VARIOUS ARTISTS - St. Patrick's Day 2012 Live At The Swamp III

Happy Easter ,everyone! Here's 4 bands on the Brown Bear Records label ,had a little party/living room gig ,on St. Patrick's Day ,and recorded the whole affair. Jake Joyce ,of Seasonal Men's Wear ,Nacho Knees ,and other bands and projects ,goes first with a set of topical holiday covers ,all done acoustic folk/punk style. Next up ,representing the Black Metal underground is Severed Vein. Then G.A.T. ,takes the stage ,and blasts out a few rounds of poppy punk stylings. And finally the duo of, The Dirty Heels ,featuring the lovely and talented Danielle (my new favorite female vocalist!) ,on the smooth, sultry ,and sexy vocals backed by Tommy on guitar ,slingin' covers ,and originals (mis-titled ,the real titles are: track 15 "Faking It" , track 17 "All I Wanted") ,that sound like oldies cut from the same cloth as the covers!. This is a great release ,and everyone should enjoy it! Props to Jake for sending it in ,and all the bands for getting together for this release!

M.C. OSSO - Umbra Penumbra

This rarity has been asking to be uploaded forever! Look it up on the web ,you won't find any info on this record or M.C. Osso ,anywhere! Great revved-up (sometimes) ,and mellowed-out blues songs ,with a folky bent on some tracks. There is some harmonica and bongos here, and M.C. is backed up by Tio Frijol & The Soul Casserole (Tierra Del Fuego's finest!) ,and you'll also hear some flute, sax, piano ,and organ in addition to Mr. Osso's fine guitar jams! From 1974 ,recorded in New York ,on Axe Records(a division of Hardedge ,Inc.) ,and with that record company name and logo(see lower corner of album cover) ,you'd be expecting some metal or in my case some Mentors! But ,alas ,it is not to be ,this is just some jukin' blues that everyone should hear. The really downtrodden stuff comes on tracks like ,"Chances For Survival" ,and "Executioners". There's even a song that should have been featured on a movie soundtrack from recent times ,"Superbad Blues" ! I could definitely see (and hear) Dylan Houser ,settling into this sound as he grows older with his Bloodponies project.Pretty neat-o stuff ,and rare ,apparently!

BUD & SIM SIMANI - Christmas Fancy

This group ,from Newfoundland ,is folk/country ,with almost a zydeco feel at times. From 1984 ,sounds much earlier. The lead track ,"Any Mummers Allowed In" , is their hit ,apparently.
Fuckin' Canucks are weirdsville ,daddy-o

NORMA TANEGA - Walkin' My Cat Named Dog b/w I'm The Sky

The first,(and best) single from Norma ,in 1966. Kinda folky ,but cool .Dusty Springfield was her girlfriend for a stretch ,and Norma even wrote some songs for her. Pretty lofty statement on the B-side ,huh?

From an alt-rock rag of the 90's,issue #42,to be exact,1997.Runs the gamut from lush folkscapes,to electronic grooves,to aggressive pop onslaughts,to countryfied ramblings. The kind of comp I imagine my friend,Joel Rizzo ,would enjoy.

CAT MACHINE - Unplugged !

Live from Tony's room,11/10/90,recorded between midnite and 3 a.m.,with special guests ,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile,Katie Ball, and Christian Vic,(who showed up towards the end ,and crashed on the couch).Ed and Joel, the other 2/3rds of the core, were also in attendance. An acoustic outing, using guitar, pipes, and flutes, sampling, all manners of percussion, and some of the weirdest lyrics, this side of the pail.About the last 2o minutes is Ed,with an acoustic guitar, spitting stream of conciousness, free style words,to an audience of sleeping participants,to his humor, and their discontent.Funny as hell, and a few songs stand out,Tony's centerpiece,"Another One Drink",which he wrote, everyone singing in unison on,"Lost My Mind For A Moment(Fuck Magic Bus)",a totally different from the previous version,"Crude Being Made Flesh",and a cover of B.T.O.'S ,"Takin' Care Of Business",which sounds like drunken derelicts behind a dumpster. The rest of the tunes defy description, only to say they sound like Cat Machine, leaves much to the imagination. Not their usual sound, tho' they did use acoustic styles on the song,"When The Apeman Smiles",on a later studio tape,to great effect,as well as the tune,"Treehouse" on another later recording, but never before or since ,have they performed a whole tape acoustically. This was right around the time mtv was starting their Unplugged series,so we ran with it.Folky, punky, bluesy, and Shane does a drum solo,on an improvised drum set! This is worth your while, you will be amused, and looking forward to the next tape, dated 11/28/90,just after Thanksgiving!

WILLIAM WESLEY & THE TINY SOCKETS-hen men ?

I put the ?,after the title, cuz the cover has so many things that could be the title,i went for a fortune cookie message,:Learn Chinese-Hen-Men-Very Boring, which is far from an apt description of this tape.Wes continues to paint masterpieces of homeland america,on this one.If you listened to any music between 1985-and now, this will appeal to you.I know folks like the chipmunk,Tony and Joel,Billy,Shane, and others, would love this stuff. An indie-punk's wet dream. This is from Unread Records & Tapes, when they were in GA.

WILLIAM WESLEY & THE TINY SOCKETS-the teething tapes-2005-07

This was the first recording i heard from my pal Wes,of Pounding Mill,(formerly of Paint Lick)Virginia.he's building him a building right now,on his dad's land,to live in.A very prolific performer,he plays out live a lot,and has been a lot of places. This disc is a comp from several releases:"You're Older Than Your Teeth","Second Serving","Split with Albert Fish & the Presbyterian Church",I Don't Ever Want To See Your Face Again",a track from a Chaotic Underworld noise comp.,and a bunch of unreleased stuff. To me ,I hear Box Elder-era Pavement, with Daniel Johnston on vocals.Even the song titles and lyrics are very Daniel Johnston to the max!Very indie/alt,lotsa noisieness, but it's like noise-pop,not so annoying you would turn it off, more than likely you would turn it UP!!!And the little phone calls, skits, audio verite, in between, during, and after songs ,presents a real slice of americana, best heard thru open kitchen windows ,with pies cooling on the ledge.A true American underground legend,a real folk singer ,for now times.Try this out for size, along with the above posts,Wes will be sending more stuff. He also appears on,"We Want Our Life Back-The BP Oil Protest Compilation",below, with a jingly little tune ,that passes by like a caffiene breeze. visit Wes and be his friend on myspace at:www.myspace.com/thetinysockets

CANDY BUTCHERS

...and here they are, america's newest hit-makers with that happenin' tall dwarves sound, the candy butchers!...,or so goes the intro to one of their songs,in tandem with a neil young cover and a velvet underground cover, that almost covers the spectrum of their sound, kinda folky-country-psych,with humor and fun.chipmunk and joel rizzo are the phenomenal duo who produced this recording, and it rocks rather well according to the description in the old sluggisha catalog"duo of drug-laced dudes,in a smelly bedroom, cranking out poppy/psych/rock/punk numbers, and sounding cool".i can't think of another duo that wields this exact sound, but if there is ,these guys rule the roost.there are other"candy butchers"out there (as a band name)but this is the only real CANDY BUTCHERS.cover art by steve reed, samples by me.you gotta have this!
