Further Sapphire news

I have now been to a screening of THE SAPPHIRES, and while I cannot write a review yet, (I'm sure there will be some from Cannes though), I will tell you that this film is an absolute delight.  It is a film that is for all ages, there aren't many out there, and it is funny and heartwarming with some great songs and acting.  For me, the highlight was Chris O'Dowd.  Wow, totally in love now, and you will be also.  He is such a standout in this film that you can't imagine anyone else having his role.  I have been told he will hit Melbourne to promo the film around the time of the MIFF screening, so will be hunting him down then!

The Sapphires

We are hugely excited about THE SAPPHIRES' world premiere at Cannes Film Festival this Saturday. It has also been announced that THE SAPPHIRES will open the Melbourne International Film Festival on August 2!
I'm tipping this will be THE Australian film of the year!

(for more on this amazing movie here or here)

The Sapphires is set in the heady days of the late ‘60s when four young, talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, are discovered by an unlikely talent scout. Plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia's answer to The Supremes, The Sapphires grasp the chance of a lifetime when they're offered their first real gig - entertaining the troops in Vietnam. For the girls, a whole new world of friendship, love, war and soul opens before them.
The Sapphires
is an adaptation of the hugely successful Australian stage musical of the same name, and is inspired by the remarkable true story of writer Tony Briggs' mother and her family. It stars AFI Award winner Deborah Mailman and Australian singer Jessica Mauboy alongside Bridesmaids actor Chris O'Dowd, and features an unbeatable soul music soundtrack. Destined to be a smash Australian hit, The Sapphires boasts a great story full of love, laughter and tears, set against the backdrop of the social upheaval of the 1960s, with wonderful performances from the entire cast. The Sapphires

These gorgeous girls are the The Sapphires. They are starring in the movie of the same name and have just wrapped up filming in Sydney and Vietnam.
'The Sapphires' began life as a stage play written by Tony Briggs, inspired by the story of his mother Laurel Robinson and aunt Lois Peeler, who performed in a quartet for troops during the Vietnam War.

Deborah Mailman (from the original production), Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell star as The Sapphires and the film also boasts the talents of the delightful Chris O'Dowd. (Bridesmaids).

Having seen the production when it debuted in Melbourne, I can promise that this will be an absolute must-see.  The Sapphires will shimmy and sing their way into your hearts with the added bonus of a rock'n 60's soundtrack!  Can't wait.

The Sapphires

'The Sapphires' is a feel good musical inspired by a remarkable true story about the creator's mother and aunt's showbiz careers (writer Tony Briggs!)that is about to be made into a feature film.

Set in the heady days of 1968, Four talented singers, from a remote Aboriginal mission, are discovered by an unlikely talent scout . Plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia’s answer to The Supremes, The Sapphires grasp the chance of a lifetime when they’re offered their first real gig – entertaining the troops in Vietnam. For the girls, a whole new world of sex, war, politics and soul opens before them.

Casting thus far includes Jessica Mauboy and Deborah Mailman, and as of today joining them is the very cute Chris O'Dowd. You know the cute Irish policeman from BRIDESMAIDS.

The film will start shooting shortly.
