Glycyphagidae

Glycyphagus sp., copyright Daktaridudu.

Belongs within: Astigmatina.

The Glycyphagidae are a diverse group of mites mostly associated with the nests of small mammals, mostly characterised by the presence of a series of external ridges on the venter of the subcapitulum (OConnor 2009).

Characters (from OConnor 2009): Ventral subcapitulum with prominent pattern of external transverse and oblique ridges (ridges reduced in heavily sclerotised Fusacarus); palpi reflexed inwards; empodial claws small or absent; condylophores very thin or absent; female usually with epigynal apodeme and often with external copulatory tube, oviporus longitudinal with genital valves fused to body anteriorly, free posteriorly; male without paranal suckers or modified setae on tarsus IV. Deutonymph with attachment organ with setae p1–p2 in the form of ribbed claspers, or if absent, then vestiges of their alveoli present as small sclerotised rings (Baloghella), or attachment organ reduced and tibiae III–IV with large ventral, comblike setae; coxal setae 3a and 4a absent; posterior coxal apodemes with distinct edges.

Histiostomatidae

Deutonymph of Myianoetus, copyright Olivier9099.

Belongs within: Astigmatina.
Contains: Histiostoma.

The Histiostomatidae are a group of astigmatan mites found on wet substrates, most commonly feeding by filtering organic particles and microorganisms from the water film. Most species are associated with isolated or ephemeral habitats and some may have the shortest development times of any astigmatan mites, going through their entire life cycle in as little as six days (OConnor 2009).

Characters (from OConnor 2009): Adult with body not dorsoventrally flattened; chelicerae laterally compressed, often attenuate, usually with numerous finely divided teeth, nonchelate; palpi with terminal solenidion and usually at least one elongate eupathidial seta, normal setae strongly reduced, usually reflexed outward; genital papillae ring-like, usually not directly associated with the genital opening; female genital valves fused to body posteriorly, open anteriorly forming a transverse oviporus. Deutonymph with Legs III–IV with femur-genu-tibia-tarsus partially or completely fused; legs III–IV flexed at trochanter-femur articulation and directed anteriorly in repose; rostral and lamellar pairs of setae absent; setae 4b absent.

Rhizoglyphini

Bulb mites Rhizoglyphus robini, from here.

Belongs within: Rhizoglyphinae.
Contains: Schwiebea.

The Rhizoglyphini are a group of acarid mites characterised by the lack of seta aa on the first tarsus. Klimov (1998) divided this lineage into two tribes, Rhizoglyphini and Thyreophagini, based on the appearance of seta ba on the first two tarsi (stout and spine-like in 'Rhizoglyphini', weak and stick-like in 'Thyreophagini') but these divisions were not shown as reciprocally monophyletic by OConnor (2001).

Analgoidea

Female Trouessartia corvina, from Federmilben.de.

Belongs within: Psoroptidia.
Contains: Alloptidae, Avenzoariidae, Xolalgidae, Analgidae, Pteronyssidae, Proctophyllodidae, Sarcoptoidea, Pyroglyphidae.

The Analgoidea are a group of astigmatan mites usually found as parasites or paraphages of birds, more rarely as nidicoles or in synanthropic habitats (OConnor 2009). They are closely related to the mammal-associated Sarcoptoidea and may possibly be paraphyletic to the latter group.

Characters (from OConnor 2009): All tarsi lacking proral setae, tarsus IV lacking seta s; genu I with 0–2 solenidia; pretarsus with empodium claw-like in center of ambulacral disc or flattened as central sclerite; condylophore guide typically present at junction of ambulacral stalk and disc; pretarsus often retractable. Paraproctal chaetome with 0–3 pairs of p setae and no ad setae.

Psoroptidia

Male Freyanella tarandus, from OConnor (2009).

Belongs within: Astigmatina.
Contains: Eustathiidae, Freyanidae, Listrophoridae, Analgoidea, Pterolichidae.

The Psoroptidia are a group of astigmatan mites usually found as parasites or commensals on birds or mammals, most commonly in association with the feathers or hair. OConnor (2009) divided the Psoroptidia between three superfamilies, the bird-associated Pterolichoidea and Analgoidea, and the mammal-associated Sarcoptoidea but phylogenetic analysis by Dabert et al. (2010) indicates that the Pterolichoidea is paraphyletic to a clade containing the other two groups.

Characters (from OConnor 2009): Body cuticle usually at least partially striate: genital papillae greatly reduced or absent; tibiae Iand II with a dorsal solenidion and one (v') or rarely no ventral setae; unguinal serae absent from all tarsi; pretarsi often enlarged, with ambulacral stalk and disc well developed, empodial claws usually reduced or incorporated into ambulacral disc as central sclerite; deutonymph absent from life cycle.

Pyroglyphidae

House dust mites Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, from Time.

Belongs within: Analgoidea.

The Pyroglyphidae are a morphologically and ecologically diverse group of astigmatic mites including the house dust mites and related taxa. Members of the family vary from largely unsclerotised as in Dermatophagoides to almost completely sclerotised as in Pyroglyphus (OConnor 2009).

Characters (from OConnor 2009): Chelicerae well developed. Genu III with solenidion ς present; tibia IV with one ventral seta; tarsus I with solenidion ω1 inserted subapically, very near solenidion ω3; tarsus II with solenidion ω inserted in basal half of segment; pretarsi I and II with ambulacral stalks shorter than tarsi.

Poronoticae

Dorsal (left) and ventral views of Unduloribates hebes, from Norton & Behan-Pelletier (2009).

Belongs within: Brachypylina.
Contains: Oribatellidae, Anachipteria, Achipteria, Campachipteria, Tegoribatidae, Heterobelbidae, Tectocepheidae, Microtegeidae, Oripodoidea, Licneremaeoidea, Scapheremaeus, Eremaeozetoidea, Ameronothroidea, Galumnoidea, Ceratozetoidea, Phenopelopidae.

The Poronoticae are a group of oribatid mites possessing an octotaxic system, a series of glandular openings (most typically four pairs) on the notogaster in the form of porose areas or saccules. Monophyly of the group is uncertain; a number of taxa lacking the octotaxic system are otherwise similar in morphology to clearly poronotic species and it is probable that the octotaxic system has evolved more than once and/or been lost in some subgroups.

Members of the Poronoticae include the Achipterioidea, known from soil, litter, mosses and liverworts. Members of the Achipteriidae have characteristic spiral internal thickenings in the bothridium and a distinct long, thin, dorsally concave genu in leg IV (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Epactozetidae are a Neotropical family with large, auriculate pteromorphs and foveate patterning on the notogaster (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).
