Edy's Pumpkin Spice Latte

Image
It seems like every year I get SO HYPED about new ice creams flavors and then I wait ... and wait ... and wait for them to hit shelves in the Midwest. It's mid-February for goodness sakes! So, instead of new flavors, I have a fall limited edition, Edy's Pumpkin Spice Latte. This flavor is coffee light ice cream swirled with pumpkin light ice cream. Honestly, I was not excited for this flavor (which is why I didn't pick it up in the fall). Edy's light ice creams have a tendency to be terrible, and this flavor sounded like it had the potential to be very bland. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this flavor. It was a legitimately good ice cream. It was thick, creamy, and smooth which is rare for a light ice cream. The coffee and pumpkin ice creams were very similar in color, but were tightly swirled together so you always got some of both in each bite. The prominent flavor was the spices, particularly the cloves, and the coffee added a nice, milky finis...

Edy's Cake and Cookie Fantasy Frozen Yogurt

Image
I want to jump right in to the description of Edy's Cake and Cookie Fantasy Frozen Yogurt: Red velvet and sugar cookie frozen yogurt swirled together with decadent cookie dough pieces and chocolate cookie crumbles. I mean, just, what is going on here? This sounds like a snack drunk, college Madeline would have concocted. I was pretty skeptical of the red velvet and sugar cookie combo. Red Velvet is a dark, rich, chocolate decadence, and sugar cookies are sweet and light. Together they tasted like those ridiculous delicious/disgusting grocery store frosted sugar cookies with icing attempting to be red velvet-flavored. Obviously, this flavor was over-the-top sugary, but I think it would have worked with a rich ice cream base instead of a yogurt base. Despite the sweetness, the tartness of the yogurt came through but didn't really blend  with the sugar. I kept getting random blasts of tartness through the sugary background. The sugar cookie mix-ins tasted like ...

Edy's Limited Edition Hostess CupCakes

Image
Hooray! It's the first new for 2017 flavor. For a while now I'll be bringing you lots of new for 2017 flavors as my HyVee just stocked the new Haagen-Dazs Trio flavors, which I'm soooo pumped about. I was feeling a bit ambivalent about these new Edy's/Hostess flavors, on the other hand. Hostess desserts are so bad, but so good and you don't really want to admit that you eat them as an adult. But new ice cream is new ice cream so lets see how this goes. This flavor is described as Chocolate cake ice cream, chocolate cake pieces, and a frosting swirl.  Given I had super low expectations for this ice cream, it wasn't too bad. The base had a hint of cake flavor to it, but it mostly tasted like chocolate. A strong, rich chocolate, but not very much cake flavor. The texture of the base, however, was lacking. There was a lot of air and it melted very quickly. It just did not stay frozen at all in my freezer. My freezer could be colder, but at the same time,...

Edy's Limited Edition Sno Balls

Image
Twinkies and Cupcakes and Sno Balls oh my!  I've delved further and further into the world of ice cream, and, for better or for worse, this means I don't eat as many other desserts. I don't think I've had a hostess dessert in years. I loved them as a kid because we didn't often have them in the house. Don't worry, we weren't deprived, we were just more of a Little Debbie Zebra Cakes and Cosmic Brownies family.  Now that Edy's has partnered with Hostess to make Sno Balls, Twinkie, and CupCakes ice cream. Sno Balls is Marshmallow ice cream with chocolate cake pieces and a whipped coconut swirl. If you read my last Edy's review , Peanut Butter Cookie Dough, which I gave essentially 0/4 cones, you'll understand why I was wary of trying another Edy's flavor so quickly, but I was pleasantly surprised. The marshmallow base has a sweeter and more concentrated marshmallow flavor than marshmallow candies, but it tasted very similar to the m...

Edy's Limited Edition Peanut Butter Cookie Dough

Image
I'm absolutely desperate for new 2017 flavors at this point, so desperate that I picked up a container of Edy's Limited Edition Slow Churned Peanut Butter Cookie Dough.  This flavor is an enigma.  It's not listed on the Edy's website, I found a grand total of two images on Google image search, and could find zero reviews.  This is made with Nestle Toll House cookie dough, and it seems like there are at least two other flavors in this limited edition line floating around out there, but I've yet to hear of them or find them. Peanut Butter Cookie Dough is Sweet cream light ice cream with peanut butter cookie dough pieces and peanut butter swirl. I generally stay away from Edy's.  Their products range from terrible to pretty decent, with a just enough products near the 'terrible' end of the spectrum to make me wary of spending money on bad ice cream and then being stuck eating 1.5 quarts of bad ice cream. Unfortunately, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough...

Edy's Pumpkin Patch

Image
Real talk.  It's more than a full week into October and my grocery store still has barely any fall ice creams.  I'm getting worried because winter ice cream season is right around the corner.  Did they just decide to skip fall flavors this year? This week Edy's Pumpkin Patch was literally  the only fall ice cream in the freezers so I decided to give it a try. This is in Edy's Slow Churned line which claims to have 1/2 the fat of other ice creams.  It clocks in at 90 calories and 1.5 grams of fat per serving.  I think the texture of Edy's slow churned ice creams is disgusting, and this was no different.  Corn syrup is listed as the third ingredient, and this definitely had the thick, goopy texture of corn syrup.  It was also somehow squishy, chewy, and slippery all at once.  Weird. In contrast to the off-putting texture, Pumpkin Patch had a great flavor.  Edy's blended pumpkin with clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.  ...

Edy's Slow Churned Maine Blueberries and Cream

Image
I'm at kind of a weird stage in my ice cream life.  I've tried most of the new 2016 flavors available in my area, and have tried enough of the flavors from big brands that I have a hard time figuring out what to buy at the grocery store.  I'll probably need to make more of an effort to go to co-ops and different grocery stores or even order ice cream, but in the meantime I've been dipping into brands only offered in larger containers such as Edy's and Blue Bunny.  (I usually avoid anything larger than a pint because I'm a variety whore and like to try as many types of ice cream as possible rather than committing to a large quantity of a single flavor.) I recently picked up Edy's Slow Churned Maine Blueberries and Cream described as Vanilla light ice cream with wild 100% Maine blueberries. LIGHT ICE CREAM?! *gasp* For light ice cream, this actually had a pretty decent texture. I could definitely tell that the fat content wasn't as high as a pre...

Edy's Rolo

Image
Whooooaaaaaaa dudes! I haven't reviewed an Edy's flavor in a looooooong time.  I heard rumors of a new frozen custard flavor so I went searching for it.  While I didn't find the new custard I was looking for, I couldn't resist taking home a container of Edy's Rolo, a new flavor for the brand.  Rolos are one of my favorite candies.  This ice cream is described as Rich and creamy vanilla ice cream with a caramel swirl and mini Rolo candy pieces. I had forgotten how soft Edy's ice cream is.  Like a fluffy down pillow!  The vanilla base was lightly flavored.  It was also very, very sweet without crossing into cloyingly sweet territory. The caramel swirls were very interesting.  They were also lightly flavored, but the caramel/vanilla combination tasted exactly like one of those cheap (but delicious!) cake cones.  My poor taste buds were so confused. Obviously the mini Rolos were great.  There were plenty of them, I got at lea...

Edy's Snickerdoodle Frozen Custard

Image
Every time I try another Edy's Frozen Custard flavor, they redeem themselves a little bit after the atrocity that was their Chocolate Malt Frozen Custard flavor. It is too bad that was the first flavor I tried from them, because it has made me so hesitant about all the other flavors. I've been slow about reviewing these flavors because of it. I'm currently working through a container of their Snickerdoodle Frozen Custard. All I have left to try is the Mint Cookies and Cream and Old Fashioned Vanilla. Madeline, once upon a time, found a mysterious strawberry flavor, but its not listed on their website. This Snickerdoodle flavor is described as Snickerdoodle cookie pieces and cinnamon graham swirls are mixed into vanilla frozen custard creating an extra thick and creamy version of the classic cookie flavor you love.  I'm going to start off by saying this flavor was great and I'm glad more companies are getting into the cinnamon game. Cinnamon is a bi...

Best of 2015!

Image
Thanks for sticking around and reading about another year of Madeline and Lizzy's ice cream adventures!  Here's a round-up of our favorite ice creams of the year. Best Flavor Madeline: Rhubarb Cinnamon Almond (Sweet Science).  I had absolutely no trouble picking my favorite flavor of the year.  There are three or four vying for second place, but summer seasonal flavor Rhubarb Cinnamon Almond was just so far above and beyond.  It was the perfect mix of tart rhubarb, toasted almond and sweet cinnamon-sugar swirl.  I bought an extra pint, and I'm saving in my freezer until I can't stand winter anymore. Then I'll break open the pint and remember summer. Madeline's Honorable Mentions: Tres Leches Brigadeiro (Haagen-Dazs), Salted Caramel Brownie Ale (Ben and Jerry's), Boom Chocolatta (Ben and Jerry's), Butterscotch Salted Fudge (Sam's Choice) Lizzy: Lemon Cookie (Three Twins). I had a bit more trouble picking my favorite flavor than Madel...

Edy's Snickerdoodle Frozen Custard

Image
I'm well on my way to trying all of Edy's Frozen Custard offerings, which have run the gamut from terrible to pretty tasty.  The latest flavor I have for you is Snickerdoodle, which falls on the pretty tasty end of the spectrum.  Edy's describes this flavor as Snickerdoodle cookie pieces and cinnamon graham swirls are mixed into vanilla frozen custard creating an extra thick and creamy version of the classic cookie flavor. The vanilla base was pretty good.  Nothing to write home about, but good enough not to distract and bring down the other elements of the flavor.  It was very very dense and thick, much more so than normal ice cream.  Edy's did not pull punches when it comes to the texture of their frozen custard. There were so many type of cinnamon flavor going on in this custard!  The cinnamon graham swirl had a milder, sweeter cinnamon-sugar thing going on.  I didn't really taste the 'graham' flavor, but I guess the cinnamon flavor was th...

Edy's Peanut Butter Pie Frozen Custard

Image
After thoroughly enjoying Edy's Salted Caramel Pretzel Frozen Custard, I thought I would give this relatively new line a third shot. So far I have had one bad experience, with the Chocolate Malt flavor, and one good one. This flavor can serve as the tie breaker! I want to start by telling you there is no description of this flavor anywhere on the container. However, on the Edy's website, the description reads A rich and creamy blend of sweet cream frozen custard with plenty of chocolate cookie pieces and peanut butter swirls in every bite . When I first ate this flavor, I assumed the base was vanilla. It is odd that vanilla is considered our default neutral base, when vanilla is a flavored ice cream, as opposed to sweet cream. As I was eating this flavor, there was something different about it compared to what I was expecting it to taste like. Something I couldn't quite put my finger on. When I looked on the Edy's website for the description, and found thi...

Edy's Salted Caramel Pretzel Frozen Custard

Image
So far, I have only had one experience with Edy's relatively new Frozen Custard line and this experience was incredibly negative. However, plenty of ice cream bloggers out there, including Madeline, who disliked the Chocolate Malt custard flavor have enjoyed other offerings from this Edy's line. I felt like this flavor was extra promising because of the salty sweet potentiality and its uniqueness! More ice cream companies should be making flavors with pretzels in them. The description of this flavor on the Edy's website reads A perfect combination of sweet cream frozen custard, chocolaty covered pretzel pieces and a generous swirl of salted caramel.  I'm sure at this point you all know I am so totally over it with salted caramel flavors. And you would probably not expect a flavor from Edy's  of all companies would get me to change my mind on this. Well, I loved this frozen custard. The main reason? The salted caramel wasn't the only salty componen...
