Decorated A5 Journal Covers

I went out on Thursday and met up with a FB friend that I've never met before. We had a lovely day and called into Hobby Craft and TKMaxx in Derby.  I picked up a couple of Seawhite hard backed journals along with a few other bits.

I picked up this pack of napkins in TKMaxx.

Then I set to and decorated the outside front and back covers.

I used the napkin on the back as I wanted to keep it flat so it's easier to write in.

And there are resin pieces on the front.

Stencil Transfers

I took a piece of A4 card and using PVA glue pasted on various pieces of paper including book, tissue and map and also added some washi and tissue tape to the mix.

I did exactly the same with this piece but coloured the background first.

Once dry, I added various colours of decoart premium acrylic paint. The right hand side ended up more green than what I wanted it so I added a watered down layer of white.

And this one I left bright.

I added some marks in silver and gold.

To both of the pieces. I then gave them both a coat of matte medium to seal them.

I printed out a background using my cheapo inkjet printer. Remember if you are using words, they need to be the wrong way round for this step.

Next I placed the stencils were I wanted them on the background and used a bit of masking tape to hold them in place.

For the music stencil I coloured in the image using a black sharpie pen.

And for Eve I used black decoart modelling paste.

Once they were completely dry I took a couple of photocopies, again using my cheap inkjet printer.

Next I completely covered both of the images with decoart tinting base.

In total, I did three coats of the tinting base and once dry, one coat of the matte medium and again left it to completely dry.

I gave the coloured base another coat of matte medium, and whilst it was still wet I placed the photocopy on the top.

This is the photocopy placed on the top of the coloured background.

To ensure it was totally stuck down I used a brayer.

Then I left them overnight to dry.

I dampened them slightly with warm water and a sponge.

And started to gently rub away the top layer of paper.

And the second one. Don't get paper too wet and don't rub too hard or you will rub the transfer away.

All the paper has been removed from each piece.

Once dry, I gave each one a coat of decoart ultra matte varnish which makes the colours pop.

Next I cut them to size.

And mounted them onto black card.

They look completely different with different coloured backgrounds.

I really enjoyed making these and I know some of you will be thinking, why didn't you just stencil the image straight onto the backgrounds, but I wanted to show how they could be used in a different way.

Cherub Canvas

So I watched this video posted on FB and just had to have a go. Quite pleased with how it turned out for a first go, but next time I need to be more generous with the powertex.

Close up of the fab crackle with the ivory powertex and the bisters.

I used kitchen roll to frame the picture and added in a little powertex cherub and some small wooden hearts.

Printer Image Transfers

I decided to use mdf for the background pieces, they are approx 7" x 5".

I searched out a couple of images and printed them out on my inkjet printer in black and white.

Primed the mdf pieces with white tinting base.

Still using the tinting base I blocked out the areas I wanted to remain opaque and once dry added a generous layer of media matte medium over the top of the whole printout.

While they were drying, I used a brayer to add colour to the mdf pieces. Red, purple and blue to the left and red, green, orange and yellow on the right hand piece. Once dry I added a layer of media matte medium.

I added another layer of media matte medium to the mdf piece and placed the printout on the top. Once it was in place I used a brayer to smooth it out. I left it to dry over night.

This morning I sponged water onto the bottom one and you can see the image popping through.

I started gently rubbing the paper away with my fingers.

It didn't quite stick properly at the bottom where you can see the bright purple, it tore and lifted off when I rubbed it.

I did exactly the same with the second image.

Both of them with the paper completely rubber off.

And finally a layer of ultra matte varnish was added which made the background colours pop and bring them back to life again.

All products used were from the DecoArt range and I used the

Textured Tags

I have thrown everything under the sun at these two tags! I started off by adding the following DecoArt products, clear crackle, matte medium and white crackle paint. I smeared them all over the tags.

Next I used the heat tool and made all the above products bubble to create some texture. I painted the tag with chalky finish paint in lace, then dazzling metallic silver sage, then black shimmer. Next I added metallic silver from the Media range along with a coat of paynes grey. Finally I added gold, blue, violet and magenta interference paints again from the media range.

This was done in exactly the same way except instead of the paynes grey I used carbon black and as you can see, the interference paints show up much better on a darker surface, hopefully you can see the texture.

I took a couple of cardboard mounts and added a mix of ultra matte varnish and texture sand paste. I like to add some of the varnish to the sand paste as I find it helps it stick to the project better.

Once dried, I added paynes grey, transparent yellow iron oxide, quinacridone violet and magenta and interference violet all from the DecoArt Media range.

And finally I decorated them with metal embellishments.

I had forgotten about the strips of metal that I bought at the Version Scrap show in Paris way back when.

And the mini bottle tops with the letters I got this year from Hobby Lobby.

All products are from the DecoArt range.
