Asking for Haiti: Sign the petition below to ask Haiti’s creditors to act quickly and cancel Haiti’s debts

Nothingandall associates to http://www.org.com petition

The harrowing images and stories coming out of Haiti are devastating to watch. Though I spend every day with the statistics and stories of extreme poverty, the scale of this tragedy is heartbreaking. Times like this remind me of our common humanity and the need to do all we can to help...

So here’s our goal as ONE: $890 million for Haiti. That’s how much Haiti owes to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and a handful of others.

Sign the petition below to ask Haiti’s creditors to act quickly and cancel Haiti’s debts:

http://one.org/international/actnow/haiti/o.pl?id=1395-3359230-w.sSW1x&t=4

Petition text:

Dear finance ministers, IMF, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and bilateral creditors: As Haiti rebuilds from this disaster, please work to secure the immediate cancellation of Haiti’s $890 million debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the forms of grants, not debt-incurring loans.

Haiti’s debt was largely accrued under the corrupt Duvalier regime, which borrowed money recklessly and spent it selfishly for 30 years. The new government has struggled with debt payments. And now, as the nation tries to recover from one of the worst disasters in recent years we can help by lifting this debt.

Thank you for doing your bit,

Roxane Philson, ONE.org

On December 20 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a landmark Resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease. The Resolution designates World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year starting in 2007.

The UN Resolution makes World Diabetes Day stronger than ever and provides the opportunity for a significant increase in the visibility of the campaign and an increase in government and media participation on or around November 14. The Resolution will ensure even greater reach for awareness-raising activities throughout the diabetes world.

World Diabetes Day on November 14th, offers the opportunity to take a look at the disease that's become the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. However, the good news is that millions and millions of people live and thrive with diabetes.

Oct. 16 - World Food Day

«World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy»

The World Food Day (WFD) was established by FAO's Member Countries at the Organization's Twentieth General Conference in November 1979. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on 16 October, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945. This is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed, year-around action to alleviate hunger.

High food prices put World Food Day 2008 in the spotlight. The cost of food is climbing. people everywhere is affected and the poorest are hit hardest. Changing weather patterns and rising demand for biofuels are part of the problem. The theme for World Food Day 2008 is «World Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy»

World Food Day provides an occasion to once again highlight the plight of 923 million undernourished people in the world. Most of them live in rural areas where their main source of income is the agricultural sector. Global warming and the biofuel boom are now threatening to push the number of hungry even higher in the decades to come.
