Polyaspidoidea

Trachytes pauperior, copyright Bergen Museum.

Belongs within: Uropodina.

The Polyaspidoidea are a group of predatory mites that are most diverse in leaf litter, tree holes and moss in northern temperate regions (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Lindquist et al. 2009): Coxae I flanking broad tritosternal base, vertex and camerostome well developed, distinct pedofossae absent; palpgenu with five setae. Body usually covered in thick, ornamented cerotegument; adults with a fragmented or holodorsal shield, peritrematic sclerites fused with mediodorsal shield anterodorsally and bearing vertical setae, without a separate vertex shield element; marginal shields usually present, often fragmented into smaller scutella or fused with mediodorsal shield, pygidial shield present, narrow to broad, sometimes fragmented, either nude or bearing one to several pairs of setae. Chelicerae elongate, without lyrifissure and with large to small digits, pilus dentilis absent. Peritremes well developed. Tritosternal base broader than long, laciniae fused basally, often subdivided distally. Femur I with nine setae (typically 1 4/3 1), genua III and IV each with one or two ventral setae, and tibia I with four dorsal and two ventral setae (2 2/1, 211 2(1)). Female epigynal shield rounded or trapezoidal and with slender paragynal elements, each carrying a seta (st5) and a pore, rarely fused to epigynal shield. Sternal region well sclerotized; large ventrianal shield present or incorporated into holoventral shield. Male with holoventral shield, genital opening between coxae III and IV, anterior genital valve sometimes with one pair of setae. Cerotegument usually thick, often reticulate, sometimes extended as wings on segments of legs I.

Uroobovella

Deutonymphs of Uroobovella marginatus on red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, from Porcelli et al. (2009). Legend from source: a, phoretic deutonymphs on pygidium; b, mites tethered (black arrows) on thorax and head; c, d, phoretic form from dorsum and venter, respectively, black arrow on terminal anus; e, left stigma; f, deutonymph: black arrow on left chelicera; g, conidia of Curvularia attached to shield seta of a deutonymph.

Belongs within: Uropodoidea.

Uroobovella is a genus of uropodoid mites in which both sexes have pedofossae and accessory setae in the intercoxal region. Metapodal lines are present and the female genital shield often bears an anterior projection in species of the subgenus Fuscuropoda; both these features are absent in the type subgenus (Evans & Till 1979). Species of Uroobovella may primarily feed on fungi and organic debris in animal nests and insect galleries (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Evans & Till 1979): Dorsal shield not divided. Levator tendon of movable digit of chelicera with sclerotised node. Palpfemur with five setae. Forked pilus dentis absent. Both sexes with accessory setae in the intercoxal region and pedofossae. Femur I with nine setae; genu I with a pair of ventral setae; genu III and IV without ventral setae.

Uropoda

Deuteronymphs of Uropoda orbicularis on dung beetle Aphodius, from Szymkowiak et al. (2007).

Belongs within: Uropodoidea.

Uropoda is a genus of mites commonly found in manure or compost, or attached to insects as phoretic deuteronymphs. The subgenus Phaulodinychus, sometimes treated as a distinct genus, contains species inhabiting wrack on the seashore and possesses an ambulacra on the first leg tarsus; this ambulacra is absent in Uropoda sensu stricto. The seashore species Uropoda mitis is believed to respire via the plastron during regular periods when it is submerged by the tide (Lindquist et al. 2009). In forms sometimes treated as a distinct genus Cilliba, the marginal shield is posteriorly continuous whereas other species have it absent or fragmented towards the rear (Evans & Till 1979).

Characters (from Evans & Till 1979): Marginal shield absent posteriorly; genital shield of female produced into acute spine; levator tendon of movable digit of chelicera lacking a sclerotised node; palptibia and tarsus distinct, palpfemur with four setae; coxae I flattened, enlarged, concealing the tritosternum; legs I without ambulacra

Uropodoidea

Dinychus sp., copyright Scott Justis.

Belongs within: Uropodina.
Contains: Oplitis, Trachyuropoda, Nenteria, Uroobovella, Trichouropoda, Uropoda, Discourella, Trichocylliba.

The Uropodoidea are a diverse group of mites found in soil, humus, animal nests or decaying organic matter. Species may feed on fungi or organic debris or they may be predators on other small animals such as nematodes or insect larvae (Lindquist et al. 2009). Their classification has been somewhat chaotic in the past, largely due to debate on how much systematic weight should be allowed to characters that may not be expressed at all stages of the life cycle. In species of the family Uroactiniidae, the apex of the fixed cheliceral digit bears a large flower- or mushroom-shaped sensory organ and there are terminal teeth on the corniculi. A distinct internal sclerotised node is associated with the levator tendon of the chelicera in species of Trematuridae, Dinychidae, Trachyuropodidae and Oplitidae but not in Metagynella and Uropodidae. In Metagynella the hypostomatic setae h1 are short and spiniform, and the female genital shield is located behind coxae IV; Uropodidae usually have long and setiform setae h1 and the female genital shield is between coxae II–IV. Dinychidae, Trachyuropodidae and Oplitidae possess short marginal fimbriations and/or moustache-like distal excrescences on the internal malae that are absent in Trematuridae. In Dinychidae, the peritremes are well developed, often forming distinctive serpentine patterns, and the fixed cheliceral digit usually bears an apical 'finger' extending well past the movable digit (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Lindquist et al. 2009): Coxae I broad, covering or partially covering narrow tritosternal base, vertex and camerostome well developed, pedofossae often present; palpgenu with 4–5 setae. Dorsal shield of adults smooth or variously ornamented, sometimes with deep pits and ridges, entire or with a posterior pygidial element, free or contiguous with holoventral shield, fused anteriorly to peritrematic elements and often bordered by marginal scutella or coalesced marginal shields; pygidial shield, when present, may be narrow to broad, sometimes subdivided, with or without setae. Chelicerae elongate, sometimes appearing four-segmented, without lyrifissure, terminal digits usually small and often bearing elaborate sensory structures, pilus dentilis present or absent, levator tendon with or without a sclerotized node. Peritremes well developed and often convoluted or serpentine, tritosternal laciniae fused basally and often subdivided distally. Femur I with 8–9 setae, genua III–IV without (or occasionally with 1) ventral setae, tibia I with only 3 dorsal and 2 ventral setae (typically 1 1/1, 2/1 1). Female genital opening covered by a single nude epigynal shield, paraanal elements absent. Male with holoventral shield, genital opening between coxae II–IV (rarely postcoxal), covered by 1–2 valves; protonymph with separate or fused podonotal and mesonotal elements; phoretic deutonymphs may attach to host via strand produced by anal pedicel.
