Jumbo and Tattered Florals for Home Decor projects

One of the most popular Sizzix dies has to be Tattered Florals. They are fantastic as there are four flowers in different sizes and shapes and being a Bigz die means that versatility is warrantied. Loads of us crafters cheered when Tim Holtz released the Jumbo Tattered Florals.
I adore flowers, layering them, using them in different sizes and making them 3D.  That is why I was really looking forward to the opportunity to use the original Tattered Florals and the Jumbo ones.

There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to assemble the Tattered Florals, but here is a quick reminder.

I die cut four large flowers. Then I made some cuts (clockwise): On one made just a cut, on the second I cut a petal off, on the third one I cut two petals off and finally on the fourth flower I cut three petals or cut in half.
Then I glued each end petals to each other and shaped the ends of the flowers using the Susan's Garden Tool Kit.

To assemble the layers I started with the centre (but you may want to start with the larger layer) rolling up the single petal and then added the other layers of petals. Trim the bottom ends of the flowers to be able to layer the petals closely together. To glue the layers, I used a cold melt glue gun. Quick and strong hold.

I repeat the same process with the largest flower from the original Tattered Florals. And the final results on the right hand side. Top is the Jumbo one and bottom the original Florals, quite a big difference is size.

I did the same with the rest of the flowers in both the Tattered Florals and the Jumbo ones.

All in all, six fine 3D flowers. I attached them to this nice wooden coat hanger, added the leaves using the Jumbo Florals I finished the decorating by adding a die cut Frameworks Courtyard.

Tag team

I made some tags for the excellent Dutch magazine HobbyHandig  this week and I had forgotten what a fun format it is to work in. The large Movers & Shapers Tag & Bookplates by Tim Holtz is about 8 x16cm and the restricted size seems to stretch your creativity which is no bad thing if you ask me, and let's face it, Tim doesn't seem to struggle does he?

I thought I would play around with a few inks and acrylics on the bookplates which come with this most excellent die. I had so much fun that I may turn this into a mini-series so look out for 'Return of the Tag'.

This die is a Bigz L which means it cuts super thick materials like the mount board I have used today. It's a great investment and something you will return to time and again.

I started by die cutting the bookplate from a scrap of old mount board and painting it with gesso which for those of you who don't know is a super thick paint used to prime art canvases, it's also great for creating a variety of textured effects.

Once I had applied a nice thick layer I dabbed it with my brush to add random texture, I'm going for the flaky plaster look. Once the gesso is dry, (you can use a heat tool to speed this up) I painted a thin layer of  pale blue acrylic onto the surface before removing most of it with some cotton wool. This will give you a lovely subtle distressed look.

Next, I die cut two sizes of flower and a couple of leaves using the Tattered Garland Decorative Strip Die by Tim Holtz to create a couple of 3D roses. I didn't post the step by step instructions for this as I covered this a few months back (New Blooms part 1, January 8th) using the Tattered Florals flowers, obviously this is done on a much smaller scale.

I then added a layer of the gesso don't worry if it is a bit gloopy, it all adds to the effect. once the gesso was dry I applied the pale blue paint using a dry brush effect. I used the same techniques to distress an angel made from resin which is part of a set from those clever people at Prima Marketing

It's time to cut my tags, I cut one with a subtle damask pattern and one from wood grain paper both from My Mind's Eye collections. I trimmed away part of the base of the damask tag and applied distress inks to the edges of both in a very subtle fashion. Next, I used a paper distressing tool to rough up the edges of the damask tag a little and scrunched up the bottom. I'm going for a tattered, peeling wallpaper look! Finally, I attached the two tags together.

And here is the finished Tag, the bookplate has a piece of inked card behind it with a couple of word stickers from the Chitchat idea-ology pad by Tim Holtz added. I mounted the bookplate with a length of pale blue organza ribbon before attaching the matching cherub and roses. Finally, I threaded some stained lace and organza ribbon through the hole at the top of the tag.

I hope you can tell from the photo but the resemblance to plaster is quite uncanny, Maybe we'll go for rusty metal next week?

I also used 4 different colours paint (sprays!).
Once the flowers were dry I used a heat tool to wrinkle the petals.
N.B. It takes only a second to heat in the middle so the petals will pop up.

Victoria's Secret!

The Victoria in the title was named by our very own Becky Wiseman (who is a pretty handy crafter herself!) I used this bust for an exhibition a couple of years ago and I've been looking for an excuse to use it again.

Last year at our trade show in Birmingham I bumped into Brit Wellens, an old friend who is now the UK distributor for Powertex which, amongst other things, manufacture fabric hardener for the craft industry to create beautiful statues and other such mini masterpieces( click on the link to see all the cool ideas!). She very kindly showed me around her stand and I was immediately smitten with the products and their potential.

When I was trying to come up with a design concept for the Tim Holtz display areas at our winter trade shows there was a metaphorical alignment of the stars and I found my excuse to use Victoria, Powertex and Tim's dies together.

The dies used are the Bigz XL Jumbo Tattered Florals which is already proving very popular on both sides of the Atlantic and the Bigz Die - Garden Greens also By Tim Holtz. I started by painting the bust before soaking the Stockinette fabric using the Terracotta Powertex for both steps. After draping the fabric I left it to dry until it was rock solid. Next I attached the various flowers and leaves die cut from stiff kraft card which had also been painted with Powertex. To find out more about creating the 3D flowers check out my last two 'New Blooms' blog posts.

Finally, I dry brushed the whole creation using acrylic paint and Hey Presto!!

It is on it's way to Frankfurt as we speak, I will be away for a week doing my demonstration thing! see you all when I return, so until then auf wiedersehen!
