I am puzzled as to why this comp is called "Grunge" Instinct when very little, if any of the bands are grunge. Red Red Meat and Shrimp Boat? Not grunge. Smashing Pumpkins? Perhaps.

Artist Biography by Jason Nickey

Orso is an experimental, folk-tinged band led by Rex's Phil Spirito, Red Red Meat's Brian Deck, and Califone's Ben Massarella. Featuring banjo-centered songs flushed out by non-traditional instruments such as typewriters and toilets, the band made its studio debut in 1999 with a self-titled album on Perishable Records. Long Time By, a much more focused effort, followed in 2000, and My Dreams Are Back and They Are Better Than Ever arrived four years later. Ask Your Neighbor........... marked the band's first effort for Contraphonic, a Chicago-based label, in 2008.

Shuffled from the deck of the Chicago folk-punk outfit Friends of Betty in 1990, the modern blues balladeers of Red Red Meat would provide a stunning counterpoint to the windy city's popular Material Issue/Urge Overkill glam-informed swagger. Tim Rutili (vocals, guitars) and Glynis Johnson (bass, vocals), both of founding members of Friends of Betty, along with new recruits Brian Deck (drums) and Crows guitarist Glenn Girard, released their first single, Snowball, in 1991. Internal conflict and personal struggles were already cropping up and threatening to implode the young band as they recorded their eponymous debut LP in 1992. » Read more

This came from my personal collection. At the time I was immersed deeply in the music scene and a music director for a college radio and radio station manager and peon at an indie record store where I could pretty much order anything I wanted. No regrets on this purchase which was pressed on red vinyl.
"This split single is the beginning of an open ended project. Red Red Meat and Number One Cup each started with the same recording of a distorted cowbell and built a song from that sonic foundation." Released on Flydaddy Records.
