Save Time Tip of the Week # 4 - STT

Image
I make a lot of soup and I have two methods of saving time. 1. I keep organic vegetable broth in my cabinet or in my refrigerator to turn any soup into a tasty dish by adding it to the ingredients. 2. Make up a strong chicken broth or vegetable broth and freeze in one pint containers.  When you are making a new soup, pour one of these into the new soup and presto, you have flavor.  The key is to boil the first soup down quite a bit so that it is strong enough to have an effect on the new soup. Use your frozen broth in sauces, gravies or to cook vegetables in.  A delicious way to save time and eat well.  Lined to Tip of The Day Thursday

STT    Keep dried spices on hand, even though,  you use fresh spices, most of the time. There are times, we are too busy or too tired to clean and chop fresh spices and rather than skip the flavor, grab a bottle of the dried spice and use it. Also, make up ahead of time spice mixes, your chili mix, garam masala, curry or any that you use often.  You will be thankful, each time, you do not have to put these together.  If you do not want to purchase spice bottles, get some of the plastic with tight fitting lids in very small sizes and use that.  Make sure to label it.

Of course, this takes time but it does diminish the actual recipe time and for me, that is huge.  It means, that I can enter my kitchen and mix my ingredients and put it, in the oven, while I am eating breakfast, getting ready for work or doing the wash.  This is particularly good with baked goods and I end up with a treat, on the spot.  A great way to start the day. I guess this is more division of time than cutting minutes but it works well from the psychological aspect.  When I start to bake, as an example, I am re...

As I develop this blog, I will be looking for tips to shorten cooking times and recipes that make life a bit easier, in order that they take less time.  My aim  is to post one each week.  Please send me your best tips for time saving in the kitchen. This week's STT (Save Time Tip) is to cut your vegetables into smaller pieces before cooking them.  Although, it is faster to cut them into large chunks, cooking time is cut, when they are smaller.
