Ben and Jerry's Wal-Mart Exclusive: Strawberry Not So Shortcake

Image
I picked up Ben and Jerry's Strawberry Not So Shortcake, a Wal-Mart exclusive flavor, on my recent ice cream purchasing binge.  This flavor is Strawberry Cake Ice Cream with Strawberries & Shortbread Pieces. If you thought there was no room for invention left in the ice cream world, you were wrong.  I've seen cake ice cream, cake batter ice cream, and strawberry ice cream, but I've never seen strawberry cake ice cream.  I recently bought a can of strawberry frosting that I'm pretty sure was from Pilbury, but it was some sort of special edition "Strawberry Something" flavor that I can't find online.  This ice cream tasted exactly like that frosting in all of its fake, palm oil-filled glory.  I don't know that I've ever had strawberry cake, but looking at recipes, it seems most are flavored and colored using strawberry Jell-O, so I imagine the taste is similar.  Either way, it is definitely distinct from normal strawberry ice cream. ...

Edy's Frozen Custard Strawberry Shortcake

Image
The Edy's Frozen Custard line was an exciting concept at first; a mainstream brand doing frozen custard! The execution was kind of ho-hum with some high notes and some low notes.  The Chocolate Malt was flat-out disgusting, the Mint Cookies and Cream was decent, and the Peanut Butter Pie was pretty good.  I've seen the Snickerdoodle flavor around, but it wasn't exciting enough for me to risk wasting money on a bad flavor.  So why did I pick up the Strawberry Shortcake?  Two reasons.  One, I have never heard of this flavor. I saw it at Wal-Mart and was intrigued. It is not listed on Edy's website.  Is it a Wal-Mart exclusive? Where did it come from? Am I living in a parallel universe? Two, Lizzy got me a fancy-schmancy ice cream scooper for my birthday and I wanted something really thick to scoop to test it out. This flavor was good, but didn't taste at all like strawberry shortcake to me. The base had a mild, sweet strawberry flavor.  The main st...

FroYo Delmar Loop

Image
A few weekends ago my friend Bronwyn and I were going to go to the Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop on the Delmar Loop. I was really excited because I wanted to try the Tonight Dough flavor. However, it was super snowy that day and Ben & Jerry's wasn't open. However, FroYo across the street was. So we decided to hit that up, instead. If you've read my reviews of previous frozen yogurt shops, you know I have a whole check list of questions that I try to address in each post. They are as follows: 1) The variety of flavors: is there a good selection? 2) The flavor of my choices. 3) The quality of the combination of my choices. 4) The texture of the froyo (or sorbet, etc.) 5) The variety of the toppings. 6) Quality of the toppings. 7) How well my toppings coordinate with my froyo flavors. 8) Overall experience. Lets get right to it! 1) Variety of flavors. This was definitely good. Plenty of chocolatey flavors, plenty of fruity flavors, some sorbets, an...
