Video: Apple Watch Musical

Musician Jonathan Mann summed up the highlights of Apple’s big iPhone 6 and Apple Watch reveal with a musical version of the event called “Apple Watch: The Musical.” The song is the 2,078th in Mann’s “Song a Day” project where he records and releases one new song every day.  Download this song from Bandcamp.

Video: The Apple Watch

Comedian Jack Douglas parodied the launch of the Apple Watch, highlighting some of the "best" features of the device and explaining that "Apple Watch" is secretly an acronym.  Clearly, we must all have one right now!  (Or five, so that we can make them dance.)

Tech: MakerBot 3D Scanner

The Microfactory is now available on Kickstarter. US$4,500

Microfactory isn't just a 3D printer – it's a workshop in a box and yet another step in the evolution of 3D-printing technology.  The Microfactory is a 3D printer, a milling machine, and an etching machine all rolled up in one.  It can print in four colors simultaneously.  It comes with a variety of milling head.  Plus, the company is currently in the process of upgrading the machine to cut steel.  And all of it is done at a whisper.  It's billed as "the world's first machine shop in a box," but basically, it's the holy grail for "makers."
"The Microfactory project began one year ago when four friends, longtime members of an independent maker space in Somerville, Massachusetts called Artisans Asylum, came together to create a better prototyping and machining tool....one that was easy to use, self-contained, and capable of a truly impressive list of tasks. They independently financed the development and testing of five full versions of the Microfactory, resulting in the exceptional product featured here. The Microfactory was entirely conceived, designed and built by people who have spent their lives around machines, who wanted to make something truly revolutionary and highly usable for makers everywhere."

Tech: 3D Printer Photo Booth

image

Thanks to the Omote 3D pop-up photo booths from Japanese creative studio PARTY popping up around Tokyo’s stylish Harajuku district, folks out painting the town red will soon be able to commemorate their outings with 3D printed figurines, rather than the traditional American photo booths. The new booths feature 3D scans that only require a subject to stand still for 15 minutes. The result is a 3D figurine available in sizes ranging from four to eight inches. What’s being called the world’s first 3D printing photo booth is set to open for a limited time at the exhibition space EYE OF GYRE in Harajuku from November 24 to January 14, 2013.

This monster of a device is officially the worlds largest Corkscrew. It was created by a mechanical sculptor called Rob Higgs of ONEOFONEHUNDRED LIMITED, who launched the device with an unveiling by the Prince Albert of Monaco. Using hundreds of bronzed metal springs, gears and other parts, this incredible machine uncorks and pours a bottle of wine with Rube Goldberg-worthy complexity.

Tech: Instaprint

Instaprint is a small photo printer designed to print Instagram photos tagged with either a specific location or hashtag. The printers use Wi-Fi to connect to Instagram, printing relevant photos moments after they are posted. The printers can even be daisy-chained together for higher volume printing. Brooklyn-based interactive agency BREAKFAST created Instaprint back in 2011 as a proof-of-concept. They are now raising funds on Kickstarter to develop Instaprint into a consumer product.

Tech: Art-O-Meter

Art-O-Meter by Marcelo Coelho

Art-O-Meter is a device that measures the quality of an art piece. It bases its evaluation on the amount of time that people spend in front of an artwork compared to the total time of exhibition. The measurements are graphically represented by comments and a 5-star rating system.

Without the interaction of a viewer, the Art-O-Meter will register time like a regular clock. However, when a user enters the area covered by its motion sensor, a second timer is triggered and it will count time as the viewer observes the artwork.
