Shelley Duvall, one of the most iconic movie stars of the ’70s and ’80s, died on Thursday from complications related to diabetes. She was 75.

Duvall got her start working with Robert Altman, with her first acting role coming in his 1970 film Brewster McCloud. This sparked a longtime collaboration and friendship, with Duvall starring in other Altman films like Nashville, 3 Women and Popeye.

Her work with Altman led to being cast in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining as Wendy Torrance, her most recognizable role. In addition to her film work, Duvall hosted and created the children’s series Faerie Tale Theatre and Bedtime Stories

In 2002, Duvall decided to retire from acting. Following the attention from The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2021 cover story on her reclusive life in Texas Hill Country post-Hollywood, the actress returned to the screen in the 2023 independent horror film The Forest Hills.

Shelley Duvall never wanted to be an actor, and for all of her onscreen triumphs, the harrowing tribulations that went along with them and the toll they took perhaps prove she found herself in the wrong shoes all along. Not many people fall into the profession of acting, and that alone makes her career almost inexplicable but not nearly as mystifying as what followed when she plunged into the rabbit hole of stardom.

It was Shelley Duvall’s destiny to become most widely known for a single film or maybe for a single poster image from it, shockingly and cartoonishly explicit. The image certainly did justice to her intensity and capacity for utterly unselfconscious performance, but said nothing about the subtlety, strength, wit and unfakable superstar quality that otherwise marked her work.

Shelley Duvall and I crossed paths at the moment I needed her most.

It was late 2020. COVID lockdowns, George Floyd, media layoffs — everything sucked, and it wasn’t getting better. I adopted a French Bulldog puppy to help me cope and named him Otto. Otto would scream every night until I brought him into bed with me, then poop in my duvet.

Shelley Duvall has returned to the big screen with a cameo role in director Scott Goldberg’s The Forest Hills, which also stars Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez and Dee Wallace, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Duvall had break out roles in the 1970s in Robert Altman’s Brewster McCloud and Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, where she briefly, yet memorably played a Rolling Stone reporter, before appearing in the role of Wendy Torrance alongside Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining. This marks the first role in 20 years for the actor, who last year spoke about her legacy in a profile for THR.

“You’re a fucking murderer, Rico!”

That is the first line of dialogue fans of Shelley Duvall can hear her speak after a 20-year absence from the screen, in a new trailer for The Forest Hills, which The Hollywood Reporter is debuting exclusively.

The actress, 73, who captivated audiences with idiosyncratic characters like Millie Lammoreaux from 1977’s Three Women and Wendy Torrance in 1980’s The Shining, has returned to acting with a surprise cameo in the indie horror film, written and directed by Scott Goldberg.

After leaving L.A., and making only one public appearance since, on a widely condemned mental illness episode of 'Dr. Phil,' the complicated actress sat down for a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter about her legacy and the trauma of the Stanley Kubrick film.

Out on the tranquil banks of a river in Texas Hill Country, Shelley Duvall pulls up in a white Toyota 4Runner. Her favorite place to sit is in the driver’s seat. It’s also the only place to sit: The rest of the car is filled from floor to roof with a crush of acquisitions, including a bucket of plastic silverware, a jar of Green Giant sliced mushrooms and a bouquet of silk roses. Duvall, 71, passes entire days in her car, chatting with locals and snacking on takeout food. She shares a home in the area with Dan Gilroy, 76, a member of the early Madonna band Breakfast Club. Gilroy was briefly romantically linked to the singer but has been with Duvall since 1989, the two having fallen in love while co-starring in the Disney Channel movie Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme. Produced by Duvall, it featured an all-star cast (including Duvall’s former boyfriend Paul Simon) and has become an abiding cultural touchstone among millennials.

The actress, known for her role in ‘The Shining’ and as the visionary producer of a 1980s children’s series, returns to the big screen after two decades out of the public eye

Had her 2016 appearance on the controversial Dr. Phil show not been so alarming, Shelley Duvall, 73, could have just announced that she was returning to the big screen like any other talented actress coming back to Hollywood after a hiatus. It would have been similar to Cameron Diaz, who spent time away for a few years to focus on her family, and Debra Winger, who was fed up with a system that discards women after a certain age. But Duvall’s case is different. The last time we saw her on screen, she appeared haggard and was spouting disjointed ideas; she claimed that Robin Williams was still alive and “shape-shifting,” and that the sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood was threatening her.
