This Company Hopes That We Won't Need Their Product One Day, And Here's Why

One of the saddest realities that we face is the fact that the world is an unsafe place. Violence against women is a global problem, and it’s one that women from all walks of life have to deal with each and every day. While it’s important that we work to fix the root of this issue, one company has created a piece of wearable technology that will at least help women stay physically safe and emotionally empowered in the meantime.

The accessory, called Athena, clips directly onto clothing and handbags, and it can even be worn as a necklace. The idea is that users keep it within arm’s reach so that they can use it if they ever feel threatened.

Here’s how it works:

When you feel threatened, all you have to do is reach for Athena — which is specifically designed to be discreet and fashionable. When you push the small button and hold it down for three seconds, the device emits a powerful alarm to stop attackers in the their tracks. But that’s not all.

Because Athena is linked to your smartphone through an easy-to-use app, alerts are sent to parties of your choosing whenever you push the button.

These alerts will include your exact location.

If you don’t feel like setting your Athena device to sound an 85-decibel alarm every time the button is pushed, you can set it to silent mode, much like a cellphone. That way, you can still discretely send out distress signals.

Athena is also designed to withstand the elements, so you’ll always be safe, rain or shine. Plus, the battery can last up to three months on a single charge!

And the team behind this amazing invention wants to do more than create a useful device.

Through a project called “ROAR for Good,” the entrepreneurs behind Athena plan to use proceeds from the product to support organizations that teach empathy to children across the country. Studies show that lack of the emotion correlates directly to a marked increase in sexual violence.

Much like anything worth accessorizing with, there are different color options available!

You can wear Athena in a ton of different ways! Style it to you heart’s content, ladies.

The creators of Athena have one simple goal, and that is “to protect women from physical assaults at the touch of a button.” It’s pretty clear that they’re well on their way to reaching that goal.

Bride Shares Wedding Dance With Man Who Saved Her Life With One Donation

On October 10, 2015, in Sartell, MN, a bride walked down the aisle and exchanged vows with the love of her life. There were tears, applause…the happiness was palpable.

Greta Perske met Tony Hokanson four years ago through mutual friends.

Their ceremony at Celebration Lutheran Church was beautiful.

And the reception was equally joyous…

But one dance, in particular, brought all the guests to tears.

No, that’s not Perske’s father…this is Danny Daniels — he’s the man who saved the bride’s life.

When the young bride was just 16 she was diagnosed with leukemia.

Less than a year after the devastating news, Perske’s condition had deteriorated.

She was on a bone marrow transplant waiting list when a miracle happened.

Daniels was her match.

After losing someone special in his life, the 51-year-old man and his wife signed up to donate.

Today, Perske credits Daniels’ act of kindness not only with her life but also her calling — she decided to become a nurse when she learned what he’d done for her.

She recalled her thought process to the St. Cloud Times: “I want to help save lives, too. I want to give back.”

Even though they’d only met once before, it’s easy to understand the incredible bond Perske and Daniels share with one another. And it’s no wonder everyone was in tears…and gave the bone marrow donor a standing ovation when he was announced at the reception!

These Construction Workers Gave A Sick Little Girl The Gift Of Friendship

Construction workers get a reputation for being pretty tough dudes. They work in all sorts of weather, slam hammers into things, and lift heavy stuff all day. It’s a very macho job. But even the most macho man has a soft side. That’s definitely the case for two construction workers in St. Louis, Missouri.

Travis Barnes and Greg Combs were working on a construction project across the street from a children’s hospital, and they made a point to wave at the kids every day. But one day, a little girl decided to wave back.

That is Vivian Keith, and she’s undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Vivian’s only link to the outside world was looking out the window at the construction workers. They began to wave to each other every day, and after a few months, they were all able to meet.

The small things can make the biggest impact. These construction workers are strong guys, but little Vivian has a different kind of strength. It’s clear that when it comes to this unlikely crew, there’s plenty of inspiration to go around.

Not only is the ceremony one of grandeur, it is essential to have a college degree if you want to get a job in many fields. It can change your life personally and professionally. Above all else, the ceremony provides you with unforgettable moments.

Like this moment, for instance. Christopher Norton is a college football player who suffered a spinal cord injury on the field. Doctors said he may never walk again, but when it came time for him to accept his diploma, something miraculous happened.

Meet Corporal Wojtek, The Bear Soldier Who Literally Climbed Up The Ranks

You’ve heard of war horses and even war elephants, but war bears? Yeah right! Who could possibly train such a huge, ferocious beast to participate in battle?

As it turns out, such a bear existed during World War II. Not only did a bear fight for Poland in certain battles, he even received a rank. After all, with the world in crisis, nations everywhere had to look to unconventional methods when fighting the enemy — and there’s nothing more unconventional than a bear soldier.

Wojtek, which means “smiling warrior,” was born in 1942 and found in Iran after his mother was killed. The bear soon became too big for his owner to take care of, and was then given to the Polish Army.

Soldiers took a liking to Wojtek, and Wojtek took a liking to their cigarettes and beer.

Yes, this is a bear kicking back with a cold one.

He would also wrestle with the soldiers. Not shockingly, he pretty much always won.

Due to a technicality, Wojtek had to be drafted into the Polish Army when they joined the British Army. This is when he achieved the rank of Private.

Wojtek actually lived among soldiers during various campaigns. He even rose in rank to Corporal. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, he helped transport ammo for the troops.

Because of Wojtek’s popularity with the Polish Army, his likeness became the official emblem of the army’s 22nd Transport Company.

After the war, Wojtek relocated to Scotland, where he eventually lived out the rest of his life at the Edinburgh Zoo.

Wojtek still remained popular years after the war, even appearing at times on the BBC. He passed away in December of 1963, standing at about six feet tall and weighing 500 pounds. This statue was placed in Krakow, Poland, two years ago to commemorates Wojtek’s influence on the Polish Army. A similar statue exists in Scotland.

Wojtek served as an inspiration to the Polish Army and boosted morale during a time when morale was incredibly low. Though he didn’t directly fight in the war, he still played an integral part and helped people when they needed him most. His contributions to history will not be forgotten.

Her Student Refused To Come To Class. What She Did Next Melted My Heart

No one likes a bully, and school bullies can be especially brutal. That’s exactly what Matthew of Winlock Miller Elementary School in Winlock, Washington, had to deal with every day, and he couldn’t take it anymore. The constant teasing he faced on a daily basis made him never want to come to class again.

Luckily, Matthew had an amazing teacher to help him out. Not only did his teacher get the bullying to stop, but she went above and beyond to make Matthew feel welcome.

This is Matthew. After shaving his hair off, students began to make fun of a bald spot on his head, which caused him great anguish.

Tori Nelson, Matthew’s teacher, wanted the bullying to stop immediately. Matthew refused to come to class and remove his hat, so Ms. Nelson let Matthew shave her head in exchange for his attendance.

Matthew took Ms. Nelson up on her offer. Now nobody can make fun of him, because his awesome teacher has the same haircut!

Watch the entire story below to see just how great Ms. Nelson really is.

Talk about accommodating! Ms. Nelson went beyond the call of duty to make Matthew feel okay about coming into class without a hat. We need more teachers in the world like Ms. Nelson, who would do anything for a student in need.
