Fresh Take: Marvel Characters as Chinese Art

The latest Marvel fan-art to surface has a cultural twist, as an artist from Hong Kong named Tik Ka has taken the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — primarily those who are set to be featured in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War — and painted them in the style of ancient Chinese art.

As you can see, the results are spectacular. You could totally see these Avengers fitting in perfectly in an ancient Chinese opera, or showing up on a vase you’d buy on a trip to Beijing. Included among the characters in this series are Captain America, Iron Man, War Machine, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Hawkeye, the Vision, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, and Civil War absentee Avengers Hulk and Thor. And seemingly just for shiggles, the artist has included Marvel’s most recent blockbuster action star Deadpool as well. Sure, why not?

Humor: Jessica Jone Pun

I didn't notice this line from Netflix's Jessica Jone series until Tumblr pointed it out twenty times in under an hour on my dash.  Poor David Tennant.

Video: HISHE does Fantastic Four

20th Century Fox's reboot of Fantastic Four franchise is perhaps the single most disappointing film of the last decade (you know, after we recovered from the body blow that was M. Night Shyamalan's career).

The new adaptation of Marvel’s first family was a sloppy mess that was so bad it wasn't even fun to laugh at.  It’s hard to find many redeeming qualities in this movie, especially with a finale that makes no sense at all, brought about by a villain who has no real motivation or depth, fighting some of the most boring iterations of superheroes ever seen on film, despite being played by some of the brightest young stars in Hollywood.  The honest trailer does suggest a silver lining, though.  A making-of featturette about the production would be fascinating.

Fan Film: Captain America 3: Nazi Zombies

You’ve got to check out this ultra-violent and blood-filled stop-motion animated LEGO short film called "Captain America 3: Nazi Zombies." It was created by Youtube user Forrestfire101 (aka Forrest Whaley), and it’s just as awesome as you hoped a film with this title would be.

It starts off with Captain America riding his motorcycle through a German city occupied by the Nazis. He ends up hitting a landmine that explodes, and he is knocked unconscious until nightfall. When he wakes up he finds himself surrounded by Nazi zombies he must battle to survive!

This needs to be adapted into a live action film ASAP!

Fresh Take: Marvel Boys

"MARVEL BOYS" by Seoul, Korea-based Song Hojong

South Korean graphic designer Song Hojong has created a fun series of icons called ‘Marvel Boys’, featuring male superheroes and villains from the Marvel Universe.  Interestingly, his icons all share a similar shape and style. They are made with clean lines, geometric shapes and vibrant colors, with each character expressing a comical, exasperated look.  Song has been a huge fan of Marvel comics since his introduction to the X-Men movies, and wanted to portray the superheroes in a consistent style. He plans to make a similar series featuring DC characters.

Mash-Up: DC / Marvel Mash-Ups

DC/Marvel Mashed Up Heroes & Villians by Eric Guzman

Eric Guzman has some great DC and Marvel animated-style illustrations on his DeviantArt page, but his recent mash-ups really caught our eye. He combined the general costume ideas for two character to create something unique.  It reminds me of that DC / Marvel cross-over from the nineties.  Some of these were only natural, like combining Shazaam and Thor, but a few of them made me think, like the Mr. Fries / Doc Oct pairing.
