Short Film: ADAM: The Mirror

District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp of Oats Studios has teamed up with Unity to create the next installments of their ADAM franchise.  The first was ADAM: The Mirror, a follow-up to the original sci-fi short film ADAM from 2016. The magnificent short, created in real-time using the Unity game engine, follows an “amnesiac hero as he discovers a clue about what and who he is.” The next chapter will arrive soon.
"Oats Studios brings to life the next chapter in the Adam story, made in real-time using Unity. Join our amnesiac hero as he discovers a clue about what and who he is. The next chapter arrives soon."

Toys: Little Batman

Little Batman by  Luis Gomez-Guzman

"Little Batman" by Madrid, Spain-based  Luis Gomez-Guzman

Check out this great "Little Batman" 3D sculpt created by artist Luis Gomez-Guzman. The piece was inspired by Alberto Varanda's character illustration, which you can see below. This is a fun character design, and I like how the 3D sculpt turned out.

Featurette: Bringing Chappie to Life

Whether you love Neill Blomkamp’s CHAPPiE or hate it, it's hard not to be impressed by the film's visual effects.  In this featurette from WIRED, we get a glimpse inside the CGI animation that transformed Sharlto Copley into a robot.

Astonishingly, CHAPPiE’s animations weren’t accomplished through the use of motion capture, but rather, hand animated around the actors’ movements. Actors donned GoPro cameras to capture their viewpoint and surroundings, which then provided the point-of-view footage seen from each robot.

After each live scene was shot, animators went to work painstakingly painting the actors from the frame and replacing them with their robotic avatars.  Blomkamp shot most of the film on real sets, eschewing green-screen work in favor of encouraging actors to interact with their environments as much as possible.

The technique is more reminiscent of the methods used in classics like Who Framed Roger Rabbit – in which real-world props and interactions were maintained, than modern cinematic blockbusters like Avatar.  It seems to me that this is a large part of what makes Blomkamp's work seem so much more real and gritty than other science fiction films.
"Neill Blomkamp's new dystopian sci-fi thriller "Chappie" stars a fully digital A.I. robot as the title character, acted out by Sharlto Copley. Mike Seymour goes behind the scenes of the CG robots."

Fan Film: Iron Man Mark Z

If you loved watching the Iron Man suitcase armor deploy in the race track scene of Iron Man 2, you're in for a treat.   In this fan-made animation sequence, Tony Stark (with his eerily accurate computer-generated Robert Downey Jr. face) has to suit up quickly when a missile locks onto his car.

Anthony McGrath and Mark Cushley animated IRON MAN Mk Z to celebrate the release of Iron Man 3, and they're currently working on a second action sequence featuring the Hulkbuster armor.  I'll be subscribing to McGrath's channel to see what comes next.
"Tony Stark comes under attack from the Ten Rings & deploys his new armour."

Short Film: Abiogenesis

In the award-winning CGI 2011 short film Abiogenesis, a mysterious mechanical device lands on an uncolonized planet and harnesses its natural resources to bring life to a once desolate planet.  It's a visually spectacular piece with a message that's far more optimistic than most modern science fiction movies can no longer muster.
"In this breathtaking science fiction spectacle, a strange mechanical device lands on a desolate world and uses the planet to undergo a startling transformation, that has profound implications for an entire galaxy."

I'd really love to see this series expanded with Jake as Robin, Princess Bubblegum as Barbara Gordan's Batgirl, Marceline the Vampire Queen as Harley Quinn, and Cinnamon Bun as Killer Croc.

Short Film: Dysco

"Dysco" directed by Simon Russell

Dysco is an animated science fiction film about a dystopian future in which the world is monitored by an ungodly number of cameras and drones, and thought crime is closely monitored.

The world of Dysco is highly detailed.  Everything has a reason for existing.  The lampposts have solar panels and anti-climb spikes to stop interference with the cameras and the graffiti references various hacker movements, such as Lulsec and Anonymous.  Russell modeled his 3D environments on photographs of London.

Video: Budavár Visszavétele 3D

"Budavár visszavétele 3D" by Budapest, Hungary-based Zsolt Ekho Farkas

Zsolt Ekho Farkas recreated Benczúr Gyula's 19th-century painting "Budavár Visszavétele" as a 3D model using eight million-polygons.  This three minute video explores his re-creation, revealing some of its fine details by playing with the video's depth of field.  Unlike other paintings that have had motion added to them, the only thing animated in this re-creation of the painting is the smoke.

Short Film: The Gate

"The Gate" directed by Matt Westrup of Joyrider Films

In The Gate, a new drug is transforming people into monsters.  While it sounds like an anime series,  Westrup does a fantastic job giving the whole concept a real world flavor.  The film only took four days to shoot, but it took another four years to complete the realistic VFX.  Westrup is currently working on a full feature film version of the concept for Wayfare Entertainment.

Short Film: Lead Me

Lead Me directed by Omar Meradi

Developed by Omar Meradi as a personal project over the course of a few years, Lead Me is a visually delicate piece about all the different kinds of little monsters that lurk in the nooks and crannies of our reality when we're not looking. Using a mixture of different mediums, the short is abstract but strangely moving, largely thanks to the soaring score by Doug Kaufman.
