CAT MACHINE - A Chip Off The Old Monk

This tape marked the first appearance of Chipmonk, who became a full fledged member, played out live with Cat Machine, even helped found One Fell Swoop, along with Joel and Ed,and played in many Sluggisha bands, before joining The Apples In Stereo! Chipmonk sings some great songs here,"Rat Ranglers" and "Has Anybody Seen My Pants?".Special guests on this tape were:Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, with his vocal finesse on ,"Woman Burger" , and "Hole In The Wall" , Chris Nicholson's rendition of ,"Summer Job", plus Chuck Connell and Billy Drake. Joel's vocals here are some of his best, including,"Man About Town" , "Impatient Years" and ,"The Defiant Ones".Tony croons in his own style to,"Moon Over Mannequins" ,"Treachery Rides The Range" and,"Sinister Desires".Ed's sermon ,"Thoughts On Capitalism (Greed)",and a "Mr. Rogers" impersonation,as well as the stompers ,"Boiling In The Bathtub" and " Barfly Cannibal", kinda defines the Cat Machine sound.Chuck has a go at it with ,"Chuck's Ghetto, parts 1 and 2",and Billy is on like King Kong.A great release (their 19th!),kinda setting you up for what comes next, more hit pop tunes! In 2 parts, get it now!!!!!!!!!!!

CAT MACHINE -Felching Pat Harrington Jr.

Just try to come up with a more disgusting thought, than the title of this album.I included 2 different cover arts, cuz I could'nt decide on one. This tape ,from January 15th,1991,features special guests ,Chuck Connell,Vance Burdge,Chris Nicholson (R.I.P.),and Pizza Breath,in addition to the core trio of Ed,Tony, and Joel.Chuck has his own little section here, with ,"Chuck's Corner",and Chris sing/talks on ,"Shrimp Circus" , and "Fizz Fazz(Sausage)".A few spoken pieces, with all of us talking, and some rap/hip-hop on ,"Battle Of The Rock Lords",and the debut of "Cat Machine Is In The Haus".Covers of Ramones and Jefferson Bullshit,at end.2 parts,I would'nt download either of them tho',because this underground,outsider,unknown,cult-band,is one of the worst bands that ever played. And I mean best when I say worst.Recorded straight to boombox,in FT.Myers,FL,at Cat Machine House.

CAT MACHINE-Kroonchy Stars All-Loser Jam (We Suck, We Know It,And We Don't Care !)

The third tape from the "mighty" Cat Machine,is the core group of Tony & Joel Rizzo,Ed Wood (me) and special guests for the full duration of this outing are Chuck Connell,Billy Drake, and Vance Burdge.A lot of noise is kicked up,some real speaker shredding tunes, these are. There are a few early versions of songs that show up a few tapes later, sounding more song-like,specifically,"Plastic Jesus","Shit On A Stick","I'll Brain Ya !",and,"Whiskey For Lunch". Then a few more tapes after that, you have different versions of these songs : "Gov. Bob","Who The Hell Is Me Again?","Shit Lipstick", "36 Cents","Her Husband Was There",and "Lon Chaney Jr.'s Dead". Another few songs from this release appear on later tapes,in tweaked forms.Chuck holds down a lot of the jams, with his bass expertise, and Billy tears off a few good riffs.I noticed i did most of the vocals, but i think some of the other guys do some too. This is a great live document, recorded as most of the "Machine's" tapes were, direct to boombox. We did a lot of 4 -track recording,as well, but more sporadically than the live tapes, which averaged 1-2 ,90 minute tapes a week !Some of this may be harmful to pets and other living things, beware!!!
This was recorded on October 8th,1990.
There are two files cause it was so big,Make sure to get both parts for the full effect!!

CAT MACHINE - 2-eaten alive by wild dogs

On this second tape,Oct. 2nd,1990, we kinda jam like the first tape, there is the original version of "Queen Turd Of Shit Hill",which sounds nothing like what it ended up to be.There is also a second version of Queen Turd here, which does sound like an embroyonic version of what became a live staple. We cover the Stooges, then I went to pick up our special guest for this tape,Chuck Connell. While I was gone,Joel & Tony tore off a really cool, spooky little refrain titled,"One Creepy Little Town",about life in the FTM.It is the mellowest song here,as well as the quietest.Yes there is much feedback noise,of the grunge variety, like Jesus Lizard,or somethin'.When Chuck joined in on this tape,(he's here for half the tape),things, suddenly picked up,into an almost different band.We all take turns singing, even Chuck. Some highlights are,"The Mighty Cat Machine" , You're So Contrary,Chees'd Psychic Ya" , and one of our many shining moments,"Come Hang With Me".Chuck plays the bass, like a son-of-a-gun,he is the bassmaster! The next 4 tapes in this year long series, are not dated, but in exact position in the masters vault,as the day they were recorded,so they are in order.I'll post one per each Friday in October, which is probably about right, as the next dated tape is 11/10/90 .Anyway, get this, give Chuck praise in the comments(he plays bass on tracks 12 thru 22),and don't forget, the Cat Machine tribute comp, which I think I may wait till next year, when this series runs out,and all the tapes are posted, and you'll be able to learn any one of our hundreds of songs, and send it in for the tribute post!! Enjoy this. Chuck is moving back to the FLA !!! living just 30-40 minutes from me,we will be working on lots of music together!

THE CHEESY TIME WARPS

this is chuck and chris(peegsly) connell, brothers in rock!chuck is on bass and git, chris on percussion, this sounds exactly as their name implies.kinda trippy acid/whippet rock.mellow interludes lead to raucous jamming and these little cut-ups,0r time warps,if you will, where you pause the recording as you're playing,so the music becomes disoriented.really cool, just 4 long instrumentals,i named the band and the songs ,upon delivery, and first hearing of this masterpiece!

HENRY MITCHELL-SOMZ -WITH MIKE WATT!!!

another solo artist in the continuing series, henry was not an immediate sluggisha family member, but rather a fan and fellow musician from san pedro, california.i know some of you are saying,"hmmm, now who do i know from san pedro?",that's right folks, the minutemen!and featured on this release(on at least 2 songs)is mike watt!! playing bass solos, and doing spoken vocals!any minutemen, firehose,or mike watt fans(hi,chuck!)(hi,fords!)take note of this.as far as i know this was never released,i've never heard of it,internet search turns up zilch,so i guess this may be rare.fairly pedestrian 70's style mellow rock,1 blues instrumental number(for a minute),sometimes the vocals sound like a choir boy at sunday mass, pretty interesting piece of minutemen artifact, tell me what you think it sounds like.henry was apparently a drummer primarily, but tried to spread his wings here by doing vocals ,bass ,guitars, and drums.a couple of guest guitars as well, all notes in zip, details on the last 2 tracks are sketchy, may also feature watt, tell me if you think so.i don't know if that's henry in the pic above,he sent this for distro thru sluggisha.check it out!

CHUCK CONNELL-some of the best of CHUCK!

this was a labor of love for my good pal,and sluggisha all-star,chuck.i've never met a nicer guy in my life,as well as the bassmaster extrordinaire.many bands chuck was involved in are here,as well as solo turns, and some brand new tracks minted for this comp.lots of guests help chuck out also.vance, brophy,me,and peegsley(his lil bro, chris)are featured and the band list is as follows:absolut, cat machine, nitro kick, cheesy time warps, panther piss, phone sluts,on the lamb, cool papa rider, fat, dumb, and happy, and chuck's latest solo effort, gold on fire, which is totally professional sounding.i wish i had some big monster blunt to lay on you,as well as other bands with chuck, but this is what i got.there is much more of most of the bands on this comp as well as more chuck.hopefully chuck will get some more stuff together for a new comp of newer material,we are waiting chuck! 25 tracks that go on for 2 hours.man chuck plays long songs.there are some instrumentals,of all styles, tho' chuck really sticks to funk.he was like the flea of ft. myers, but also was in thrash metal bands,as well as alternative music bands, and some rather trippin'solo stuff.this is a good introduction to the guy we all know as chuck!if you're lucky ,you may one day meet him.till then ,study this profile!G O D.p.s.leave chuck some comments on his great work!thanks!

PANTHER PISS

this band was a one -off project with 8 members.me ,chipmunk, billy, shane, vance, chuck, sean, and fred, all took part.chuck's bass lines really hold this all together.kinda am-rep/sonic youth/free jazz, type of sound, some instros, some vox.don't let the 1st track fool you,we were going for that,"the tape deck is eating your tape sound"(this was originally on cassette),to freak people out.has some sax on a few tracks as well.can't pin down a genre,as with most of our bands,so just download and listen up,click here:   https://archive.org/download/PantherPiss/126PantherPiss.zip

the PHONE SLUTS

this is me and fred, with a novel idea, call people and have them sing over the phone, while we play the music on our end.i had a phone tap mic hooked into the 4-track,and the instruments all hooked up so the singer could also hear the music in the phone.we also do a few actual songs ourselves, without the phone guests(sluts).the guests include some of fred's family(carol, rob hoke),answering machines, mrs. carwile(shane's mom),ralph tarantino, gunnar, tony rizzo, dean, some girl?,sean woodcock, and chuck connell.some of this stuff is just phenomenal, but alas,it was only this one tape, wish i had done more, cuz it's a very interesting concept, with bizzare outcomes.this was slightly before the fun sluts(a few posts down below)and right after freddy's solo album(which will post soon).if you like all this reality t.v. crap ,you will love this eavesdropping on a band and it's phone singing and talking guests.different than any band you ever heard, here or elsewhere...........G O D .click here,slut!: http://archive.org/download/ThePhoneSluts/117ThePhoneSluts.zip

P O S T # 1 0 0 ! ! ! CAT MACHINE-"The Mystery,The History,& Shit" (A Chronological Look At The Greatest Underground Band,EVER!!!)

finally,we made it to post # 100....over a month in the works,199 tracks clocking in at 9.9 hours of ridiculous goodness.the picture above shows all the tapes(minus 2 i found after the picture, bringing the total to 47 tapes) that i pulled this together from, and believe me there's much much more.for the downright greatest hits of all, grab "litterbox",a compilation found elsewhere on this blog.this here thing tho',being split into 10 zip files, runs thru every era.cat machine b.c.(before chipmunk),the chipmunk era,4-track era, live rehearsal era.it all started one day when a friend stopped by and happened to bring joel rizzo with him,we hit it off and even jammed a little on a few things i was working on at the time, and he said to come to his place and rock with him and his brother, tony.i was there soon and we took off on a year long spree of music making as cat machine.gramp's house where we usually recorded, became cat machine house to all who knew us.we had many guest stars,as anyone who showed up when we were recording was in cat machine.dave roth, katie ball, nathan adams, tall ray, chris nicholson, philbert ze chocolat clown, brian"snax"siders, sean sommers, dave antelope leaps, chuck connell, and more people joined in on various songs.more frequent collaborators were billy drake, shane carwile, vance burdge, who were all practically full fledged members, they played with us so much.we recorded direct into a boombox usually, but as you'll hear,we hit our stride on the 4-track sessions.when chipmunk joined,on the 19th tape,"a chip off the old monk",he brought with him to the group, great knowledge of guitar and music, and added a new dimension to our sound.between billy and chris ,we had a couple of the greatest guitarists i've ever known in my life.also imbibing substances and alcohol fueled our furor, hell,we were tripping on the "god's afterbirth"tape(i should post that in it's entirety,it' s a blast!).we would trade instrument and vocal duties after each song, even live on stage, which probably made people think we were totally nuts(we were).chris also wrote some of the greatest and funniest lyrics ever, but could sing anything and make you burst a blood vessel laughing, using many voices and personas.the first gig we ever played was the best anyone could hope for.(oh.yeah,gramps was also a frequent "guest",as he would bust in on the proceedings with a shocking regularity.once i walked in on gramps in his bedroom,he had a dirty blue fuzzy blanket laying on his bed, with about 6 cooked hot dogs and 6 buns ,which he was in the process of constructing.)we played for about 35 disgruntled youths in a juvenile detention center,i wish we had a recording of THAT! 2 kids liked us, the rest just sat there brooding,we felt like the cramps at napa state mental hospital,it was swell.then we got a show with myopia at visions,a nightclub.no recording of that either, probably for the best,as the owner said we were too loud and rattling every window in his establishment, and we weren't allowed back, but myopia played ther a few more times(cat machine pre-made flyers for a few more shows there, before we found out we were 86'd).we were supposed to do a benefit gig at norma jean's for some dead chick, but we fizzled out before that happened(me,chris, and joel played there as one fell swoop tho')we existed sept.90-sept.91,then me, joel ,and tony re-formed for a reunion tape(projek pimps)some of which is featured here,in mid 1992.we also re-grouped again with vance and did "the last newest one",to be found elsewhere on this blog along with our xmas release"poolside yuletide".cat machine was very important for many reasons.first off,we spawned over 100 bands and projects featuring one or more of us,before, during and long after cat machine.we heavily influenced many young kids just getting into the scene into starting their own bands.we were at the very beginning of a scene which died as we knew it by 1997.we were somewhat of a mysterious bunch, kinda secret society stuff,in our little cat machine world.the name cat machine came from the 1st tape, when we took a bunch of crazy mary's cats and put them in a pillowcase and recorded it.thus we invented a cat machine.it's the first track on "litterbox",if your'e interested(also now included here! track 00).we all wrote lyrics, mostly me ,i had notebooks full,i used to bring to every session, tony wrote some, chris wrote some, joel kicked in,and we all passed around a note book and took turns writing lines in some instances.we all sang,we all played any instrument or non-instrument that we could get our hands on.we experimented with many styles of music, blending them into the signature cat machine sound.at sessions usually someone would come up with a riff, then it was 1-2-3-go!,making for some crazy ,sometimes improv, songs.even this makes cat machine important, the name"sluggisha"came from a song(included here)called"let me be your soybean buddy"and the line,"eat meat, makes you sluggish-a",which was a thing we picked up from listening to the fall.the singer, mark e. smith, has a habit of adding "uh" to the end of each line."3 mark smiths-ah"(included here) is me ,tony ,and joel going off at the same time, spouting lines from books, mark smith stylee, just laugh ,dummy.anyway in conclusion, september 25th,2010 will mark the 20th anniversary of the band.i always hope for the big reunion gig,so guys if you're reading this, let's set something up,we could rule the world about now.but on that date i will post a comp. of the weirdest,strangest,mind-bendingly off the wall tracks we ever laid down, there are so many to choose from.i'll put up more before that, but until then try dissecting THIS! also in the zip files is a bunch of flyers, info on which tapes the songs came from,a list of guests and the tracks they appear on,and the original sluggisha logo, drawn by steve reed.there are many gems here, and everything we did pretty much rules,so you can't go wrong .oh and one more thing:PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS,WITH YOUR NAME ,E-MAIL,ANY INFO YOU WANT TO LEAVE,BUT PLEASE GIMME FEEDBACK ON THIS AND ALL POSTS!!THANKS-----G O D.click here : https://archive.org/download/POST100CatMachine-theMysterytheHistoryShita/100CatMachine.zip
