The Mummies Biography by Mark Deming

The once and future kings of budget rock, the Mummies did for garage rock what the New Bomb Turks did for punk: stripped it to the frame, made it as raunchy as it deserved to be, and reminded everyone what was cool and crazy about the stuff in the first place. Of course, while the New Bomb Turks were able to build a career out of their roots punk cross-breed, the Mummies achieved their greatest notoriety after they broke up, but it's difficult to imagine the rawest edge of the garage revival bands existing without the guiding influence of the gauze-wrapped foursome.

Formed in San Francisco, CA, in late 1988, the Mummies consisted of Larry Winther on guitar, Maz Kattuah on bass, Trent Ruane on organ and sax, and Russell Quan on drums; though it was sometimes difficult to tell just who was who since the band performed in mummy suits that made them appear to be wrapped from head to toe in Ace bandages. While the band found a home in the West Coast garage/surf revival scene alongside like-minded bands such as the Phantom Surfers and the Untamed Youth, the Mummies set out to be louder, cruder, and more obnoxious than anyone; bashing out frantic and primitive versions of such classics as "Justine" and "Shot Down" alongside middle-finger originals like "Your Ass (Is Next in Line)," "The Thing From Venus," and "Shut Yer Mouth" on cheap vintage gear rescued from pawn shops and garage sales. In 1990, the Mummies' first single appeared (on the band's own Pre-B.S. label), as did several 7"s on other labels followed, including Estrus, Planet Pimp, and Rekkids; eventually, the band's early singles were compiled on the LP The Mummies Play Their Own Records. (The album appeared on LP only; the Mummies made no secret of their antipathy for digital technology, emblazoning their slogan, "F*ck CDs," on the back covers of most of their records and refusing to release their material in the format, though this changed with the dawn of the 21st century.

In early 1991, the Mummies cut an album for Crypt Records, but the results sounded a bit too clean and tidy for the band's liking, and the album went unreleased (though the material was later pirated on the infamous Fuck the Mummies bootleg); later that year, they took another stab at capturing their lo-fi assault on tape, and the result was their first (and only) proper Mummies studio album, the gloriously obnoxious Never Been Caught. After extensive West Coast gigging, a tour of the Northwest with Thee Headcoats (garage icon Billy Childish called the Mummies his favorite American band) and a brief jaunt to the East Coast, the Mummies threw in the towel in January 1992, shortly before Never Been Caught came out. However, the group briefly reunited in 1993 when fellow San Franciscans Supercharger asked the Mummies to open for them on a tour of Europe; being big fans of Supercharger, the Mummies agreed, and made enough of an impression on European rock fans that they were persuaded to come back for a headlining tour in the Spring of 1994. Since then, Ruane, Kattuah, and Quan have all played with the Phantom Surfers, while Ruane has also worked with the Untamed Youth; Kattuah finds time to play in the Maybellines; and the busy Quan gigs with the Maybellines, the Bobbyteens, the Count Backwurds, and the Dukes of Hamburg. Larry Winther, meanwhile, has recorded with the Orange Peels.

THE BOBBYTEENS Fast Livin & Rock N Roll 1998

.

Artist Biography by

San Francisco trash rock supergroup the Bobbyteens bash out hormone-driven songs about boys, partying, and, well, boys again. The songs barely get past two minutes and the priority is rock & roll energy. Trash rock's practitioners and fans want their music stripped to the raw, and power chords, 4/4 time, and a catchy chorus are the limited but potent repertoire of the Bobbyteens; a demented version of Chuck Berry played with amateurish gusto. To the non-fan, music anything like the budget rock of the Bobbyteens would sound painful with its sloppy guitar playing, off-key singing, and general disdain for production value. While those critiques are valid, they ignore the honesty of misfit white kids mangling R&B. Bands like Supercharger, the Mummies, and the Trashwomen gloriously proved that anyone could in fact make rock music if they had enough heart and something to say. The story of the Bobbyteens starts with the Mummies and the Trashwomen. Drummer Russell Quan is a San Francisco legend playing in not only the Mummies (who once recorded an album with a boom-box) but the Count Backwards and the Phantom Surfers. Sassy singer Tina Lucchesi and bassist Danielle Pimm made up two-thirds of the Trashwomen and have also done time in the Count Backwards. With the demise of those bands and the addition of guitarist Lisa Schenberg, the Bobbyteens were born in 1996. The underground supergroup began to release 7" singles at a drag strip pace on Super Teem and Screaming Apple Records. The sound was and continues to be a bratty mess of classic girl-group wailing. The Runaways comparisons are obvious, but overall, the style and feel of all the Bobbyteens output reaches further back to 1960s groups like the Shangri-La's, albeit drenched in white noise feedback distortion. Like older, wiser, wilder sisters, the Bobbyteens showed fellow Bay-area rockers the Donnas a few tricks and helped the younger version begin their climb to becoming one of the most talked-about female bands in rock & roll. 1998 saw the Bobbyteens' debut platter Fast Livin' & Rock 'N' Roll released by both Lucchesi's Lipstick Records and Seattle garage label Estrus, followed by 2000's Not So Sweet on Screaming Apple/Estrus. Both albums continue to glorify the lifestyle of wild youth even though all the band members are near or older than thirty. Like fellow eternal teenagers the Dictators, this feat is accomplished by keeping the tongue pressed firmly in cheek. The Bobbyteens might make musicians squeamish but there is no better soundtrack for crusin' the mall in the middle of a three-day drunk.

Supercharger

Brought together by a love of rock & roll and a newly purchased drum set Supercharger rocked the early '90s with trashy guitar riffs and a full-throttle misfit punk attack. Based on the cretin hop of the Ramones and the Angry Samoans with a good knowledge of rock & roll's two-minute pop nugget history, Supercharger deconstructed songs till only the essentials of beat and hooks remained. Filling in the gaps with power and volume the music comes across like a cold slap in the face. Teenage mayhem and a general antisocial sentiment cast the band as delinquent savants like those that created the music originally in the 1950s. Calling San Francisco central headquarters, Greg Lowery (bass/vocals), Darin Raeffelli (guitar/vocals), and Karen Singletary (drums/vocals) formed in 1991 and before playing out or … » Read more

THE MUMMIES Runnin' On Empty Volume One 1996

The Mummies are an American garage punk band formed in San Bruno, California, in 1988. Exhibiting a raw and lo-fi sound, dubbed "budget rock", the Mummies' rebellious attitude and distinctive performance costumes exerted an influence on garage punk and garage rock revival acts later in the decade, as well as in the 1990s. Their recorded output was intentionally completed with poor, cheap equipment, including their first and only studio album Never Been Caught, which was released after the group's initial break-up. Since then, the Mummies have engaged in several reunion concerts and tours, including appearances in Europe and the US sporadically through to recent years.
