Royal de San Remo, creadas por el gran Gio Ponti

a mediados del siglo pasado.

Como Ponti decía, el diseño conforma la cultura,

esta origina los valores de la sociedad que a su

vez condicionan el futuro.

2144. Helsinki Lastenlinna

 

Dear Sophie,

The Lastenlinna Children's Hospital that can be

seen in the bottom of this vintage postcard was

a combination of the Functionalism of the 1930s

and the National Romanticism of the 1940s. The

complex combines a high-rise section with a 

curved four-story wards building. 

The complex is also beautifully linked to adjacent 

Arvo Ylpö Park and Kirjailijanpuisto next to it. 

Finally it is worth mentioning that at the opposite end 

of these parks where the triangular site can be seen 

at the top of the picture the remarkable Alvar

Aalto's National Pensions Institute was built some

years later in 1956.

2017. Bailey House, Pacific Palisades

 

Hola Paco,

Esta es la casa Bailey que Richard Neutra construyó

en Pacific Palisades y que pasó a ser designada como

la número 20 en el programa de 36 casos ejemplares de

diseño de casas que John Entenza y su revista Arts & 

Architecture promovieron en Los Angeles entre 1945 

y 1966. Arquitectos como Eero Saarinen, Ray y Charles

Eames, Pierre Koenig o el propio Richard Neutra entre

otros construyeron casas que en la mayoría de los casos 

fueron fotografiadas por el mítico Julius Shulman.

Dear Henrieta,

The industrial and housing garden city in Bat'ovany 

was the last BATA company development built by 

architect and urban designer Jirí Voženílek before 

WWII. The center of the city is dominated by a 

large catholic church that can be seen to the right 

and was designed by another great architect: 

Vladimír Karfík.

La fotografía de esta postal antigua muestra un escorzo casi completo del edificio de 15 plantas que la pionera firma Cuéllar Serrano Gómez levantó en Bogotá en 1948. Se da la circunstancia de que en la segunda mitad de la década de los 40 Gabriel Serrano viajó por Brasil y tuvo ocasión de conocer y dejarse influir por la arquitectura de Oscar Niemeyer.

559. Edificio de la Facultad de Ingenieria. Montevideo, Mayo 28 de 1938

Querido Eugenio,

Julio Vilamajó junto con Oscar Niemeyer formaron parte
del selecto grupo de arquitectos que proyectaron el
edificio de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York. La
Facultad de Ingenieria de Montevideo es la obra mas
importante de Vilamajó y fue contruida entre 1939 y
1948. Este edificio tiene como claro referente la Escuela
Bauhaus en Dessau. Sin embargo Vilamajó planteó en
esta facultad la idea de "integracion de las artes",
concepto muy del gusto de este magnifico arquitecto.

Dear Bob,

When questioned by V.C. Morris
about the omission of storefront
windows on the facade, Frank Lloyd
Wright replied:
"We are not going to dump your
beautiful merchandise on the street,
but create an arch-tunnel of glass, into
which the passers-by may look and be
enticed. As they penetrate further into
the entrance, seeing the shop inside
with its spiral ramp and tables set with
fine china and crystal, they will suddenly
push open the door, and you've got
them!"
