THE GOLDEN THROWN - Majestick,Rejected

My pal ,Tony Rizzo,co-founder of Cat Machine,and member of many Sluggisha bands,with his latest project! I'll let him elaborate further!

Picking up where The Phantom Third left off, we find Tony Rizzo (founding member of The Mighty Cat Machine, and veteran of countless Sluggisha bands) in Chicago, where he answers an ad for a band to share the bill at a local bar, and gets selected based on the decade old demos of TP3.
  Hustling to get a band together, he recruits co-workers Alex Insco and Jason Sneed, on drums and bass respectively. Crash course in learning a sets' worth of songs. 
   After that one gig, the rhythm section decided it wasn't their cup of tea...despite the fact that other gigs were on the horizon. SO, he brought in Jamie Kallend (who could often be spotted outside of gigs, scouring the gutter for cigarette butts) on bass, and Jason Dolan took over the drum stool. (having never really played in a BAND, before)
   On the eve of a gig set to open for Mugen Hoso, from Tokyo, Jamie says he has class, and we should just not take the gig, if we can't all be there. Tony and Jason say to hell with that nonsense, and played the show as a POWERDUO, and stayed that way, playing several shows in and around Chicago, til Jason moved to New Mexico.
   TGT became totally cohesive, and after one failed attempt at recruiting a bassist (he played well, but annoyed the HELL out of them), never looked back. Sadly, the best recordings they had are trapped on an mp3 player that refuses to respond to, or recognize ANY computer. Also, the display on it got jacked up, so hard to even pinpoint where the best material is.
   Known to cover REM (mainly Monster-era deep cuts), Adam & the Ants,Stooges, and AC/DC (once had a full bar crowd shouting the OI! OI! OI! part on 'TNT'!!!)
 Also culled tracks from several Sluggisha acts, like Myopia, OrangeClawHammer, and Boneshaker.
   Always recorded live, whether to cassette, phone, or MP3--The Golden Thrown were loose, loud, raw and ROCK. or, as Tony dubbed it: dirtypopartpunkfuzzrock

SLUGGISHA #1000 - THE 1000TH BLOG POST!!!!!

This is the 1000th post on this blog! Sluggisha Tapes started as an afterthought ,in 1990. There were local Ft. Myers ,FL bands in the mid to late 80's ,that started the Sluggisha asthetic.When Cat Machine ,and before them ,Myopia ,began their reign of underground terror ,the decision was made to start a mail order cassette label. We ("we" being myself,Joel and Tony Rizzo,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile ,Chipmonk,and others from our contingent) ,were recording so much ,and had so many spin-off bands going on all the time ,that we knew people had to hear it!The orders slowly trickled in (I met Food Fortunata around this point(a friend to this day) ,(who was doing the same thing as us),thru mail ordering cassettes from his vast catalog,and then I realized there were others like us,many,many,others!) ,I ran ads in Maximum Rock 'N Roll and Flipside ,and we flyered the town ,each time we had a gig.Cat Machine only played out live twice ,neither time were we recorded.Myopia played a whole mess of gigs ,and later One Fell Swoop had a residency as the house band (we broke open downtown ,for all the bands that followed) ,at The Draft House ,on Dean St. Even further down the road ,Sexboy took up residence there,and brought lots of out of town bands in to play with them.We had Salad Days (later to become reborn as The Indigo Room) ,and The Main St. Coffee House ,and Samskull moved his store ,Offbeat Records ,to the Patio DeLeon! We had local zines ,Rodent Cake ,Psychotic Episode ,Mad Asshole Digest ,and tons more ,many of which are ,or will eventually be ,posted at my other blog , Mediachrist.blogspot.com .We were young ,and drunk ,and having fun.Eventually in the late 90's ,I had to move away ,and the scene crumbled away.A few years ago ,I started the blog ,because I knew all my bandmates would wanna hear the old stuff ,and I was the only one who had the tapes ,so I began to chronicle our days as the kings of the underground scene ,in our small ,shitty ,town.This compilation has many unreleased tracks,live tracks,demos,unreleased ,and soon to be released ,and/or posted. There are 122 bands/songs ,almost 6 hours of fun! I unfortunately could not include every single band or artist on the label ,but I did a good job I think ,along with suggestions from friends and followers. This goes out to Gary and Rick at the Draft House , Cindy at The Coffee House ,Ralph at the Record Trader ,and all the fans and friends and bands ,and all the people we lost to death,jail,marriage,and long distance moves. We started out in the old days ,now everything is on the web ,these kids today got it easy ! Three zips in one file ,spans rock n roll ,punk , diy,alt-rock,indie,tardcore ,noise ,and just good 'ol music .The first pic above was the original logo ,as drawn by Steve Reed (I added the Sluggisha Presents ,and #1000). A practice for a gig at Norma Jean's that never materialized . Most of the set list is run thru ,along with an all new song ,"Letter To Partiers" ,which was lyrically derived from a letter found on Tony's apartment door. Crazy Mary is interuppted by another nosy neighbor,and Golden Earring gets covered.Recorde at Ren and Stimpy's apartment on 9/2/1991 ,20 years ago today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ATTENTION!!ATTENTION!!

CAT MACHINE - Pathetic Jonesing

Yes ,that's Sluggisha the Cat,in his Elvis get-up,in downtown Ft. Myers ,because this is when Cat Machine ,"left the building" ,so to speak.This is the 50th recording made by this under-appreciated,underground,outsider,cult-band,and it was to be their last ,at least of this era. 9 perfect studio recordings from Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy.Recorded July 13,1991 ,20 years ago,yesterday. There is a rehearal tape from Sept 2,1991 (which I will post on that date!) ,for a gig at the old rock club ,"Norma's" ,at which an A & R person, was coming to observe us,both of which never materialized,which spelled the end of Cat Machine.Ed ,Tony, and Joel ,reformed later as the "Projek Pimps" for one tape,and there is also ,"Litterbox" ,the greatest hits comp, and "The Last Newest One " ,where Vance replaces Chipmonk,and also the phenomenal 10 disc cross-section of every tape posted ,"The Mystery,The History,And Shit" ,all of which can be found on this here blog ,as well as,(now), the whole catalog of their year-long journey into indie-band cassette-label territory!

Since this is the end of this series,and because of the importance of this band to the Ft. Myers,FL underground scene ,I am compiling covers of Cat Machine songs,as played by other artists! There's only one more studio tape,and one rehearsal tape after this masterpiece of underground,cult-band madness! This recording had Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy on it from 6/23/1991. As with most of these 4-track recordings,all the songs here are top-notch! With a Ventures/Stooges mash-up ,before there ever was that sort of thing,plus each member gets to play a second or two of the guitar solo! The mug shot of Tony ,represents where he was for the previous few tapes,and the title also tells the tale!Here's the track list!

June 1st,1991 ,at Cat Machine house.Ed J.,Joel Rizzo,Chipmonk,and Billy Drake.Since Tony was put away for a little while,the first tune on here is,"Tony Takes A Nap",which mostly concerns skateboarding.There are a couple more jammin' songs,and then the last 2 tracks are audio verite,or musique concrete,if you will."Gene Simmons' Codpiece" ,is a lengthy jaunt thru overlayed samples and tv,and music,while "Linda Blair In Jail",is a nasty number with Exorcist samples,that will have you laffin' it up!Listen in the backround to the funny comments by band members! 4-track studio recordings!

CAT MACHINE - Power Trio

Around this time ,in Cat Machine's history,Tony and Myopia had just finished up their string of gigs at Visions,and Tony was in the pokey for a month or two.So Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk ,carried on as usual ,this is live to boombox,with great sound! Once again,as with "New Thing" ,a few tapes back ,this is kinda the germination of the splinter band ,One Fell Swoop.New versions of ,"Peddler of Pencils" (2x) ,"Land Of Faraway" ,and "Slim Jim Blues" ,as well as a bunch of awe-inspiring experimental stuff,that will blow your doors off!There's only about a half dozen tapes left in this series! All 4-track studio stuff,(with the noticibly missing Tony,on about half of the tapes)except the last tape,which is a rehearsal for a gig that fell thru, at Serena's ,a shitty rock club in shitty Cape Coral. So stay tuned for the rest of this tape series,scattered thru the next coupla months,sporadically,posting on the original release dates,20 years to the date! This was recorded on May 28th,1991.

CAT MACHINE - Dude! ,That's Penis! a/k/a Live At Gramps's -May 1991

A short rehearsal of 4 tunes,(each member sings one) , opening for Myopia ,on this tape,(Myopia's set is here: http://sluggisha.blogspot.com/2008/11/m-y-o-p-i.html ),as well as live.One of the few tapes with a real drum set,as we usually resorted to drum machines,and other more primitive percussion. I don't know if I ever went into the meaning of the title, so,here goes: Ashey moved between Massachussetts and Florida a few times.Once ,upon his return,he was using the phrase ,"Dude! ,that's penis!" ,which he said meant ,"cool" ,up in MA. We just rolled about,and laughed,and used it for a tape title,which was the usual progression of a catchphrase,at least in Cat Machine's world.

CAT MACHINE - Fag Bar -Rehearsals For Visions Gig -May 1991

A full rehearsal of the entire set list ,give or take a coupla numbers.All 4 boys,Ed,Joel,Tony,and Chipmonk ,are in prime form,on this practice session.Only one gig at Visions,and we were done with that establishment,as the owners said we were too loud.As the title reveals,we played at a gay bar,on their grand opening ,in fact.No live tapes from gigs have ever surfaced,so this is as live as it gets,along with the other rehearsal tapes.Of course Cat Machine opened for the great Myopia,who was Tony,Billy and Shane.Myopia played a small string of dates,at Visions.

CAT MACHINE - Cat Haus (Rehearsal For SW Florida Juvenile Detention Center -5/4/1991

Joel & Tony's dad is a preacher.He got us our first gig ever,at the juvenile detention center in east Ft Myers,Florida(pictured above!). We played for a room full of around 25 or so,a couple of kids loved us,but the most of the racially diverse youth there,despised us.We were loud ,obnoxious,annoying,yeah,you get it,we were being ourselves,Cat Machine! This is a practice session for that gig.Only a handful of songs here,we did a full set at the center.It was a blast!Too bad we have no audio or video of the show,now that would be priceless!Bonus track at end is filled with riffs,and chatter amongst the band and others!

CAT MACHINE - Teen-age Pez-head Punk Rock Spies

One of the most cohesive studio efforts,by the most under-rated,undiscovered,underground,outsider ,cult-bands of all time.Recorded on 4/2/1991,with Ed,Tony,Joel,and Chipmonk,this one has the hits!!Their 39th release ,features the college rock radio hit ,"When The Ape Man Smiles", which ,thru Chipmonk's contacts,managed to garner an audience,when it was played on several college campus radio stations,across the nation,most notably in Wisconsin.Other great compositions here ,include ,"All In The Family" , "Alcoholic Funk" ,and "Backstab" ,all sung by Joel. Chipmonk vocalizes on ,"Lunchbox Sabotage",and "Fly High Flyers" ,while Ed yells on ,"Spontaneously Combusting" , "My Mom's A Facist" and "The Things To Come.And Tony ,besides singing lead on "Ape Man" also kicks in with his crooning on "Gettin' Bent (Big Dead Ass).This is seriously really good! If you haven't heard anything from this year-long series yet ,I would suggest you might start here.This really shows their true talent of getting wasted,and banging out world class punk songs! The title was later appropriated by Sexboy ,for a song title .

CAT MACHINE - Slop Maintenance

Release # 38 from the greatest undiscovered,underground,outsider,cult-band,from Ft. Myers,FL , 3/30/1991.Ed,Joel,and Chipmonk,are here ,in full force,and Tony showed up for a few songs.One of their finest moments is here("Who Threw The Glass In The Street?"),based on a movie script ,from a Bob Dylan film.10 tunes,recorded in the 4-track studio.The quantity of songs is lower,the quality higher!This was a fertile creative period for the band,owing much to the recording techniques. The picture above,was stuck on the old Flying-V ,on the back,came from a trash can,and reminded me of Mel (Mel's Diner)from the TV show ,"Alice".

Some really good stuff from those underground,outsider,cult-band boys,from the brain boiling heat of Ft. Number 33 release from this prolific,underground ,cult-band of outsiders! Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk,and Billy,let it rip ,once again!Lots of great songs,and funny little skits,that last as long as this sentence.I won't even mention the songs on here,they're all fabulous!Very experimental ,in parts,and punk-rockin' in other sections!I don't remember how we titled it,AC-DC has nothing to do with it,tho' ,"The Nuge" is mentioned briefly!You just can't find a more interesting band,a true desert island sort of group! 3/12/1991

CAT MACHINE - Maggotty Pork Head Set

Bizarre song titles abound!Downright cryptic words!Music played by suburban waste-oids!The core of four (Ed,Tony,Joel,Chipmonk),on 3/5/1991,jammed this into a "suburb",(as opposed to "ghetto") blaster,(boombox) ,1,2,3,4! style,at the Cat Machine house.Re-workings of several hits ,including,:"Trinkets Of Cloud" ,"Moon Over Mannequins" ,and "Rainbow Shower".Chipmonk does a hee-larious "rap" on ,"Weasel Dick",about slow Don.And he waxes poetic about Hogan's Heroes on ,"Commander Of Swine".There's mucho weirdness floating around in this skeleton galaxy.Here's some of the stranger song titles,"We're Saved Ah-Hah","Hand-See","Twicker Pated","B.M.R.C.","Darn-104-Bloot Huh","Tender Sharples",amongst others.A heart-warming collection of songs that will probably be sung around campfires,on space-scout troop camp-outs,in the future!Their 31st album,released 20 years ago,today! CAT MACHINE -Wrong Drug Right Time

There are a few true -story songs on here,most notably,"Paul Kline" ,and a song tied in with his ordeal ,"Baker Act".Paul was a school chum of mine,who killed a few people,after graduating high school.Weird titles and tunes abound ,such as:"Sok On A Fork"(a re-make of a tune from "Unplugged"),"Pathological Intoxication" ,"Wide Spectre" ,"Sniff The Clipper" ,"Violins Fucking Horns","Blowing Up Beatlemania","Sleeping In The Ashtray",and more! Chipmonk kicks in some of his weirdo lyrics on ,"I Had Lunch With Hitler's Cronies","Goat Ate The Payroll",and "Me And My 7 Foot Self" ,amongst others."100 Flowers Rule",shows our love for that group,and "Methadone Grease Spot",is a sonic guitar instrumental.Lots of oddness going on here,a truly underground,outsider,cult-band,these guys are.Their,(incredibly!) 30th release!!Just the core foursome here ,on 3/2/1991.
