Kromlech Bionic bits for Iron Hands and Iron Warriors

TJ here to show off some bits I bought from Kromlech that I think could be useful for the Iron Hands and (for me) the Iron Warriors. These bionic bits are very well detailed, pretty inexpensive and will draw attention to your army!

Breaking the Established Norms, Your Take!

TJ here to talk about how we build and paint our armies to either fit the established background of our games or how we break with those traditions and why. For myself, I have always ridden the fence on the subject because I am an avid fan of the Black Library and to date have read all of the Horus Heresy novels and several omnibuses from the current millennia. When I start a project the background is always right there in my face and I am always tempted to satisfy that itch of making a conversion and paintjob that satisfies that background, however, sometimes I feel like I am painting myself into a corner in more ways than one.

Perturabo Fully Painted and Ready for War!

Not long ago I asked what people thought my next project would be. Keeping in step with the unsubtle nature of the Iron Warriors, I have decided to announce my return to the IV Legion with the posting of their gene-father, the Lord of Iron, Perturabo. The model I chose is the Pro-Turbo model from Hi-Tech Miniatures, which as you can imagine, is a great fit for Perturabo. In fact, with further research into the Heresy series, this model is nearly dead accurate. In any case, I really enjoyed painting the model that will form the centerpiece of the Heresy-Era Iron Warriors and their cohort. Let take a look at the model and where I drew inspiration from.

Building a Better Iron Warrior with Third Party Bits!

Old School here with more of my "Building a Better Chaos Space Marine series" and while I was just going to do an undivided post, I am coming across more and more great stuff every day and we will actually be looking at building a better Iron Warrior today and we will do so looking at 3rd party bits. I would also like to say, these kits would be great for building pretty much any mech aligned Marine Legion, whether it be Iron Hands or their successors or even some of the Salamanders. Anyway, let's take a look at a post filled with bionic bits!

How To: DIY Mechandrites for Your Warpsmith and a Look at my Perturabo!

Old School here with a little DIY mechandrite tutorial and also to show off my Perturabo for the Iron Warriors. Perturabo is the primarch of the Iron Warriors, for those of you who don't know, but he will likely fill the role of a Terminator Lord in my forces or maybe even Abbadon. Why the Mechandrites then? Why not!

Iron Warriors Progress; Two squads in MkII Armor!

Old School here to mark my progress on my Iron Warrior army. So far I have two squads basically done and just awaiting final details like shoulder pad markings, tightening up here and there on the painting and mostly the addition of their Champions. In the meantime, however, I would like to treat you to a few shot of the 20 Iron Warriors I have completed so far.

Iron Warrior Sorcerer Base Built; Time to Paint!

Have you ever wanted to see your enemy torn down from his defenses and forced to watch his fortress and friends destroyed before he suffers a slow, crushing fate? So has my Sorcerer and unlike us, he has the power to do it! That is right folks, I decided to have my sorcerer based on an Imperial Fist being crushed to death by chains, let's take a closer look:

Iron Warriors Sorcerer Conversion Update, Fluff and Basing Ideas Brewing!

Old School here with a quick update on the Iron Warrior Sorcerer I started working on the other day. This work is still a work in progress, but he is moving along rather nicely. When I was looking for ideas for Iron Warriors Sorcerers, I was shocked by the semi-lackluster results I got. It seemed like nobody had really made an Iron Warriors Sorcerer that grasped the legion character. I think there are several reasons for this and we will get to know this fellow as we walk through the photos.

Iron Warriors Rhino - The Rust Bucket - DFG Painting Challenge!

Old School is back in the ring with the painting challenge! I am here to unveil the Rust Bucket, an Iron Warriors Rhino that looks like it needs some CLP and a wire brush! There are plenty of pics, so let's dive right in ...

DFG Painting Challenge: Iron Warrior Havocs by OST!

Old School here with a quick look at my latest entry for the DFG Painting Challenge - These Iron Warrior Havocs. Yeah, I know some folks were looking for the Tervigon, but that is a very special peice and will take some time. For now though, the 14th Black Crusade requires missile launchers, especially with what I have in mind!

Busy in the workshop, Salamanders progress, Daemon Prince WIP!

Just as the painting bug bit me a few weeks ago, the building fix needed to be ... well fixed this week. Here are some pics of what I have been working on.
First there is a shot of a few of My Salamanders up close. I used the GamesDay Sgt from 05 and crafted him a combi-melta. I have placed a Dragon hide cape from the Dark Elf Corsairs bitz in conjuction with each powerpack and of course the squad includes a flamer and multi-melta.
.
Aside from that, I rehabbed an old Landspeeder (Thanks for the idea Drunken Samuria) that was a beater from an old bitz box I bought on Ebay (cash for clunkers). I added the heavy flamer and multi-melta from my bitz box. It still needs some work but has come a long way from the bottom of my 'soon to be scenery box'.
.
Other than that, I spruced up a couple Assault on Black Reach Dreads to stand in as my DP dreads until something much better (FW) comes along).
.
And almost forgot. I have been using a tired old Fantasy Prince as my Lash Prince for some time and since I went Iron Warriors for all my non-marked Chosen and Oblitz, I have also decided to make an Iron Warriors Daemon Prince. I used the standard 40k daemon prince body (also from the bitz box) and gave it a defiler mask and some wires from the Ork Deff Dread box. Then I added some green stuff around the neck to make it look all veiny and roided-up. Next I added the Penitent Engine arm (Awesome bit by the way) and green stuffed it on and did my best 4th grade sculpting to make musclature and tissue mixed into the buzz saw mechanical arm.
.
More to come, along with a painted Nurgle Daemon Prince (I promise). Let me know what you think!

Iron Warriors Chosen Squad painting stage one!

Alright, I got the first stage of the Chosen squads paintjob finished and I figured I should write about it in case there are any future Warsmiths out there. After the models were primed black, I drybrushed grey heavily over the entire model. The first coat was a little transparent, so I hit the high areas and the large grey area with another coat of codex grey.
.
Next, I ran tin bitz over all the areas that will eventually be gold. Tin bitz is pretty thick and should only take one coat. Once that is finished, take a look and make sure you got everything you meant to paint gold later.
.
With that complete, generously wash the models in Badab Black and let them dry (prefferably overnight, but if you must, then 2 hours should do.)
.
This will give you a dark and gritty base to jump from for stage two, which will involve brightening the gold areas and adding metallics to the grey areas. This is the same method I used for my oblitz. Also, don't worry about the pouches and holsters. Those can all be attended to in the detail stage of the paint job. Feel free to comment, these guys are on their way to a big game tonight; Iron Warriors/Death Guard paired with Black Templars vs. Eldrad and his space Elves and the Crimson Fists! Wish me luck.

Iron Warrior Chosen Conversions! Meltas FTW!

After I fell for the Iron Warriors theme I painted on my oblitz and seeing as it broke up the "uh, another plague marine army" feel my army was starting to have, I decided that my 5 man chosen Melta squad would need to be done up as Iron warriors as well.
.
I decided that since they were chosen, that they are veterans, so I gave most of this group augmetics and either a cool helmet or an IW themed one. Then I started to think about how I deploy them (they always outflank), which made me think about the beginning of Storm of Iron and how the Iron Warriors snuck up on the Guard in the beginning, so I gave them kits from various bitz that I had laying around. Most have the standard Chaos pistol holster, but one has a bag filled with ammo and a bolter and E-tool strapped to his leg while another has a shotgun on his powerpack.
.
Hopefully these will be as much fun to paint as they were to convert. Let me know what you think!

More Iron Warrior Oblitz! A peek at my Heavy Support!

I didn't feel much like writing tonight, so here are 3 more oblitz that I painted up to match my first Iron Warrior Oblit a couple posts ago. I also figured that I would Drop in a pic of my painted Heavy Support section so far.

Finished Iron Warriors Obliterator!!

I am in a bit of a painting fever after the Plague Champion and I started on my oblitz today. I already had them modelled mostly like the one here, so Nurgle was out of the question. Originally, I planned to go Black Legion with them, but I think it has been done too much and I decided to pay homage to the Iron Warriors, the kings of heavy support (as are the oblitz these days).
.
This model was my test model and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I started by messily drybrushing all the flesh parts red and all the other surface areas codex grey. Next I painted the trim work and some weapons Tin Bitz. Then I washed the entire model Badab Black, which gives the whole model a kind of graphic novel look. Then I hit the broad metal areas with boltgun, the flesh parts with FolkArt colors plum Purple and Baby Pink and highlighted the Trim with Folk Art shades of metallic sierra Gold and Aztec Gold.
.
I look forward to painting 3 more of these over the weekend. As always, feel free to comment.
