Life’s Work: An Interview with Mikhail Baryshnikov

by Alison Beard
May 2010

Mikhail Baryshnikov began studying ballet at age nine in his native Riga, Latvia, then part of the Soviet Union. By his early twenties, he had been described by one critic as “the most perfect dancer I have ever seen” and was the star of the famed Kirov Ballet. In 1974 he defected to Canada, then settled in the U.S. at the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director. He left in 1989 to cofound a modern dance company and take on film, theater, and TV roles. He is now the artistic director of the Baryshnikov Arts Center and, at age 63, still performs.

The expressionist aesthetics of Egon Schiele’s nudes should make for riveting dance, but Shobana Jeyasingh’s production is a bit too beige

I

t’s easy to see why the work of Austrian painter Egon Schiele (1890-1918) is tempting choreographic catnip. The expressionist aesthetics of Schiele’s nudes – emotionally charged and attenuated lines, tense dynamics and oddly contorted poses – seem like a natural fit for contemporary dance. Despite this felicitous figural match, Shobana Jeyasingh’s Staging Schiele doesn’t always make for riveting dance.

Actress, dancer and coyote feeder: introducing indie actress Margaret Qualley

Margaret Qualley is hardly your typical celebrity offspring. Andie MacDowell’s daughter tells Johanna Thomas-Corr about facing down her demons, starring with Ryan Gosling — and being the film world’s new indie darling...

It’s a sweltering hot day in Los Angeles and, in a bohemian café in the understated neighbourhood of Echo Park, Margaret Qualley is telling me how she spends her free time. ‘We call it coyote hunting but actually it’s more like coyote nurturing,’ says the 22-year-old actress and model of her habit of cruising around Hollywood with her sister, Rainey, and feeding the city’s prairie wolves. ‘My sister and I are pretty dorky, so we drive around at night in her car listening to old Disney songs and feed the coyotes cans of wet cat food, which I’m sure is a terrible idea. Meanwhile, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty showtunes are playing in the background. It’s a big night for us,’ she laughs.
