Artist Biography

by Jason Ankeny

Chappaquiddick Skyline was the side project of singer/songwriter Joe Pernice, previously best known for fronting the alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys as well as its chamber-pop predecessor the Pernice Brothers. While earning his master's degree in creative writing and poetry from the University of Massachusetts, Pernice co-founded the Northampton-based Scuds in 1991, earning great critical acclaim for the heartbreaking lyrics and gorgeous melodies which distinguished albums like 1996's Massachusetts; seeking to move beyond the band's rustic minimalism, he formed the Pernice Brothers with sibling Bob to expand into lushly-orchestrated pop, issuing 1998's Overcome by Happiness to further critical fanfare. Chappaquiddick Skyline emerged from the Pernice Brothers' touring lineup and also featured bassist Thom Monahan, guitarist Peyton Pinkerton, keyboardist Laura Stein and drummer Mike Belitsky; their superb self-titled debut appeared on Sub Pop in early 2000.

Padellaro is a Massachusetts-based prep school alumnus (Philips Academy, Andover) who played bass with the alt country band the Scud Mountain Boys in the mid- '90s. His first album as King Radio, Mr. K Is Dead -- Go Home, was released on Tar Hut Records in 1998. He worked as a producer for such acts as the Pelicans and T.W. PERNICE BROTHERS Overcome By Happiness 1998

Artist Biography by

Massachusetts
Formed after the 1997 breakup of singer/songwriter Joe Pernice's alt-country group the Scud Mountain Boys, the Pernice Brothers did an about-face from the spare but well-crafted '70s country sound of their final album, Massachusetts, and came up with the lush, orchestrated pop of 1998's Overcome by Happiness. There were almost no traces of country left in Pernice's sound; instead, influences like Brian Wilson, the Left Banke, and Todd Rundgren seemed to be his main inspiration. The Pernice Brothers dug deeper into their journey into pop on their second LP, 2001's excellent The World Won't End, and to the end of the decade, they released a series of consistently strong albums, with 2006's Live a Little and 2010's Goodbye, Killer finding the group sounding less mannered and more straightforward. After nearly a decade spent pursuing other projects, the Pernice Brothers made an impressive return with 2019's Spread the Feeling.

SCUD MOUNTAIN BOYS Massachusetts 1996

Artist Biography by

The cult popularity of Uncle Tupelo and its spin-off groups Wilco and Son Volt opened the doors for what became an entirely new generation of musicians who grew up in the punk rock generation but found genuine connection with traditional country music -- especially as interpreted through Gram Parsons, who's more or less the granddaddy of country-rock. The Scud Mountain Boys -- Joe Pernice, Stephen Desaulniers, Bruce Tull, and Tom Shea -- clearly fit into this camp.
The band originally played electric rock & roll under the name the Scuds. Pernice, Desaulniers, and Tull formed the group in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1991, and they gained a respectable local following. But the bandmembers soon tired of hauling equipment around and found they much more enjoyed the after-show get-togethers playing acoustic country songs around the kitchen table at home to the stage. Finally they decided to haul the kitchen table to a club. Finding the response positive, they've stayed with the new format.

Pine Box
The band's debut album, Pine Box (originally just a cassette release), was recorded live around the kitchen table and featured slow, intensely quiet originals alongside covers of '70s pop-country songs such as "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" and "Please, Mr., Please." Their second album, Dance the Night Away -- which added a couple of rock songs from their Scuds days into the mix again -- came out on Chunk Records in 1995, and national interest in the band grew quickly. In early 1996 they were signed to Sub Pop, and the label released the band's third album in less than two years, Massachusetts.
Overcome by Happiness
It proved the band's last, however, although Pernice and his brother Bob soon recorded a new album, Overcome by Happiness. Billed under the name the Pernice Brothers, it appeared on Sub Pop in 1998. Many more followed over the next ten years, alongside solo Joe Pernice material under his own name as well as under the Chappaquiddick Skyline moniker. The Scud Mountain Boys reunited in 2012 and released a brand new collection of songs, Do You Love the Sun, the following year.
