W.G.O.D. 50 - May 21st ,1997

17 years ago i made this W.G.O.D.  G O Dcast. Tape number 50 was elusive in it's appearance.when i got to number 49 ,I wanted to wait for number 50 ,for a special occasion which never really surfaced.I even had a friend (Ron Bohn in Atlanta,Georgia ,ex-patriate of the Ft. Myers scene) name his band ,"GOD50" .which was an honor ,but 49 carried on thru fractions and decimals (ie: 49 and 16/17ths ,49 and 17/18ths or 49.25,49.26,49.27 ..etc. and so on) until I met the girl who was to become my wife. I decided to then do W.G.O.D. 50  because i felt a change in my life about to happen, and figured it was as good of an occasion as any to let loose on number 50! Since the broadcast is from 1997 ,I play stuff that was current at that time, usually reflected in my recent purchases.I throw in some classics and oldies for good measure ,and there is the obligatory SLUGGISHA artists set ,and those great bits by Doug Shannon. This goes out to my wife,Annette ,Doug Shannon,Ralph Tarantino,Vance Burdge,Jay Counce,Mike Brophy,Joel Rizzo,Tony Rizzo,Chris Parfitt ,Jake Joyce ,Joe Willa ,John Keane ,Bob Suren ,Ashey MacDonald ,Jeff McDonald ,Rich Deckard, and John Marion. And anyone i forgot ,and those who just enjoy my podcasts. Thanks for your support!

SLUGGISHA:200 DISASTERS LATER! (SL200)

Way back in the early 90's ,when Sluggisha was still an underground ,mail-order cassette label, this was the 200th release in the catalog.Featuring some of the best bands and/or songs ,up to that point, plus some of the latest stuff being recorded by local Ft.Myers,FL bands. As you can see from the cover art ,above, there were also bands from other areas of the United States, who were sending in tapes to be sold thru Sluggisha's distribution system. The songs that appear here were some of the most requested during gigs ,or on the underground ,pirate radio show on W.G.O.D. Many styles and types of music are featured ,which all fall under the punk umbrella. The catalog could be had thru ads in zines like Flipside,MRR,Rodent Cake ,and more obscure rags. The people who were lucky enough to have ordered cassettes from the catalog back then, were astounded by the revelation of real underground music, coming out of the deep south,as well as from our compatriots across the U.S. Yeah, some of the recordings are shit, but the bands worked with what they had, which in many cases ,was not very much. The Ft. Myers scene ,was very incestuous, with bands switching members ,and forming new bands ,constantly.Unfortunately many great bands never made recordings,or even if they played live gigs, they were sparsley attended. The earlier compilation,"The Ft. Myers Underground",featured pre-Sluggisha bands (mid-to-late 80's) ,with many people who continued to carry the torch into the 90's and beyond.A handful of the original scene is still recording music ,and doing various projects,to this day.The new kids who came in after the demise of downtown,(which we cracked open ,playing gigs, poetry slams) ,had no place left to play,as the top 40 type bands began to play downtown, and the scene dwindled. This is a document of a better time, when you could get a double mochaccino, smoke countless cigarettes, stand in the street in underwear and combat boots, drink booze, smoke dope, and wreak havoc.Ft.Myers sucks! It did then ,and it's a million times worse now.We had little record stores and comic shops we could play at,but sadly they never made enough revenue to keep on going. The Draft House (owned by Rick, and later Gary),The Main St. Coffee House(Cindy Bruce, who also owned a great thrift store ,right next door),The Indigo Club,Offbeat Records (Samskull in the Patio DeLeon),Record Trader(Ralph Tarantino) ,and oldies radio d.j. Doug Shannon ,all deserve to be in the history books ,with a resounding ,never-ending applause track, playing on to infinity. Thanks to everyone in the scene back then. You helped shape the town, and in turn the Sluggisha legacy, and I love you all.
Please listen with sincerity, and tell me what you think of our scene! Thank you.

WHORESHACK - LIVE! AT THE MAIN STREET COFFEE HOUSE ,FT. MYERS ,FLORIDA

The first and last ever ,live gig by Whoreshack. We were third choice openers since the band Deadbone ,who was originally scheduled to open ,had their drummer die on them ,the second choice opening band ,Turd Thermos ,were all school kids ,who could'nt play because they got caught skipping school ,and most of the band was grounded. So we opened for Conveyor and Big Bong Theory ,thoroughly trashing the audience with our huge cocks! We were a hard act to follow ,baiting the audience with an almost Fear-like venom!A few covers ,mixed in with all original improv instrumentals ,and the hit song ,"Not Come Down". There was fun in the air ,as it was Labor Day Weekend 1993 ,and the boys were crankin' out this slop ,to an undeserving audience.Fuck them! Now you can experience the madness ,without actually having to stand in a room full of slackers, losers, and smelly crust punks and dead heads! This is the shit! Vance played drums ,since original drummer,Mike Smith, was home sleeping!

W.G.O.D. #21 - (Underground punk radio show originally broadcast sometime in 1992)

Hey kiddies! ,Here's another episode of a classic W.G.O.D. radio episode ,with my special in-studio guest ,Fred ( a/k/a Jeff McDonald ,not formerly of Redd Kross). All musical bases are touched on ,here! This is before the Sluggisha Tapes sets became a staple of the show ,before I began putting the date on each archive cassette tape, and long before Doug Shannon was doing voice-overs for me.Very early show ,I sound inexperienced as hell ,and we rag on a rival pirate station ,with their hosts ,Dorky & Dicky ,and even play snippets from their show (they were broadcasting at the same time we were doing this show!) ,and I believe we also made crank calls to their phone ,which was not on the same site which they were broadcasting from ,but a remote site. Anyways ,here's the list ,and enjoy this blast from the past , originally broadcast sometime in 1992!

THE BEATLES - What's The New Mary Jane?
DAVE ROTH - Good Day Sunshine (Beatles)
THE DWARVES - Skin Poppin' Slut / SFVD / Drugstore
IGGY POP - Shake Appeal / 1969 (bootleg 7")
BEASTIE BOYS - Ode To.../ Shadrach Mission
BLATZ - Lullabye
THE DEAD MILKMEN - How It's Gonna Be
T. REX - Rip-off
NEGATIVLAND - Live Here (edit)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
PATO BANTON - Don't Sniff The Coke
THE BIRTHDAY PARTY - Scum (rare flexi-disc)
SONIC YOUTH - White Kross (live! 12")

LOLLY GAG - The Lost PAUL DeRITIS tapes + SPANK demo and e.p.

We have sadly lost another FTM friend. Paul DeRitis was found floating in Portage Creek ,in Kalamazoo ,MI ,after a night of drinking, on March 25th. Here's the obituary:

In Celebration of a life well lived
Paul DeRitis, 41, of Fort Myers, FL passed away on March 25, 2012. A longtime resident of Fort Myers, Paul attended Ft. Myers Beach Elementary School, Bonita Middle School and Cypress Lake High School. Paul was a GED graduate. He was a talented artist, musician and a loving father and son. He is survived by a daughter, Tabitha M. (Matthew) Smith; sons, Vincent Paul DeRitis and Paul Alfredo DeRitis and 2 grandchildren, Maxton and Miles Smith; also surviving are his parents, Lucinda and Anthony DeRitis; sister, Christine (Charles) Curran and brothers, Anthony DeRitis and Phillip (Dani) DeRitis; his grandmother, Mary Bruch of Boone, NC as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 12 Noon. Online condolences may be made to the family at http://www.fortmyersmemorial.com/. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the family in care of Anthony DeRitis, 11640 Oakdale Dr., Ft. Myers, FL 33908.

There is a service for him tomorrow in Ft. Myers ,but the reason I'm posting this is : Paul gave me this 4-track ,unmixed tape ,over 20 years ago ,when Vance ,Brophy ,and I were starting SEXBOY ,and needed a guitarist. But ,alas ,Paul was already playing in 3 different bands at the time ,and had 3 jobs ,and was married with kids ,problems none of the rest of us had at that time.I never listened to or mixed down the tape ,until now. It's really weird that a couple of weeks ago ,I had found the tape ,and toyed with the idea of laying down some vocals over Paul's music. Then Vance called me with the bad news. There are 11 cuts of pure rock n' roll ,Johnny Thunders style punk ,mostly instrumental stuff ,although ,Paul does sing on a few songs at the end. All untitled songs ,and I've also included the demo and e.p. from Paul's 1993 band ,SPANK. This unreleased shit is probably from a couple of years after Spank. Paul was a member of the seminal Ft. Myers teenage punk combo ,THE ROTTEN NUNS ,and the leader of JOHNNY AND THE SUICIDES ,as well as many other bands. He was an accomplished tattoo artist as well. You can see the progression in pictures ,from Johnny Thunders worship ,to Mike Ness/Social Distortion worship (I personally think he looked more like Joe Strummer of The Clash!) ,but he was always rockin'! I didn't know Paul very well ,but I knew enough about him to realize he was one of the good guys. We ran in the same circles ,had many of the same friends ,and loved the same music. Paul was a rock star ,and should have been properly recognized as such! I hope that everyone who knew Paul ,gets to hear this stuff ,and I hope he picks up new fans ,even in death. I wish I could be there for his memorial ,I'm sure I would re-connect with many friends I have'nt seen in years ,but it is not to be. Please leave comments to the memory of Paul DeRitis ,he would appreciate that ,I'm sure. And I'm sure his family would be pleased to hear this lost tape that Paul recorded in the mid-90's! You will be sorely missed ,my friend. The world will not be the same without you in it! Please listen to one of the greatest undiscovered talents in our world ,Paul Deritis.

ONE FELL SWOOP - Mouth Feels Like Summer

A 5 song release. The first(Our Normal Level) and 3rd(Thinning The Blood) tracks are instrumentals that will twist your melon! The second and 4th songs have vocals and are about "Flat Cops" and "Carsick". The 5th track,"Phonesick" is a 19 part movement ,focusing on 19 seperate crank calls ,with hilarious keyboard pre-sets,and added percussion and guitars! Some calls are hilarious ,one is with an uncooperative(at least because of knowing she was being taped, usually she was extremely easy to get talking!) stripper, and a lousy attempt at phone sex! Must be heard to be believed.A fucking riot shall ensue.
This was recorded on Dec.21,1991. The next recording was posted previously on this blog ,from 12/24/1991 ,it's One Fell Swoop Xmas! Look for it somewhere on this massive blog of over 1000 posts!!! This one is great ,though! See original cover art in zip ,deemed too wild for xmas posting!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Hector Koriyama

The greatest unknown, underground ,diy ,indie-punk ,alt-rock ,experimental band ever! Don't know where the album title came from ,but there is a short piece ,"Namesake" ,which toys with the album title. There is a positively insane cover of the Beatles ,"Revolution #9" with a brief interpolation of Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker" ,which will drive you mad! "Slum Sermon" ,is exactly that ,a preaching on the horrors of poverty. There are more songs ,too ,that only OFS could have written! Special guest (a throwback to the Cat Machine days!) was Sean Sommers, who sings on some numbers ,and may even have played some instruments!Good shit as usual from the power-core trio ,from Ft. Myers ,Florida.

ONE FELL SWOOP - Songs By Slobs

There are covers of The Cars and Alvin Lee's Love ,on this outing! The songs have a cohesive bluesy feel ,laid on top of indie-punk ,alt-rock foundations. Some really fine experimental arrangements ,and furious drumming on our home made drum kit!Recorded 12/10/1991 at Cat Machine House ,20 years ago today! Ed,Joel,& Chipmonk thank all of you ,for downloading ,and enjoying their bedroom punk music ,college rock ,to be sure. They only wish for more comments ,and thank those who have commented! A few days after this we formed the band "Stimpy" ,a noisy jazz combo ,which can be found elsewheres on this blog. fuk u h8rs!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Two Cannonball Dinner

Rounding out the "balls" trilogy today ,we have an album from 12/3/1991 ,from the underground losers ,One Fell Swoop. This is the pinnacle of albums dedicated to the downtrodden ,homeless, drunk ,junkie ,loser ,in all of us. Even the song titles spell it out. I did notice that all 9 songs are titled with three word phrases. Starting off with an almost 13 minute instrumental jam ,"We Haven't Smoked" , (although it does sound like we did ,in fact ,smoke!) ,and a sound that will knock your drunk ass to the couch ,so's you can listen and enjoy the rest."Real Hobo Smell" ,a tale of being a bum ,a tramp ,a hobo ,"Cough Syrup Summer" ,cuz it's a cheap buzz , "Burned Out Believers" ,for the beat-down by religion losers ,"Geez , Naw , Thud" ,a dreamer's soliloquy ,also include in the live set list of the band ,"Pot So Smart" ,for the pot heads who can't get jobs because of piss tests , "The Wheezing Monument" ,for the elderly who don't wanna go into a home ,or have their car taken away ,"Frozen Hamburger Shower" ,for the junk food we must eat to survive ,and ending off with ,"Rubber Dollar Bill" ,for everyone who's ever been fast-talked or scammed! The music is cohesive with a bluesy bent.As always ,we switch vocal/drum/guitar duties frequently. Really great band ,with another winner of an album about losers!

ONE FELL SWOOP - Sounds Like Drugs

The boys are back again ,this time for drugs! Another fab guitar freak-out number ,
"Breakfast Claw Butter Horn" ,showing off Chipmonk's prowess on the axe. All 3 "College Rock Hits" ,are included here (Cares Are Oceans Away , Mushrooms , Goils) ,as well as other psych/indie/alt-rock numbers. A covers medley at the end ,runs thru hits by , The Angry Samoans , Johnny Cash , Black Flag , and Sonic Youth. With titles like "(Thank You ,And Enjoy) Music To Hit Bongs By" and "More Planetarium Music" , you should be able to surmise what to expect. Great drug-rock ,from The FTM underground! Recorded 9/28/1991. The album title is a prime example of truth in advertising!

ONE FELL SWOOP - The Whole Works

After the demise of the much-beloved Cat Machine (9/90 - 9/91) ,Ed ,Joel ,& Chipmonk started up this fine indie/college-rock band ,with much experimentation ,and exploration of underground punk stylings. I will document this band,in the same fashion as Cat Machine ,ie. post the tapes on the day they were recorded,20 years to the date! This is the amazing first release ,a mostly instrumental affair ,tho' vocals do appear on a few tracks. All their influences are covered in "one fell swoop" ,hence the band name. There is much to come, even though their run (9/91 - 3/92) was shorter than that of Cat Machine ,they played many live gigs, all of which will be posted to this series eventually. They broke the downtown Ft. Myers scene wide open by securing a string of gigs at The Draft House ,on Dean St. ,the first band to really play gigs downtown. And look at it now! Shitty cover-bands rule downtown FTM now,and I will not take credit for that shit! When we got the scene kickin' ,it was all diy /punk bands playing , and drawing a nice little crowd. As new venues opened ,more bands and kids ,started frequenting the downtown area. It was quite a fun time ,and I long for those days to return. But,alas ,we are older ,the scene has changed ,and nobody is really interested in that anymore. There is a supposed new noise scene beginning in FTM tho' ,spearheaded by Tree ,Whitey and others ,and old-timers like Sean Burch/Monson and Jamie Hake ,are also contributing to the scene. Most of the people I just mentioned ,along with Noisekillr and a bunch of other performers ,will be playing at Cafe Bohemia ,in St Pete. on 10/29/2011 ,the 4th Annual St Pete. Noise Fest! And Noisekillr and Tree are about to release a disc of their recent collaborations! But back to OFS , there are no hits on this tape, nothing that ended up on their set-lists ,but there is the spirit of their jamming ways. Just gettin' toasted ,and playing improv jams! You will also notice the strange drum sounds on some tracks. We did use drum machines ,but we also created a drum kit ,exclusively built for useage on OFS recordings. It consisted of an empty type writer case , and a deep-dish pizza pan ,inset into a snare drum rim. Which we played with a hammer and pliers ,as "sticks". A unique sound ,which no other band had, plus we used guitars ,keyboards ,and a variety of "found" objects ,which would become "instruments" , in our diy/indie rock world of sound. Live we used a "real" drumset ,and 2 guitars (no bass) ,sometimes keys. It was a whirlwind life for OFS , who should have achieved alt-rock fame , but it was not to be. Chipmonk went off to form The Apples(In Stereo) ,who became media darlings ,after they kicked him out ,and then they wrote a song for the Cartoon Network series ,"The Power Puff Girls". Joel and Ed ,formed even more off-shoots from the Cat Machine/OFS axis ,as well as solo efforts galore. This series of their recordings will continue thru March of 2012. Collect them all! As with Cat Machine ,there will be a tribute disc for OFS ,after the series has run it's course! This music will open people's eyes and ears to the magic that was One Fell Swoop!! It would be cool if Joel and Chipmonk and others who saw us live ,left some anecdotes and comments in the box below! Recorded 9/10/1991 ,20 yrs ago ,yesterday!

CAT MACHINE -Tooth Breath Spewdom Not Sneeze

Don't know about that title, but the music is fine!Ed,Joel,Tony,Chipmonk, and special guests,Shane Carwile, and Billy Drake,on 2/16/1991,in the FTM.Really good tunes here include: "Song For Billy To Sing", "Song For Billy To Sing Again",(Billy never actually sings,or utters a word for that matter,on either of these tracks) ,"Gettin' The Gumption" ,"Suicidal Ballerina Blues" , "The Strangled Penguin's Chrome Glider Dream" , "Accidental Toaster","90 Cups Of Coffee An Hour",and "Cowering Spastics".The whole thing is great altogether,I'm just pointing out some highlights,or lowlights,as the case may be.The 26th release from this obtuse,outsider,unknown,undiscovered,cult-band,from Ft.Myers,Florida,80's thru 90's.Keep following their path to eventual destruction,in the rest of this year-long series, more coming soon!

CAT MACHINE - 2-eaten alive by wild dogs

On this second tape,Oct. 2nd,1990, we kinda jam like the first tape, there is the original version of "Queen Turd Of Shit Hill",which sounds nothing like what it ended up to be.There is also a second version of Queen Turd here, which does sound like an embroyonic version of what became a live staple. We cover the Stooges, then I went to pick up our special guest for this tape,Chuck Connell. While I was gone,Joel & Tony tore off a really cool, spooky little refrain titled,"One Creepy Little Town",about life in the FTM.It is the mellowest song here,as well as the quietest.Yes there is much feedback noise,of the grunge variety, like Jesus Lizard,or somethin'.When Chuck joined in on this tape,(he's here for half the tape),things, suddenly picked up,into an almost different band.We all take turns singing, even Chuck. Some highlights are,"The Mighty Cat Machine" , You're So Contrary,Chees'd Psychic Ya" , and one of our many shining moments,"Come Hang With Me".Chuck plays the bass, like a son-of-a-gun,he is the bassmaster! The next 4 tapes in this year long series, are not dated, but in exact position in the masters vault,as the day they were recorded,so they are in order.I'll post one per each Friday in October, which is probably about right, as the next dated tape is 11/10/90 .Anyway, get this, give Chuck praise in the comments(he plays bass on tracks 12 thru 22),and don't forget, the Cat Machine tribute comp, which I think I may wait till next year, when this series runs out,and all the tapes are posted, and you'll be able to learn any one of our hundreds of songs, and send it in for the tribute post!! Enjoy this. Chuck is moving back to the FLA !!! living just 30-40 minutes from me,we will be working on lots of music together!

RAMMPAGE-debut ep

This is some biker bar band from the Ft. Myers scene.I don't think anyone in our scene would know them, since none of us ,with a few exceptions, have been known to frequent biker bars.4 songs that verge on heavy metal, really some chooglin' ol' hard rock.I can hear Alice Cooper,Kiss,Tygers Of Pan Tang,Motley Crue, all blended up with some southern rock.A couple of times they almost sound like the great cheez metal band,Rokker, which is cool, since Rammpage hasn't a clue.Recorded at Sound Check Studios,in the FTM.Not bad, very rare,if you like rock music at all, you'll be diggin' this. They can't spell.
