Street Art: Lucasfilm Sidewalk Art Fest

Last September, employees from Lucasfilm, ILM, and other tenants of the Letterman Digital Arts Center in San Francisco took to the campus sidewalks with chalk for the Lucasfilm Sidewalk Art Festival 2014, an annual event which attracts teams of 2-4 members competing for prizes and the glory of out-chalking their colleagues. The contest often inspires a bounty hunter’s haul of Star Wars-related artwork, and last year’s event was no exception.  The Calvin and Hobbes piece was a particular favorite of mine.  Read more about the festival at the Official Star Wars Tumblr.

Typography: Dangerdust Chalk Boards

Two seniors at the Columbus College of Art and Design have been sneaking into classrooms one night per week and creating incredible chalkboard art featuring famous quotations. Going by the moniker Dangerdust, they can be found on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Behance.  I can't decide on my favorite, the Neil Degrasse Tyson or the Calvin & Hobbes... or how they bear to erase them.

To promote this week's DVD release of the third season of Game of Thrones in the UK, HBO commissioned an enormous depiction of The Wall across London’s Bishops Square.  Measuring 10 x 7.5 meters, this piece is allegedly the first of its kind to appear to be 3D from more than one angle.

Video: Pardon My Dust

"Pardon My Dust " directed by Adriel de la Torre
Chalk art by Peter Han

Concept artist Peter Han discusses how he achieves his calculated art of illustrating, which he calls "Dynamic Sketching."  The process involves working in an impermanent medium (such as chalk) in order to make the creative process more fluid and hopefully vanquish an artists' timidity for trying new things.

Stum is well-known for her brilliant ongoing series of “interactive 3D chalk art street paintings.” She began street painting in 1998 and is still, to this day, going strong. In 2006, Tracy’s massive piece, “The Last Supper,” won her a Guinness World Record for the largest chalk painting by an individual.
