Although the recipient of the third Annual Award 

offered by the Architectural Institute of Japan, the Reader's Digest Tokyo headquarters office building 

was wistfully demolished in 1963.

Dear David

When built in 1889 the Machine Hall became the most
important metal-and-glass structure of the 19th century.
This magnificent 427-meter long structure had 18 steel
arch frames 45 meters high spanned about 115 meters.
It was considered one of the most magnificent symbols of
the Industrial Revolution. In 1906 the City Council decided
to demolish the building to make room for the Champs de
Mars.

1010. Hotel Don Pancho, Benidorm

Querida Olga,

Este hotel en Benidorm es obra del gran
arquitecto alicantino Juan Antonio Garcia
Solera. Perteneciente a la segunda generacion
de posguerra de arquitectos españoles
modernos Garcia Solera fue contemporaneo
de Corrales, Molezun, Garcia de Paredes,
Bohigas, Mila, Saenz de Oiza, La Hoz
o Javier Carvajal entre otros.
En este hotel el arquitecto combina
magistralmente la funcionalidad y la plasticidad
del edificio curvando expresivamente la fachada.
Con este sencillo gesto consigue suavizar la
presencia impositiva del volumen principal y
dotar al mismo tiempo a todas las habitaciones
de optimo soleamiento y excelentes vistas al mar.

Dear Roy,

German architect Frederick Romberg was born in 

China and trained as an architect in Switzerland. He established his professional practice in Australia where 

he lived for more than 50 years until his death in 1992.
His masterpiece Stanhill Flats located in South

Melbourne, Victoria, was designed in 1943 and 

postponed due to the World War II until it was finsihed 

in 1950. Although this building is highly functionalist quickly became an architectural local landmark because of its wonderful expressionist design that resembles a colossal ship with its cantilevered balconies.

He leido en algun sitio que cuando se proyecto la 

Catedral del Sagrado Corazon de Argel los arquitectos

se inspiraron en el Evangelio de San Juan. Por sus

formas escultoricas me gusta pensar que de alguna

manera esta simboliza la escatologia como accion

(transformarse en lo que Dios espera de nosotros) 

contrariamente a la escatologia del conocimiento

(esperar la intervencion divina)
