VALIS / KITTY KITTY s/t Split CD 1998

Discogs

Artist Biography by Steve Huey

Dust In 1996, following the final Screaming Trees album, Dust, bassist Van Conner formed a loud, spaced-out, psychedelic metal band called Valis, with himself on lead vocals and guitar. When it became clear that the Trees' hiatus was likely to become permanent, Conner focused his attention on his onetime side project, which took its name from a Philip K. Dick novel. The remainder of the group also had a strong Seattle pedigree: brother and guitarist Patrick Conner had been playing in Kitty Kitty; bassist Kurt Danielson had been a member of Tad; and Dan Peters had drummed for several Seattle notables, including the Fastbacks, Love Battery, and his full-time gig, Mudhoney. They started gigging around the Northwest in 1997, and the following year, they released a split EP with Kitty Kitty on the Man's Ruin label. Peters subsequently returned to Mudhoney, and was replaced by Kitty Kitty drummer Sean Hollister. As the members took time to focus on other projects, Valis fell by the wayside for a time, but kicked back into gear in 2001, when they added keyboard and guitar-synth player Wes Weresch and signed with the Swedish label Luna Sound. In 2002, they issued their first widely available album, Vast Active Living Intelligence System, by which time Adrian Makins had replaced Danielson on bass.

GARDENER New Dawning Time 1999

Artist Biography by

The brainchild of Seaweed's Aaron Stauffer (vocals/guitars) and the Screaming Trees' Van Conner (guitars, keyboards, drums), Gardener's origins date back to the late '80s, when Stauffer missed a show by the Screaming Trees on his 16th birthday. He began calling the band on a regular basis, inviting them to play with him; eventually, he and the band became friends. Meanwhile, Stauffer formed Seaweed with drummer Alan Cage, bassist John Atkins, and guitarist Clint Werner.
As the Seattle scene gained worldwide prominence, Seaweed and the Trees found themselves touring together frequently. During a 1996 U.K. tour, the two groups finally collaborated, writing two songs that would appear on Gardener's 1999 debut album New Dawning Time. The new group added to their lineup when Conner recruited his brother Pat (sitar, drums) and friend Adrian Makins (bass, slide guitar).
Shortly after, Stauffer moved to North California to pursue a more rural, rugged life, penning more songs and incorporating more members -- including a tabla player and a flutist -- into Gardener. Their debut featured a more expansive, arranged sound than that of either the Screaming Trees or Seaweed, with flourishes of sitar, Mellotron, and flute rather than the charged rock sound of Gardener's parent bands.

SOLOMON GRUNDY Stone Soup and Other Stories

Biography

by Greg Prato

Solomon Grundy was a one-off side project that was led by Screaming Trees guitarist Van Connor. Screaming Trees used 1990 as a year of reassessment and to take a break from the tour-album-tour grind (throughout their history, friction has always reared its ugly head time and time again), and Connor used the time to record 11 of his original compositions, resulting in the outfit's self-titled release on the New Alliance label. Shortly after the album's release, Screaming Trees reunited once more and signed a major-label deal with Epic, effectively killing Connor's side-project almost as soon as it was born.
