Lone Star Mini Quilt: Part 2

Dies used: Diamonds, 2 1/2in (2 3/4in x 6 1/2in Unfinished)
                 Half-Square Triangles, 2 1/2in Finished Square

Hello again!

The Lone Star mini quilt I've been making with diamonds and half-square triangles is progressing nicely. Picking up from last time, the next stage was to make 8 large half-square triangles with each star point and 3 background sections and then to join them in pairs to give 4 squares.

And then the squares were sewn together to give one large square mini quilt top.

Then it was time to start quilting. I drew out a geometric design on the lone star with water erasable pen and once it was completed I looked at the swirl effect created by the fabric in the centre of the star and decided that instead of the pattern I'd marked out, a spiral would be much better! So the pen lines were blotted out and the centre of a spiral drawn out instead.

To help the star stand out from the background only the star was quilted with the spiral and so once it got to the white background I stopped quilting a continual coil and instead did each of the star points one at a time working from side to side. Each of the background sections were quilted with straight lines to contrast with the curves on the star.

Progress has stalled now as I can't decide on a binding fabric but hopefully a decision will be made and it will be finished and hanging on the wall in time for my next post.

Happy sewing, see you next time!

Works In Progress: Baby Quilt & Table Runner

Dies used: Hexagons, 1 1/4in Sides
Hexagons, 1in Sides #2 (for the papers)

                 Drunkard's Path Quarter Circle
                 Drunkard's Path & Fan Background

We're back home again now after our family holiday to the Isle of Wight. The days were packed with visits to castles, beaches, Roman villas, boat trips, dinosaur attractions and more but the evenings were much more relaxed with plenty of time for some English paper piecing. The box I took to hold my basted hexagons filled up nicely over the course of the week.

Still going to need quite a few more though to make a 6ft+ festive table runner!

Returning home again meant getting back to the deadlines and trying to get back on top of the to-do list. One of my close friends is due to give birth in the next few weeks and I want to make a little quilt for the new baby's arrival. Whilst there isn't quite the same pressure as a work deadline, time is running out quickly and so it was time to get on with it!

I've been wanting to use my Drunkard's Path dies for a while to have a go at a circles design and this seemed like the perfect project. I decided to make 4 circles using some printed children's fabric and see how it went. Having spent years sewing toys full of tricky curves as a result I don't really mind sewing curves and found that the quarter circles and background pieces went together really nicely. With the finished circle being quite large at 7in diameter, the curve isn't too tight and didn't feel awkward to manage instead it felt quite comfortable to sew.

I think 4 circles by 4 circles will work out at a good baby quilt size and so the top is almost a quarter complete already. Oh and if you haven't guessed, it's a boy!

To make the children's prints stand out more it might be good to add a few circles made with basic blender prints, or add another background fabric, hmm. Some more playing about with fabric is needed I think!

See you next time and happy sewing!

Mini Album Snowy Holidays by Karine

Mini Album Snowy Holidays

Hello!

Let me show you today my latest wintery album! This “frosty” mini album isn’t that small after all since its size is 20x20cm. Your prettiest pictures from your holidays in the mountains will perfectly fit in this album.

Supply list:

Vacances à la neigekit
Cardstock: American Crafts
Papers: Studio Calico, 4heures37
Alphabets: Pink Paisley
Wood Embellishments: Studio Calico
Stickers: 4heures37
Sequins: Ephéméria

Dies:

658300 : Sizzix Big Shot Starter Kit
658778 : Sizzix Texture Fades Embossing Folders 2PK-birch-trees-candy-stripes-set
660040 : Sizzix Bigz Die with Textured Fades-Layered Snowflakes

I am very proud of this mini album! It contains my favorite pictures at present and I love its color combo and its 1001 details!

For the first page I had fun cutting an XXL pretty snowflake out of Kraft cardstock!
It is glued with 3D adhesive and in its center I inserted a wood accent (glued in 3D), a small piece of ribbon and silver sequins. This pretty snowflake is self-sufficient and is a good way to let know what awaits you after this page!

To stick to the Nature atmosphere, I embossed a white cardstock with a “branches” folder. As for embellishments, I embossed some stamped patterns and added splashes with watercolor to bring some more softness to the whole…

Here are some pictures of this wintery album…

See you in a few!

Karine

Hello Card

Hello! It's Anna here to share some ideas using Sizzix products.
Today I'm showing you a quick and easy card for days when you have 1 less hour in your day ;)
How did we ever scrapbook before the Big Shot??? :D

sizzix big shot - hello card - embossing - by Anna Drai - cafecreativo (1)

To start this card I cut a card base out of yellow cardstock. I then cut a slightly smaller piece of white card. I embossed this piece with the Textured Impressions Embossing Folders - Numbers.

sizzix big shot - hello card - embossing - by Anna Drai - cafecreativo (2)

The 'hello' die comes in the Sizzix 'You and Me' die set. I used other dies that come in the Thinlits - Hello Life for arrow, and cut the tag with a Tim Holtz die.
I like to add adhesive 3-D foam dots for an interesting pop-up effect.
Well, I hope you enjoyed it!
Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

Items used:
cardstocks (yellow, white, kraft, red)
scrap of patterned papers
wood veneer embellishments
bakery twine red and white
stapler and staples

Per le amiche italiane! :)

Hexagon Holly

I've been experimenting with hexagons lately to see if I can get them to look like holly leaves. At first I was going to join some hexies together to form a ring and make a stylised wreath with them but decided to play around a bit more and see what happened.

Using the Big Shot, I cut some papers with the Hexagons, 3/4in Sides die and then, using some green scraps, cut the fabric with the Hexagons, 1in Sides die.

I basted and pressed 10-15 hexagons and then popped out the papers. Next each one was folded in half with the fold running corner to corner and pressed with the iron. I sewed a line along the fold, just in from the edge, starting just after the basted hem and finishing just before the one on the other side.

Lastly each hexagon was opened up and pressed flat.
I chose some white Essex linen to use as a neutral background and drew an approximately 5in diameter circle on it using a water erasable pen and then pinned the hexy holly leaves around it.

The leaves have been positioned in pairs and the plan is to add a little red berry between each pair and a few other details. I'm now midway through sewing the leaves in place and so far I'm pretty pleased with how it's turning out. I'll finish it off this week and hopefully it will go to plan and look like a holly wreath and if not, well I've had fun messing around!

Quick Scandi Christmas block

How are you - I hope you're enjoying the build up to Christmas and that you have a lot more fun and enjoyment than stress.
Last year I thought it would be nice to start a family tradition - a quilt for Christmas eve - when the grandchildren can snuggle up under the quilt, in their Christmas pyjamas, and  enjoy watching a film together.
So we are only 6 weeks away from Christmas and I'm just starting the blocks for the quilt! Well that is progress, and even though I might not get it finished for this Christmas, I am moving in the right direction.
So I have chosen these lovely Scandi style fabrics, and plan to keep the design quite simple -

I just love these colours and designs.
I have used the following dies for my star block -
1 square in red with white stars.
With the Big Shot and die 657520 http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/657520/sizzix-bigz-l-die-half-square-triangles-5-finished-square , and red with cream heart outlines, I cut
 8 half-square triangles.
 4 x 4 1/2" squares.
To begin I stitched 2 half square triangles to each side of the quarter square triangle -
and then I stitched these to opposite sides of the 8 1/2" square -

and then I joined the 41/2" squares to each end of two of  the pieced triangles -
To complete the block these were stitched to  opposite sides of the centre square -
So that is my quick make for Christmas - it is a 16" finished block - so it could be a cushion or a table centre. I am still hoping that I can make a quilt for Christmas - and so I plan to use the same design for all of the quilt blocks, and mix and match the various fabrics I have from the range.
Will it be finished for this Christmas? - I have no idea, but, for the first time ever, I have the beginnings of a quilt for Christmas - I feel quite warm and cosy inside!
That's all for now - have fun.
Angela

Hexagon Cushion

When I began making the hexagons last week the main aim was just to have a go at English paper piecing and see how it went, but with the idea of making the 'Let It Snow' cushion from Issue 14 of Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine if it went well. I used smaller hexagons (Hexagons, 1in Sides #2 die for the fabric and Hexagons, 3/4in Sides die for the papers) than those used for the cushion in the magazine but it didn't affect the overall design, it just meant making more.

All but of a handful of the hexies I made (approximately 80) were joined together to form a circular-ish piece which then became the feature-piece on the front of the cushion.

I don't like having raw edges anywhere if possible, even on the inside of a cushion cover so opted to bind the edges. I used the same white Essex linen for the binding as for the main part of the cushion so that the hexies would stand out and be the main focus.

I really enjoyed piecing the hexagons for this and might try something a bit bigger next time.

Owl sweet Owl

Hello everyone! Anna here to share some fun owls with you using the Sizzix Owl Bag Bigz XL Die by Lori Whitlock.
I’ll be showing a cute owl gift basket. It's a really cute bag and I think this would look great in a Halloween theme or Christmas too.

cafe creativo - big shot sizzix - owl - gufo set cucito (1)

Since the die cut out more materials, I wanted to try use felt to create a sewing kit. A simple little stitching project for a beginner stitcher, or gift for a beginner!

Per le amiche italiane! :)

Ciao a tutti!
