OCTANT Shock-No-Par 1999

Discogs

Artist Biography by

Shock-No-Par
The Seattle-based group Octant is named for its third member, a robotic drummer created by singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist/inventor Matt Steinke. Also a member of Mocket and Satisfact, Steinke studied kinetic art and music at Evergreen State College and studied electronics after graduation. Wishing to combine all these disciplines, he began building the Octant, an automated collection of mallets bolted onto a drum kit; as it plays, it not only makes music but adds a visual element to the group's futuristic, appealingly off-kilter sound. Singers/keyboardist Tassy Zimmerman and clarinetist/turntablist Pierre Crutchfield are also a part of Octant's shows and albums. Octant's debut, Shock-No-Par, came in 1999 on the Up label. Car Alarms & Crickets followed a year later.

SATISFACT self titled 1997

Satisfact Review by Mike DaRonco

Don't let the shiny orange packaging fool you. The art work may resemble a band that grew up under the influence of the Pet Shop Boys or Erasure, but this is anything but dance club music. Rather, the sounds of Satisfact resemble more of a disturbed Devo if they were forced to live off Joy Division and Fugazi. In other words, the music is pretty moody in a pleasantly disturbing sort of way. Treated as a side band for Dave Schneider (Lync/Love as Laughter) and Matt Steinke (Mocket), Satisfact continue with their trademark sound of screechy guitar sounds, hypnotic keyboard effects, robotic rhythms and monotone vocals on their second full-length. Suave, laid-back and borderline poppy (but not in the obnoxiously happy sort of way), Satisfact have the ability to accomplish all of this without coming close to boring the listener to death. They even manage to successfully incorporate a theremin on the track "Demonstration" -- that alone is worth giving this record a good review.
