The Central Missouri Ice Cream Experience! (Part 1)

Image
A couple weekends ago I visited my sister, who currently lives and works in Eldon, Missouri, a small town (population 4567 per 2010 census) smack dab in the middle of our lovely state. CHAPTER 1: Arthur goes to the library. I mean ... Madeline and Lizzy and Brett go to Central Dairy The culmination of my trip was a mini trip to Jefferson City, the state capitol, to try  Central Dairy  ice cream.  As far as I can remember, this is the first time I have visited the state capitol and of course the only thing I saw was the inside of an ice cream parlor. (I mean, this is really the only important sight to see in any city anywhere.) I did see the tippy top of the capitol dome up in the distance, though! I wanted to get two flavors because I am constantly paralyzed by indecision, and the fact that it was National Chocolate Ice Cream day definitely played into my decision.  I decided to go with Jamocha Almond Fudge and Muddy River.  Obviously I had to get Muddy R...

Central Dairy Cookies 'n Cream

Image
Guys. I experienced an earth shattering moment while typing up the title to this post. I assumed cookies n cream was "short" for cookies and cream. In most cases, I believe that to be true. However, if you wanted to shorten and with apostrophes, you would have to write " 'n' " because you are taking off the "a" 'n' the "d", right? But, I promise you, I typed the name of this flavor into the title exactly as it appears on the box. Cookies 'n Cream. When I typed it in I was thinking, "gosh Central Dairy is so dumb, they forgot the second apostrophe!" Then I realized, what if they didn't mean cookies and cream but they meant cookies in  cream?! This distinction will become important later in my review. The description of this ice cream is Chunks of Dark Chocolate Cookies in Our Old Fashioned Ice Cream . I adored this ice cream. It was so simple and delicious. The vanilla base was nothing out of t...

Central Dairy: Extreme Chocolate and Bear Claw

Image
Madeline came to visit me in Eldon! How exciting. What is more exciting however, is while she was here we took the trip up to Jefferson City to get some ice cream at Central Dairy. As one would expect, when we arrived the line was out the door of the shop and a ways down the block. Luckily the line moved quickly and we were not kept from our ice cream for long. We made the trip on June 7th, which was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day. Naturally I decided to get two chocolate flavors. The second flavor I order, thus the flavor they put on top, so the first flavor I ate and the first I will review was Extreme Chocolate. I was a little disappointed they did not spell the name of this flavor as Xtreme Chocolate, but you can't have everything. The description of this flavor on the website reads A rich dark chocolate ice cream . Back when I reviewed Jeni's Dark Chocolate flavor, I discussed the use of cocoa powder to make an ice cream a dark chocolate flavor. I didn't lo...

Reader Request: Central Dairy Candy Bar Whirl

Image
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine in Eldon had eaten some of Central Dairy's Candy Bar Whirl and wanted to know what I thought of it. Unfortunately, I had to tell him I had never tried it. I knew I had to fix this at the first opportunity. And similar to my feelings on Blue Bell, I have to eat as much Central Dairy as possible before I move to an area where it isn't sold! Awkward feet are awkward This flavor is described as Thick Caramel and SNICKERS Candy Bar Pieces Mixed into Our Old Fashioned Ice Cream. Okay. Central Dairy does this weird thing where they don't actually describe the flavor of the base of their ice cream. Remember golden ice cream from Tiger Tracks? Like what is that? Again, I have no idea what they mean by Old Fashioned Ice Cream. There wasn't vanilla in the ingredients list and I didn't really taste vanilla. Whatever. Also the Snickers pieces were not all actually Snickers. I got one chunk that I think was an actual Snicke...

Central Dairy: Chocolate Mint Chip

Image
Earlier in January, when my boyfriend, Brett, was visiting me in Eldon, we drove out to Versailles to the amazing Mennonite market, Weaver's. A few thing about this place. First, when you are in Missouri, it's pronounced Versails. Second, I can easily drop like $50 on things that aren't actually food, just impulse buys, at Weaver's. They just have everything you could ever want, like amazing homemade salsa, and homemade jam, and pickled asparagus, and banana peppers, and cappuccino peanut butter, and flavored hot cocoa mixes, and grapefruit gummies, and purple sweet potato chips, and omg yum. When I was there with Brett I bought some tasty looking little Green Mint Chocolate Chips. Then, once I decided to start doing some Sundae Sundays or Sunday Sundaes or whatever you want to call them, I knew I had to do a mint chocolate chip sundae. One of the fun things about doing Sunday Sundae is that is giving me an opportunity to try/review some more basic flavors. I have...

Central Dairy Muddy River

Image
As a very excited new Central Missouri resident, I am obligated to attempt to overload myself on Central Dairy ice cream. Luckily my AmeriCorps job has helped me out. We went to Jefferson City yesterday as part of our orientation and got to stop by Central Dairy before we went home. YAYAYAY! Interesting fact, Central Dairy is owned by Prairie Farms, but according to reviews online, when they bought it out they didn't change the ice cream! Also their slogan is "Fresh as a Missouri Morning." Which I think is adorable. Especially when cows say it: http://www.centraldairy.biz/images/Morning%20TV.wmv As I attempted to peruse the flavors available in the ever crowded Central Dairy I spotted the flavor entitled Muddy River. I was all like er mah gerd I gotta have this! I even convinced one of my to get it to. Of course, I know that the muddy river they are probably referencing is the Missouri River, not the Mississippi a name is a name and the name of this ice cream made i...

Central Dairy Tiger Tracks

Wowowow. Madeline has been BUSY with her ice cream eating. I have been slacking, I know, I know. But I DO have an explanation. Just over a week ago I moved to Eldon, Missouri, where I will be serving in AmeriCorps for the year. Eldon is not too far south of Jefferson City. For those of you that know your Missouri ice cream, you know that Jefferson City is home to the legendary of Central Dairy. Missouri State Track and Cross Country meets are also located in Jeff City, and every time I attend one (though I managed to attend several, but never race in a meet #datalternatelyfe) we got a trip to Central Dairy before driving home to Fenton. I have many a fond memory of Central Dairy, but I honestly don't think I have been since high school, which is frighteningly long ago. One of the things I was most excited about in moving to Eldon was being close to Central Dairy. I was even guessing I would be able to buy it at my local grocery store. And I was! On my first trip to Gerbe's, j...
