First off ,this is dedicated to my friend, Food Fortunata ,a walking encyclopedia of baseball knowledge.And seeing how spring training has begun ,I thought it a good time to pop this up on the blog.This single ,from 1990 ,on Tried and True Music ,is the story of one of the greatest baseball players in history. Jerry Jeff a/k/a JJ ,wrote "Mr. Bojangles" back in the 60's , Brooks and Dunn did a song about him ," The Ballad Of Jerry Jeff Walker" ,and JJ discovered Jimmy Buffet. We'll excuse all that stuff ,and just focus on this country-tinged song ,about Nolan Ryan. JJ's son,Django (pictured on the cover ,by his dad ,wonder if he named him after Django Rheinhardt? probably so!) , is now also a country music artist ,often opening for ,or joining his dad on stage. Hey ,batter,batter,batter.....SWIIIING!!!!!

If I were you ,I'd download this ,and seek out volumes 1 and 3 from this man, pronto! On County Records (County 509) ,outta NY(??!!) from ,I think ,1967. I've seen this record on the web ,but never with this cover ,or catalog number.Found it next to The Foster Family String Band album ,while thrifting ,50 cents. "If The River Was Whiskey",is my new theme song! John ,you must hear this ,and I'd like to suggest that you cover a few of these ditties!
A nudie record from 1958! The guy is announced as Sam Nichols (or Nickels?) ,and mentions his own name several times throughout.So I don't know how this could be Billy Devroe (unless he was working under an alias).Could not find any info on this ,but it is bawdy(for the times) songs ,and joke stories accompanied by light country music,recorded live! Subtitled "Naughty Songs Of Sex And Sins For Adults Only" , while in today's world it is no more raunchy than Regis Philbin! Fetches a high price with collectors for the nude cover ,a ploy artists used back then to sell more records!Got it from my buddy Ralph Tarantino of Record Trader ,during a record swap session. On Laff Records. How ya like that 25 cents someone wrote on the top corner!I have more stuff like this ,gimme a shout in the comments if you want more!!
A fine local find. This outlaw redneck guy recorded and produced this single in Largo ,on Dead Frog Records outta St. Petersburg,FL. Basically you have a David Alan Coe cover on the a side ,and a Tom T. Hall cover on the b side. Pretty good for a local boy ,found it in a thrift shop in Land O' Lakes ,years ago. Thought it might sit pretty on here. Rare as all hell ,try to find some info on this thing,if you can! Impossible!!
North Carolinian ,Barbara Grindstaff, (whoa,what a last name ,I wonder if she ever grinded any staffs!!) ,had hits in the early to mid 60's. This single is a promo copy ,produced by Chet Atkins,1966. The a side ,"Chicken Feed" ,is a humorous country bop ,while side b sounds almost like Connie Francis ,Annette Funicello ,or the writer of the song ,Skeeter Davis! She's old!
This group ,from Newfoundland ,is folk/country ,with almost a zydeco feel at times. From 1984 ,sounds much earlier. The lead track ,"Any Mummers Allowed In" , is their hit ,apparently.
A collection of fine drinking songs. Country-fied ,and I don't really care for country music ,but the old stuff,like this,is great! Johnny had a hit with ,"Ten Little Bottles" ,and followed up with this full -length gem. "Beer-Cicles" ,is mis-spelled on the cover ,but the song rules. As well as the rest of this album.There's even a story,"Octopus" ,and a follow-up to "Ten Little Bottles" ,named ,"The Morning After". You just gotta drink up,and listen to this here music,it's great.
From the vast shitlands of Ohio ,comes The Bible Beaters. They sound kinda country/spiritual/gospel-punk ,with a huge spoonful of humor. Reminds me ,at times, of The Dick Panthers.They are still active,and are in fact playing "The Last Rock N' Roll Show Ever On The Face Of The Planet" ,on 12/21/2012.Totally not religious,but bashing religions,all the way!Sent in by John (Kaagootaabaa) ,much thanks.
This ends with a skit ,that sounds like the characters from the other disc below ,some fucked up fellas.The music and vocals here ,are great as on all their stuff ,and weird and stupid. I think you will enjoy the full Dick Panthers catalog ,I recommend it very highly! In the highest!I bet these guys are pro musicians,havin' some beers,and doodlin' around! Like the Beatles of our generation ,or something! And the art and notes in all the zips of these guys,is fab!
This one is quite a bit more country -tinged ,than the one below,and a hint of gospel sneaks in as on that disc ,but don't fear,it's dumb! After the first several numbers there is a trippy spoken thing ,with suitably trippy accompaniment , "Cars" , while just following that is , " Sha Na Na" ,a foul-mouthed 50's tribute, then it gets weirder with , "Rainbow Worl' " ,which is hilarious ,and it ends with ,"Scandalous" ("Goodbye To You" ,by Scandal) ,which sounds like a female vocalist doing karaoke? I don't know ,just download it ,man!
My new pals , The Dick Panthers ,sent in some discs to post! I'll start here ,they all stick to the same basic sound,with enough interesting diversions in music and vocals ,to make you wanna hear it again and again! First off, most of the subject matter has to do with religion and /or masturbation,the music is well-recorded ,and obviously played by folks ,that are too talented to be playing tardcore , but this is great stuff,nonetheless! They had tracks on the ,"WC500" comp ,from Wheelchair , as well as the more recent ,"Fart Filet" compilation. Imagine ,if you will , Elvis, Jimi , James Brown , The Residents, Negativland (the last 2 they channel ,effortlessly ,on the last 2 tracks ,a skit ,and a noise/sampler number) ,any drunken country singer,and Jesus , if they started a band.
