1500... In fact with how 6th edition is, its not just a scale back to me. It is a whole rethinking of the list.

With this in mind I thought I would start testing a list that I came up with earlier this week. I don't mind feedback on it from my fellows on the net so here we go!

Your Questions and Topics, The Lord Solar Answers... (part 2)

The topic that I was asked to talk about for this installment was by ServvsUmbrarum who also has a blog, The Initiate, (though he has not posted in awhile, hopefully this will encourage him to!) He asked:
"I've got about 2k worth of guard and I was wondering if you could cover an odd topic but something I've been struggling with.
How can one build an army list that is both fun to play with and against. One of my biggest issues with the way I play guard is that I just sit back and shoot. I love my other codex's because I'm constantly moving, weighing options but my current Guard list is just so...sit there and shoot, target priority being the only real skill I have to use.
So I guess the topic I'd like to see is. "How to make a dynamic guard list that works with the unique nature and strengths of the codex without parking lot.
I hope this makes sense. I never like to make my opponent feel disengaged from the battle and am a strong believer in the 'social contract'."

Your Questions, The Lord Solar Answers (All About Allies)

O.K. so with the last post I did, a few questions/topic requests were tossed to me by some faithful readers. So I figured I would take the time to answer the first today like I said I would!

First question was from Grazer who also writes for a couple blogs, Rogue Trader and Claws and Fists so check him out (and perhaps he will join the blog roll legion for DFG after this). His question was as follows
"I'd be interested in what you think are the best options for Allies for IG, and whether you even think they are necessary at all.
I have used Blood Angels infantry to try and strengthen my midfield and to fight for objectives, but they are quite expensive and obviously limit the amount of artillery  tanks and flyers you can select from the IG codex."

Necron Hybrid Mech Part 1: The 1500 Pt Core, Thoughts from Experience

Old School here with some thoughts from the table tops. I have always believed that Experience Creates Generals and Netlists Create Generics, so while the web loses its collective mind over Necron Air Forces, I want to talk about a list concept I have run since picking the codex up in 5th Edition and how it has translated to 6th edition based on my experience with some secondary information provided through observations of CVinton's performance with a similar take on the Crons. I will say now that this article isn't meant to create another netlist or say "This is the best," it is simply an article about a single concept based on a year of play with the new codex and with these units in particular.

Walkers, Tanks and Transports... still worth it?

Last night I played another game of 6th, and once again, found myself REALLY enjoying it.  The new scenarios, the warlord traits, everything! The other neat thing about this game was I went back in time a little bit with my list making.

You all know I have been touting the foot guard list with a TON of heavy weapons teams filled with copious amounts of lascannons. Those lists are great, and powerful and definitely get the job done! (Getting me tied for 3rd in a tourney not so long ago in which I made a few REALLY bad play mistakes against one of my most dreaded foes Daemons!)

"Rise of the Lascannon" Round 2..... FIGHT!: Battle Report

As you all know I recently started a new list that is really different. The reasons why and what the list is can be found here. Now I have played my second game with this list, and against Grey Knights at that against DFG's very own... The Judge.

Lascannons arise! The Rebirth of my foot-guard, and the death of Chimera spam

So a couple weeks ago I had decided to try out a new list (for a reminder on the list, or if you didn't read it the first time, here is a link to the article.) This list... its gone to the cleaners... and will never return. After three games I have thrown in the towel. I know, I know, I promised to give it 10 full games, but 3 was all it took to realize that the list just was not going to work.

Thunder Punch! (with a look at the FW skin wolf model!)

I finished the Thunder Wolves I plan on running today in the tournament at Titan's.  I'm really torn this weekend between an effective Necrons list....and this silly list.  The missions really make me an auto lose but I think its a rare opportunity that I would get to play this list and for people to play against this list.

Imperial Guard: Static shock no more

Let's be honest with one another, sometimes, your winning list is boring as hell. Take mine for example, it wins... a lot. I mean, it does not win every game, and some games really make me struggle, but in most single game match ups it wins. Unfortunately for my opponents it is usually not a fun game, or so I have been told, because I play a very static Imperial Guard gun-line. I do not move much at all... ever. Lets check out what is normally my list just to get an idea.

The Beginning of the end of the beginning.... A new army on the horizon

As every hobbiest knows, at some point during their time playing the game, they become unhappy with how things currently are happening, on how their army performs, or how their color scheme is coming together.

Personally… I have none of these problems, I love my Imperial Guard. I love the models I use (mmmm D.K.K.), I love the multiple ways my army can be played, and almost every game I play I perform well, and win a good chunk, far far more than I lose, and I absolutely LOVE my dirty, grimy mud filled look my army has, no matter what others think or say about it (and thank you to those who appreciate it, and ask questions about it).

Wait… Steve… no Leman Russ? What’s wrong?

That is an exact question asked to me when I revealed my new list to a few people a couple weeks ago at Evolution games. I understand why as well, as I have for the longest time been a big proponent of the Leman Russ tanks and all the glorious damage they bring. I have won more than a fair share, or taken second, in enough tournaments to have proven my point of their power and durability if properly played and supported with the rest of your army (once again I preach balance in a list and how that makes entire codices better if used). However that does not mean I do not like to vary up my lists every once in a while and as such with the recent purchase of 3 Vendettas/Valkyries I decided it was time to take a look at some other ideas, and I built the following list with a little extra input from The Judge and Samsquanch Monster.

Lord Solar Steve will be at Combat Patrol on Saturday!

Hello all and welcome to my last post before Adepticon! A quick update for you all, I will be participating in the Saturday evening Combat Patrol, so if you want to stop by and say hello, I will gladly talk with you between rounds! I am currently having some trouble trying to work though my list as I was just informed yesterday that I would be in the tournament, however I am confident that I will enjoy myself and hopefully put on a good showing like I did last year.

List Building and Playtesting: How to start a good army list

Captain Obvious here, been some time since I’ve written an article, but here it goes.
Since my glorious return to Warhammer 40k I have noticed some things that seem to be frustrating some people locally and on forums, and really shouldn’t be.  In this article I am going to cover how to build and properly test a list.  Some people seem to think that putting a GOOD competitive list together is easy and you can just pick and choose what units you want, sadly this is very far from the truth.
