THE RUNAWAYS - REVIEW
BY DANCING IN BEAUMONT
The Runaways is an interesting film! I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it and I wasn't bored by it, in fact I love a rock bio, but I think the film just didn't quite give me enough. The story is based on a book penned by Cherie Currie, so the film is ultimately based on her story, but as much as I loved the portrayal of the rock and roll lifestyle, I felt like i wanted more depth about the characters and how they felt and what they went through, rather than just the obvious sex and drugs scenarios that were clearly a staple of touring bands in the 70's!
The film maker is a first time director who has come from a largely music video background, which you can tell. There are some pretty cool shots, but then you are wondering in which direction she wants to take the film. Is it an arty indie film or a mainstream rock bio? I may sound prudish saying this but the opening scene of menstrual blood drops on the pavement didn't exactly warm me to the film, so it had a bit of work from there to get me in!
Kristen Stewart is good, but i'm afraid I could still see some Bella up on the screen. She's still a bit pouty and moody, but I imagine she was fairly well guided in her characterisation of Joan Jett as she was a producer of the film. Dakota Fanning does a great job as Cherie Currie. she is actually very believable as the lead singer who has a fairly fast downward spiral. I would have liked a little bit more information about the other girls in the band, but I guess there's not time for everything. The characterisation of Kim Fowley, the group's producer/manager/creator is creepily portrayed by Michael Shannon, who from what I have read, nailed the guy! Pretty scary dude!!! (pictured below with Cherie in more current times!) Riley Keogh, Elvis's granddaughter is solid in her first real acting gig playing Cherie's sister. And who should play her mum, but Tatum O'Neal, a surprise to say the least!
If you were ever a fan of the Runaways, you should definitely see it. If you love romantic comedies, then don't see it! It's not a film for all, case in point, Cool Rider loved it, and I just liked it!
Check out Cherie's chainsaw art at the following link!

Sadly, Sandy, the drummer, who was actually a really likeable character in the film, died a few years ago of cancer.

Love a Gilmore Link
It's tenuous but I still like it. Scout Taylor-Compton who played Clara Forester (Dean's little sister) on Gilmore Girls co-stars in The Runaways as Lita Ford the lead guitarist! Cool!

While we're On The Topic...
Here's the official trailer for 'The Runaways' - the movie of the band.
And here are the real Runaways....

Rock On!
I'm loving the cover art for the soundtrack to The Runaways, 'Cherry Bomb' being their signature tune. May just buy it for that as I'm not sure that the covers will live up to the originals. Joan Jett is on high rotation at our place at the moment due to my son enjoying rocking out to 'Bad Reputation'!
The tracks on the album will probably ensure that it sells well. With songs by David Bowie, Sex Pistols, Joan Jett and several other rock icons, how could it go wrong?
Roxy Roller - Nick Gilder
The Wild One - Suzi Quatro
It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World - MC5
Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
Cherry Bomb - Dakota Fanning
Hollywood - The Runaways
California Paradise - Dakota Fanning
You Drive Me Wild - The Runaways
Queens of Noise - Dakota Fanning & Kristen Stewart
Dead End Justice - Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning
I Wanna Be Your Dog - The Stooges
I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are (Live) - The Runaways
Pretty Vacant - Sex Pistols
Don’t Abuse Me - Joan Jett
.
My favourite Runaways song - 'School Days' hasn't made it on but you can't have everything.

Random Kristen
I love this photo of Kristen Stewart and am looking forward to seeing her portrayal of Joan Jett. Rather perfect casting me thinks. Apparently they have been hanging out together so Kristen can get her just right. Now that would be an experience.
L. and I watched Kristen's film 'Adventureland' the other night which is well worth a viewing. She, of course, played an angsty teenager and we did comment that we would like to now see her play against type - maybe a musical or an Amanda Bynes type comedy?? I really can't imagine it and maybe that's going to be her biggest problem. She won't be a truly great actress until she smiles through a WHOLE film.

The Heir To The Throne?
While looking at photos of Kristen Stewart on the set of 'Runaways', the film about
Joan Jett and her band, I noticed one of the other band members....
.
Does anyone else recognise her?
It's Riley Keough!!! Still looking blank?
ELVIS'S GRANDDAUGHTER!!!!!!
(I'm very excited) I can't believe they haven't mentioned this bit of casting genius. Maybe she's incognito! Ha.
